  • Yeah. It's becoming clear and obvious that no side in any controversial situation has any morals or virtues.

    Essentially, it all boils down to just looking good in front of your peers. If someone goes against the crowd but isn't breaking any rules, the crowd will legit batter and berate the people in charge until that person is punished for something.

  • You're free to think that, but I respectfully disagree.

    If he kept doing it, sure. But taking him aside and talking to him could be more effective and less damaging than getting the authorities involved and humiliating him to "prove a point."

    Show him that we're on the same side. If we treat him like an enemy when he really isn't one, he very well may become one.

    Infinite scrolling was always a stupid idea

    What happened to pagination? I have to scroll deep to find anything new, and I lose my place every time I come back. Now instead of clicking (or tapping) once to go to the page I need, I have to scroll over a dozen times each time to get back to where I was.

    It's fucking stupid and only serves to take further advantage of the "instant gratification" crowd. i.e. the useful idiots wasting away on twitter.

    It's part of their conditioning to only focus on the "new" and the "now", never what came before. That way they can constantly "consume" their entire lives and never look back and appreciate what they've always had.

    It's very effective. The design damage that twitter has done to the internet is going to take generations to overcome.

    I'm glad Lemmy didn't follow through with (all) the bad design decisions that went into reddit. The forced double-spacing is incredibly stupid, but at least clicking the title of a thread opens the thread instead of the link.

  • I've noticed brave users are some of the biggest useful idiots on the internet.

    I genuinely think there are 2 classes of brave users: people who are invested in the company trying to viral market it, and the morons who fall for it.

  • What's sad is a significant amount of people have simply been conditioned to accept that level of noise in their lives.

    If things are quieter and they aren't getting products shoved in their faces 24/7, they become visibly uncomfortable.

    Which is faster?

     undefined

    let mut variable: Type;
    loop {
        variable = value;
    }

    or

     undefined

    loop {
        let variable: Type = value;
    }

    Can anyone tell me what song this sounds similar to?

    This came up in a playlist that was randomly playing. It sounds like a really popular song that I've heard before, but I'll never think of the name on my own.

    Can anyone help me out?

    What are some good training spots for the Elite Four in Pokemon Emerald?

    I'm at the Elite Four, but my team is horribly underleveled. I don't know how I was allowed to get this far with a team that's so underprepared, but here I am.

    Right now, all I can see is literally grinding wild Pokemon in Victory Road. Is there a better way?

    Finally found a Linux bluetooth gaming controller for only $17!

    Hopefully no issues crop up, but I'll let you know if they do!

    Unpopular opinion, but I like writing Rust code in camelCase.

    I came from Java, so it kind of makes sense.

    I'm glad the Rust devs thought to allow disabling non-snake_case warnings.

    This language is actually really great and versatile. (I also use tabs instead of spaces)

    Does this game still sell expansions after the initial purchase?

    I'm interested in playing, but I don't want to get locked into having to buy expansions to keep up with the playerbase. Is this game just buy once and have access to all the content forever, or will I have to buy an expansion at some point if I want to play with everyone else?

    Can anyone recommend generic controllers that work with Linux?

    I don't need anything special or pricey, just a basic controller that does basic controller things.

    I've tried a few generic controllers, but they have issues with bluetooth, battery life, and automatically shutting off too early from idling.

    Does anyone know of any generic controllers that don't have these issues? I don't mind if the battery life isn't the same or better than official controllers, but they shouldn't straight up lie about the capacity. It should be illegal.

    Update: I ended up going with a generic PS4 controller from Walmart. The brand is Yuoy, which I am unfamiliar with but I'm willing to see for myself how good their controller is.

    This is the one I got https://www.walmart.com/ip/seort/5486552170 and so far I am satisfied. It's a bit heavier than the other generic controllers I have, which I hope is a sign of a bigger battery. The d-pad isn't quite as good as the legendary Sony d-pads, but I'm getting used to it. It's not nearly as bad as the 360 or logitech d-pa

    Why are mods censoring threads about free VPNs?

    riseup.net Home - riseup.net

    Riseup provides online communication tools for people and groups working on liberatory social change. We are a project to create democratic alternatives and practice self-determination by controlling our own secure means of communications.

    Home - riseup.net

    I've had one thread locked and another removed for daring to suggest a free VPN.

    What rules was I breaking? It looks like the mods are just censoring me without breaking any rules because they know they can get away with it.

    Edit for when this post is censored:

    There are proud consumers making up bullshit that "riseup doesn't want people using their VPN unless they donate, and they don't want people using it for torrenting."

    That's complete malarkey pulled straight from their rectum. Here's a quote from the website that none of them read before spouting their nonsense: "This is an experiment to see if we can create a VPN service that is easy enough for everyone to use and that people will donate enough to sustain."

    You guys are literally making up bullshit to justify why you're wasting money, then getting mad at and censoring anyone who tells you that you can be getting something for free.

    It's an expected response, even among piracy communities unfortunately.

    Has anyone tried Riseup VPN?

    I've been experimenting with some free VPNs, and it looks like Riseup is legit. I'm able to torrent on it without issue and the speeds are acceptable for my connection.

    How come we don't recommend this more? Everyone is always saying "no free vpns," but how many of you have actually tried them? I feel like I've been wasting money on my VPN ever since I found Riseup.

    Is there any drag and drop method to develop a GUI with Rust?

    I've used Godot, which works great but I'm wondering if there are other ways.

    Does anyone have experience using Qt with Rust and Qt Designer?

    Are there any other drag and drop options that you think are viable?

    Currently there is a war on settings among software businesses.

    They have the "apple" mindset, but only half-assed. Instead of making the best decisions and refusing people the option to change, they make whatever decision is easiest to implement and don't give users the option to change.

    It's a trend in just about any massively profitable software. Useful settings are either extremely hard to find, such as with web browsers, or they don't exist at all.

    They do this so they have less to maintain. As usual, "tell people what they want" instead of giving them what they want.
