  • You cannot be therious!

  • Thanks for the info!

  • I made a test post on Lemmy in Playground, to see if the crossover affects formatting.

    Moderator / ownership levels?

Do all mods have equal power over a community? Or is there a "supermod" / "owner" / "creator" who has more power than the others?

E.g. if I make someone else a mod of a community I created, can they do everything I can? Even remove me as a mod?

  • I think it might also happen when you have italics, or bold, immediately followed by punctuation.

Or is that only when the original post is done on Lemmy and then viewed on PieFed? I'll have to try to find an example.

  • I thought it also happened with italics , but testing now, it seems OK:

  • And there is that text formatting bug! Trying to have bold formatting in two different places ("always" and "all") in the same sentence: PieFed says no! :D

  • Thanks for the info.

    1. I unstickied, re-stickied and waited a couple of minutes. Both are now stickies that appear at the top in Lemmy, no matter what the sorting order.
    2. Sorting order: when I first started with Lemmy, I got sick of seeing the same posts again and again and again. I tried different sorting orders, and different settings for viewed posts, none of which satisfied all my wishes, until I eventually gave up on everything except "New", which is now how I look at all content all the time.

So I guess this means in Piefed I'm always missing out on seeing stickies in all communities, not just the one I mod. :/

    Issues with stickies

In my community [email protected] , I've made two posts sticky (the "Welcome" post and the "Free, legal movies" post) using my Piefed mod account, but:

    • viewing in PieFed, neither post is at the top. (They do have inverted angle brackets around the title.)
    • viewing in Lemmy, The "Free, legal movies" post is sticky (at top, with pushpin icon) but the "Welcome" post isn't.

How do I get them both displayed at the top in both PieFed and Lemmy? Or is this a bug?

  • It's working now. Not perfect but still a good tool (once I worked out I needed to click on "Prices" even for free streaming :) ).

  • Cool, thanks!

  • And, uh, did you take it personal?

  • It's also on legit free streaming site Fawesome

Can't wait to see how much it inspired Kickpuncher...

  • Re Triple B movies, a lot of them seem to be on Tubi and Plex (at least here in Mexico).

    E.g. the first, Malibu Express:

  • Unfortunately, I just keep getting this error (before even trying anything):

An unhandled error has occurred. Reload

  • Just watched Hard Ticket to Hawaii. That. was. AWESOME.

Gotta see more of these Triple B movies.

