Can't unmount automatically mounted CIFS share

Hi! Got an issue I couldn't figure out

When I use /etc/fstab to automount an SMB share using CIFS, I cannot unmount it without root privileges. If I mount it manually (as a non-privileged user), everything works just fine.

Also, an application I mount the share for (Pika Backup, based on borg) cannot access backups unless I unmount the share with root privileges and then mount it back manually.

A respective line in /etc/fstab is: //address/directory /mnt/backup cifs credentials=...,user,auto,iocharset=utf8 0 2

Highlighted user option to make it clear I didn't forget it.

Any advice?

Weird Secure Boot Issue on Surface Pro 3 (might be related to keyboard cover)

I have a bit of an odd issue with my Surface Pro 3, which is running Debian 12.

Occasionally (perhaps 1 in 15 to 20 boots) it fails to detect the keyboard properly (this is a genuine Microsoft keyboard cover that connects via the pins on the edge of the Surface, not one of the generic bluetooth ones you can get now). When that happens, the onscreen keyboard logo appears in the top right corner whilst the grub boot menu is displayed.

When it then tries to boot Debian, it throws some kind of Secure Boot error and displays this error message:

 undefined

SbatLevel variable initialization failed
Something has gone seriously wrong: SbatLevel UEFI variable setting failed: Invalid Parameter

I then have to force it to power off and then try booting again. Usually it works the next time around.

This one's got me stuck, as I don't know much about the Secure Boot process and I've struggled to find any other references to this error online apart from [this question](https://www.redd

What is this clock icon in my phone status bar?

It only appears occasionally. I have no alarms set, no timers, stopwatch etc. running.

Android phone. Searching got no joy.

Update: it was a scheduled message in signal. Didn't want to send my bestie memes too late at night. It does use the actual alarm icon though, weirdly.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Thumbnail question

Is there a sleek way to upload a new Thumbnail URL when I'm editing a post?

I'm on a desktop. This is what I have to did.

  1. Open a new tab.
  2. Upload the image.
  3. Copy the URL and paste it into the Thumbnail URL of the original post.

If you don't already know... If you stay in original post and upload an image - the image url goes into the URL field and your original URL is gone.

Edit 1

I made a change for clarity.

Edit 2

hellinkilla pointed out something very simple.

I just upload it as part of the post text using the WYSIWYG toolbar.

I somehow convinced myself I had to open a new tab. Don't ask me why.

" Reached target Graphical Interface" after login before getting booted back to the login screen

Hey all, semi-novice Linux user here.

I'm running EndeavourOS with KDE on a Lenovo with an Intel CPU and integrated GPU.

I was attempting to update my system today but kept getting the error referenced in this newsletter that I found after looking for the error online. I ran each command in the newsletter exactly as written and then rebooted my system.

After rebooting, I'm able to successfully get to the login screen and input my username/password but, instead of my desktop, logging in takes me to a command interface for about a second before reverting to the same login screen. The line in the title is the last entry shown in that command interface.

I've looked online for solutions but it doesn't seem like anyone with my same error is getting stuck on the login screen (most people seem to be stuck on Grub and are able to use e, ctrl+alt-F2, etc) and I'm just sorta lost on what to d

Bracket of some sort found in music room

This may or may not be associated with music stands or equipment. I can’t remember.

I just emptied and re-did my music/video room, and found this bracket in a small box with no labels or anything. I can’t remember what it’s for. I think it’s either audio or video related, but it doesn’t seem to match any of my mic or equipment stands, though it might be. It’s devoid of any branding or part/serial numbers. No markings of any kind.

It folds like this:

I'm getting "Error setting installer parameters" while attempting to set up a new VM in Virtual Machine Manager

EDIT: tldr - I was having issues creating a VM using Virtual Machine Manager on Bazzite Linux. Several responders chimed in that it's likely because I'm using the flatpak version of VMM. I probably still could make it work on Bazzite somehow, perhaps w/ the help of distrobox, but instead I've fired up a VM on an old laptop running Linux Mint and everything is smooth sailing. Thanks to all who took some time to help me find a solution.

Original body:

Background: I'm looking to set up a virtual Debian server using Virtual Machine Manager, but I'm stuck on creating my first VM. I'm running Bazzite on my host machine if that makes any difference.

Steps to Reproduce the Issue:

  1. Launch Virtual Machine Manager.
  2. Click File > New Virtual Machine, which opens the "New VM - Step 1" window.
  3. Select "Local install media" and click Forward, which brings me to "New VM - Step 2."

Plasma 6: display brightness changes on its own

solved: not plasmas fault: the monitors own smartcontrast did that.

Hi, please kindly direct me to the right community to ask this:

Plasma 6 is my favorite DE and i use KDE neon. The screen brightness adapts automatically to the windows i focus on, which is a good idea. But it does that the wrong way IMO. Dark windows are dimmed and bright windows are lit up. Why? Now i have both extremes switching back and forth all the time. Can we turn that the other way around or turn it off please?

