How to disable window gaps kwin script on lock screen and login animation window?

I use maximized window gaps, which enforces window gaps on all windows except for exceptions you specify.

  • By default it also applies to the lock screen showing black borders around it.
  • The splash screen moves around after I login. Here’s a screenshot I got with ksplashqml --test`.

I went to Settings app > Windows Rules > Add New > Detect Window Properties, and clicking the window shows ksplashqml for the class name, but that doesn't work when I try adding it as an exception to maximized window gaps, other window class names exceptions work like slurp.

I'm curious, which settings app layout do you prefer?

The image on the right is how the settings app look on macOS 12. On macOS 13 (2022) it was changed to look more to the one on the left, with all the sections selectable in a sidebar and a smaller window. Many users have complained about it, saying that it sacrificed function for form and is part of making macOS more like iOS by mindlessly copying phone UIs onto computers which it isn't meant for. I think its alright, not terrible. And it's the norm with settings apps looking like that in Windows, KDE, Gnome, and some other DEs.

I switched from macos to Linux because it can't stop babying users and being unnecessarily restrictive

I tried running a 2nd instance of Roblox simultaneously on macos 15 with another account but this shows up, if my mac can handle it then why can't it just let me do it? If I have two copies of an app like Roblox in separate User/Applications folders, macos moves them to the /Applications/ folder.

Sometimes it won't run apps claiming to be corrupted, so I then have to do sudo xattr -cr /Applications/someapp.app in the terminal and they run perfectly fine. It always nags me if I download apps from anywhere but mac app store. Some of these messages can only be gotten rid of by disabling system integrity protection, but then macos blocks you from running MAS apps due to having "permissive security".

I don't daily drive macOS anymore, I switched to Linux on my M1 mac where I can do whatever the hell I want.

Window rules for layershell(s)?

I have an issue with hints where I can’t disable the border. In the Kwin Debug Console, the hints window is actually a layer and shows up as KWin::LayerShellV1Window.

Linux equivalents of SketchyVim, for vim modal editing in any text box?

macOS has a bunch of apps which can do so, including SketchyVim. Basically you would have all the vim modes motions and operators, inside any text box in the OS / in any app. I just did some looking up and asked LLMs, but didn't find any linux equivalents of that. Ideally they would work on wayland and have app or window class exceptions.

How to password protect folders and open them in Windows Mac or Linux?

I know I could and should encrypt whole drives but I want another layer of protect specific folders when my devices are unlocked, a password. I want the folders to behave like regular folders where I can add or remove files as usual, without a clunky UX like password protected zips. I looked it up and didn't find any straightforward solutions.

  • I've done lots of searching and Reddit comments about what makes Emacs so appealing. I think Emacs users like the specific ecosystem and things it offers and they put in the work to tailor it for them. Consistently is one thing I hear. Tell me ur thoughts.

I don't find anything appealing about it over Neovim + TUIs and keyboard navigation in GUI apps, including hints: https://github.com/AlfredoSequeida/hints.

  • For instance, I can't download completely youtube pages with videos using wget, but can with pywb (though pywb has issues with sites like reddit).

Not that I would necessarily use it for youtube pages, but that's an example of a complex page with lots of AJAX.

  • except one time when I knocked a cup of water into one in 2005.

This but repeatedly for some people. I only drink from my metal bottles, and turn away from my computer. Admittedly I could be more careful by moving away from the computer but now its been years since it happened.