    :::spoiler Spoilers / riffing

    • Jeez, the guy is even prettier than the girl. Like, way prettier! Like US soap star pretty.
    • 10 seconds have passed, time to show some boobs. Not gratuitous at all!
    • Surprisingly inventive opening titles, given how cheesy it's been so far.
    • "Cameo appearances by"... people I've never heard of. Awesome!
    • Huge psycho snake! I thought this was going to be an action movie, not a monster movie! (I like going into films without a lot of expectation, so I didn't read the description first.)
    • More completely ungratuitous boobage.
    • Apparently there are women who aren't blonde... and don't show their boobs within 10 seconds of first appearing on camera.
    • The theme song! Among the worst the 80s had to offer.
    • "But of course I pilot the plane in hot pants and braless. Double Ds weigh less at 5,000 feet."
    • Noel Coward's a drug smuggler now?
    • Drones in the 80s were so...
    • She keeps a ninja star in her piloting go-go boots!
    • Nothing says 'dedicated captain of the aircraft' and 'conscientious DEA agent' like flying off and leaving your passengers behind at the mercy of armed killers.
    • Can anyone in this movie act? Anyone?
    • "We need to figure out what just happened. Let's unload and hit the jacuzzi." WTF?!?!?! I'll tell you what just happened: you just left two civilians to be killed by armed criminals who just shot at you! And your action plan is to hit the fucking jacuzzi?! (Disbelief assuaged by the knowledge that of course the jacuzzi's going to be an excuse for more boobage.)
    • Restaurant scene, finally some people who can act. Badly, but at least they're in the ballpark.
    • Pretty Boy's kung fu training is getting very bromoerotic. And a touch racist.
    • This message will self-destruct in five seconds! (If by "self-destruct", you mean trying to set a sandwich on fire with a cigarette lighter.)
    • Even the fights are an excuse for more boobage. [Crop tops riding up.]
    • "Now, that snake has been infected by deadly toxins from cancer-infested rats." ROFL ROFL ROFL.
    • Evening at the restaurant: I thought the danger was going to be the big snake, but now I think it's going to be the big hair. The big, big, BIG 80s hair.
    • Still no action to rescue the passengers they left at the mercy of the killers.
    • Relax, Moms for Liberty! That barmaid only looks like a drag queen.
    • Of course, undercover DEA operations are discussed on speakerphone in unsecured locations... with lots of flirting and innuendo.
    • SURPRISE ROMANTIC INTERLUDE! The boobage, however, is not a surprise.
    • Wait... it was night when we cut to the surprise romantic interlude, morning at the start of the interlude and then sunset at the end of the interlude. An entire day just passed? Still no word on the fate of the abandoned passengers.
    • Wait... Pretty Boy isn't just "soap star pretty". I think he really was a soap star, in one of the shows my grandmother used to watch. The Bold and the Beautiful?
    • Handstand skating, just because...
    • Attempted driveby shooting where the assassin hides a shotgun behind an inflatable sex doll while rolling downhill on a skateboard. ROFLROFLROFLROFL.
    • "Let's get that turkey." Hit the assassin with their jeep and before he even hits the ground, blow him up with a rocket launcher!!!!! And the sex doll, too!
    • The abandoned passengers are finally seen again. Alive and well and making dirty Polaroids.
    • Barmaid speaks. Actually, I think it is a drag queen, not just 80s hair and makeup dialled to 11.
    • Was that funny moment... intentionally funny?
    • Honeymooners dead, surprise, surprise.
    • "Dallas Steers" There's only two things from Texas...
    • It's starting to look more and more like it's meant to be funny.
    • Hiding a gunshot wound is not a good enough reason for Kung Fu Bro to put a shirt on. Who cares if he's trying to be undercover!
    • "One man's dream is another man's lunch."
    • Uh oh, I know bad things are gonna happen with that frisbee...
    • Never question if a man can throw!
    • "Hey Co-leen... You've got a great ass.""So do you, pilgrim."
    • Flying guillotine!
    • {battle} "Who got Seth?" Doh!
    • TOILET SNAKE! "Just when you thought it was safe to take a pee."
    • Who doesn't bring dates to an arrest? In a prom limo?
    • Pretty Boy has barrel envy!
    • Closing titles. A Jackie Chan movie will reshow every stunt. This movie reshows every boob.

Looking over past posts here, I've collated a few free streaming links from:

    • licensed (or licence-claiming) channels & uploaders on user-upload platforms like YouTube and the Internet Archive

As this community will disappear on 1st July 2025 with the closure of its host instance (lemm.ee), I've created a new community.

It's for all kinds of action movies, including martial arts movies.

(If eventually there is enough momentum for a distinct martial arts movie community, that can be created, too.)

Feel free to come post and comment there about martial arts movies all you want!

How to federate a new community?

I created a new community on PieFed ( [email protected] ) and tried using https://lemmy-federate.com/ to get federated across other instances, but get an "instance is not registered" error.

    Apparently, there are... issues?
    https://lemmy.ca/post/45479147

So wondering about other ways to get federated.

    1. Can I do it myself, at least for the one other instance where I have an account (lemmy.ca)?
To me, at the moment it seems a bit 'chicken and egg'. I can't see it on lemmy.ca, so I can't subscribe to it from lemmy.ca. And lemmy.ca won't federate it until I subscribe to it. I must have it wrong.
    2. Promo communities: I know about those, but I don't want to use them just yet. This is a "soft launch" until I get more familiar with having a community and get some more content into it.
    3. Other ways?

    Thanks.

    Inspiration for Kickpuncher?

I think I might have found one possible source of inspiration for the Kickpuncher franchise: Future Kick (1991), starring Don "The Dragon" Wilson.