I like that the screens hardware brightness setting is used now from the desktop. Great! But now i have no control over it anymore, since when i open a bright window, the brightness setting goes up too. I hate that at night.

Usually adjusting the brightness for me has one purpose:

  • bright room: max display brightness (day)
  • dark room: min display brightness (night)

...maybe something in between for transition. All the other features are nice to have but please only work on them when this main fe

Is there a way to actually download a song from spotify (not just spotdl method of finding it on youtube)?

I have a specific song that doesn't seem to be on youtube. I've tried a bunch of spotify download websites plus spotdl, they all claim to find it but then the song isn't the same song (or is instrumental when it should have words).

One of my kids has asked for this for their MP3 player. I'm even happy to pay for it properly, I just can't find it anywhere except spotify. The song is this specific version of Power in Me by The Young Voices Choir: https://open.spotify.com/track/4xkRsdm9qreAvi1JnF8B0A

Any ideas?

Edit: I managed to get the song using https://spotidown.app/, thanks for all the suggestions!

ELI5: How to put several servers on one external IP?

I'm pretty new to selfhosting and homelabs, and I would appreciate a simple-worded explanation here. Details are always welcome!

So, I have a home network with a dynamic external IP address. I already have my Synology NAS exposed to the Internet with DDNS - this was done using the interface, so didn't require much technical knowledge.

Now, I would like to add another server (currently testing with Raspberry Pi) in the same LAN that would also be externally reachable, either through a subdomain (preferable), or through specific ports. How do I go about it?

P.S. Apparently, what I've tried on the router does work, it's just that my NAS was sitting in the DMZ. Now it works!

How to install psql extention (VectorChord) in bitnami/postgresql

Hello,

Im planning on running a postgresql server on my k3s cluster using the bitnami/postgresql helmchart & container image. I already set it up for testing and it works really well.

But since newer versions of immich are moving to VectorChord I would like to install this extention so i can move my immich database to this postgresql server.

I already tried to search how i should/could install an extention in the bitnami/postgresql image but I haven't found something usefull to me. Im not a postgresql expert so maybe i missed some stuff :).

Does someone have experience with this or know in which direction i should like i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for your time and have a wonderfull day!

EDIT: Could someone explain me why im getting downvotes for this post? Is the way i wrote it not good? Is it a bad question? Is the software i mentioned unpopular?

Python question: How to convert list to sort with multiple keys?

I desperately need some Python help. In short, i want to use multiple keys at once for sorting a dictionary. I have a list of keys and don't know how to convert it to the required list.

This is a single key. The self.items is a list of dictionaries, where d[key] is resolved to the actual key name such as "core_name", that the list is then sorted as. This works as expected for single sort, but not for multiple.

 undefined

key = "core_name"
self.items = sorted(self.items, key=lambda d: d[key])
key = "label"
self.items = sorted(self.items, key=lambda d: d[key])

Problem is, sorting it multiple times gives me wrong results. The keys need to be called in one go. I can do that manually like this:

 undefined

self.items = sorted(self.items, key=lambda d: (d["core_name"], d["label"]))

But need it programmatically to assign a list of keys. The following does not work (obviously). I don't know how to convert this into the required form:

 undefined

# Not working!
keys = ["core_name", "label"]

Solution

To verify that a game is from the official GOG store and has not been tampered with, you can follow these steps:

  1. Right-click on the game and click properties
  2. Click on Digital signature

  1. Check if it says GOG Sp. z o.o. (note that the amounts of dots in the name might be different from older and newer releases) If you want the fast and less safe option your done else go t

Docker is renaming a mounted drive

So I recently moved most of my docker storage to a second hard drive, called "storage." After a system restart, docker is creating a folder called "storage," forcing the physical drive to be renamed "storage1." How do I prevent this from happening?

I am using Xubuntu.

Edit: As suggested, it was indeed my system spinning up Docker before mounting the internal disk. The solution (should work on most Unix-like systems) was to manually add a line to /etc/fstab as follows: First get the UUID for the problem drive

 undefined

~$ sudo blkid -s UUID

The output will show your drives and the UUID of each. Then edit the following file:

 undefined

~$ sudo mousepad /etc/fstab #{or use your choice of editor, i.e. nano}

Add the following line:

 undefined

/dev/disk/by-uuid/{UUID number copied from blkid output} /destination/of/your/drive ext4 defaults 0 0

Of course replace {UUID number copied from blkid output} and /destination/of/your/drive and set defaults & parameters as needed. These worked fo

In the History UI, how can I show times in 12 hour format (AM/PM)?

Solution: I found this this bugzilla comment which links to this page for time formatting. I changed intl.date_time.pattern_override.time_short to h:mm a so it shows 4:26PM. There's an open bugzilla report for my issue: Date not formatted according to user's locale (LCTIME).