The Community wiki page on Kickpuncher says CyberTracker (a different Don Wilson movie which I haven't seen yet).

Previously, I always assumed the inspiration was Albert Pyun movies like Cyborg and Nemesis.

    What do you folks think?

    Spoiler formatting? Code formatting?

Testing and wondering about spoiler formatting and code formatting in posting and commenting on PieFed.

All of the below was written based on trying things out and seeing what it looks like in the Preview window . But experience has shown me that the Preview window isn't always the same as the final result, e.g. the block quote function does not display in the Preview window but does work in the final result.

So please excuse me if any of points 1-6 do not jibe with the final results shown after I click the "Publish" button.

    1. Spoiler 1

Ah, so I can do a spoiler on PieFed. (I've gone back to Lemmy when I wanted to do some posts that needed spoiler protection.) Just not with a GUI button, but by inserting the relevant Markdown codes manually at the start and at the end of what you want to hide.

China’s AI industry has drawn increasing media attention as its progress generates excitement and trepidation about a global future fueled by Chinese AI. One dimension of this success is the ability of Chinese actors, such as DeepSeek, to circumvent U.S. restrictions on the export of critical technology. According to Reuters, a U.S. official claimed this week that DeepSeek had evaded export controls to gain access to American AI chips. Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Chinese engineers transported hard drives with hundreds of gigabytes of AI training data in suitcases to Malaysia in order to bypass U.S. restrictions by using American chips outside of China. But the flipside to this story is how U.S. export controls have encouraged the flourishing of China’s domestic AI ecosystem.

How to "get posts into Piefed"?

Not sure of the right words for what I mean. I'm still new to the Fediverse and even newer to PieFed.

I'm now 99% of the time in PieFed (my instance: piefed.social ) as opposed to Lemmy. Often I'll visit a community and see zero or almost zero posts. But if I open the same community in Lemmy (my instance: lemmy.ca) there are loads of posts.

An example I just noticed: [email protected]

    • Piefed.social: 2 posts.
    • Lemmy.ca: 141 posts.
    1. Is there a way to get those missing posts into Piefed?
    2. All of them at once (not just one at a time)?
    3. Can an ordinary user like me do it?

    Thanks.

    New notification style issues

The notification page layout has changed and there are some issues for me.

    Possible factors on my end:

    • Browser: Zen Browser 1.13.2b, mod of Firefox 139.0.4.
    • Piefed settings: increased font size, but the Settings page doesn't show me the current size setting so I can't say what it is.

The previous "All" notification screen was clear, compact, had the same height for each notification and only took one click to open anything.

Now the notification heights are variable, some truly huge (as it includes the whole comment being replied to, even the markdown for the URLs of images), replies to comments require an additional click to access, and the "Reply details" line overlaps the notification title. (At least for me, not sure if it's like that for everyone.) EDIT: Also, the nice, immediate indicator of a red dot for an unread notification is now hidden for replies to comments, until clicking "Reply details". ANOTHER EDIT: I just spent a minute hunting down one rema

How the Grateful Dead built the internet (history of "the Well")

In the 1980s, years before the World Wide Web, a virtual online community emerged called the Well (the Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link). Centred on the San Francisco Bay Area of California, the Well not only thrived in its own right, but proved to be one of the most influential factors in the birth of the internet as we know it today. And its long life was in large part thanks to fans of the Grateful Dead.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Jaws, Steven Spielberg's blockbuster horror movie based on the bestselling novel by Peter Benchley. We're marking the occasion with a tribute to this classic film and its enduring impact on the popular perception of sharks, shark conservation efforts, and our culture at large.

    (Many spoilers below.)

Jaws tells the story of Chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), the new police chief for Amity Island, a New England beach town and prime summer tourist attraction. But that thriving industry is threatened by a series of shark attacks, although the local mayor, Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), initially dismisses the possibility, ridiculing the findings of visiting marine biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss). The attacks keep escalating and the body count grows, until the town hires a grizzled shark hunter named Quint (Robert Shaw) to hunt down and kill the great white shark, with the help of Br
