  • Open Comb Micromtic Open Comb? Is that the sleep deprivation talking?

No, its the official nomenclature recommended by the Department of Redundancy Department

  • I’m quite tired

At least for your first 50 shaves, you should not use a straight razor when tired. I can feel quite clearly that my fine motor skills decline with the hour of the day, and I made a rule not to shave with a straight anymore after 22:00.

  • Tridi 3 Floréal an 233 de la Révolution, jour de Fougère

Today happens to be the day of Fougère, but I unfortunately missed this. So, Tabac Tuesday + Koorat not Moarteen.

    Have a good evening!

  • I probably should load less

    Never

    Big soap has taken over

  • Congratulations! It's not exactly an editor plugin, but it's a start 🤣🤣🤣

@[email protected] – where's your project for computer-assisted SOTD creation?

  • Duodi 2 Floréal an 233 de la Révolution, jour de Chêne

I'm getting sloppy posting... but here I am finally. I get the anise more and more in Absinthe, and I probably should load less. But it is always extremely slick, and a delight to shave with.

    Have a good evening!

  • Wednesday, April 16, 2025: BVWSC

    • Brush: Yaqi 24mm Synthetic Panda
    • Razor: King C. Gillette DE Razor
    • Blade: Astra Superior Platinum (34)
    • Lather: Areffa Phantom of Kiyv Kyiv
    • Postshave: Williams Aqua Velva
    • Postshave: Nivea After Shave Balm

BVWSC time, this time with Areffa's Phantom of Kiyv Kyiv, brought to us by @[email protected]. Unfortunately, April is the cruelest month (with June) for my allergies and hayfever, so I am not really able to give an informed opinion about the scent. But the base was easy to lather, and very creamy – even though it was not bear, but rather beef based (I share the very slight disappointment with @[email protected] 🤣).

Thanks again to @[email protected] for another excellent discovery!

    [BVWSC Reminder]

This Wednesday is the day, so start blooming your smush!

I was wondering about the immediate sequel: Our Mayday shave is set, and I guess in June, there will be the Lather Games. Is this correct, and do we go on hiatus, just as we did last year for August?

  • For knives, this is pretty good advice

  • Ask not whether you will live long enough to use all that aftershave; ask how much you can use in one go without dying or suffering an insta-divorce

    J.F. Kennedy (allegedly)

  • I got 300ml of Tabac Aftershave today. Finally I will be able to enjoy the full aroma of the wirtschaftswunder

    👃👃👃

  • I got my smush as well!

    Bummer for the GEM!

  • LPL has one of the best scents around, agreed. I have never been disappointed.

  • Primidi 21 Germinal an 233 de la Révolution, jour de Gainier

Forgot to post this yesterday. The soap is good, but I can't really identify individual notes. I should put my Puma back on the stones. The aftershave (which contains horse milk) is surprisingly alcoholic, and had a good sting to it.

@[email protected], the soap is on the way, with triplicate customs declaration!

Inquiry on the state of the March shave

As of today, I still have not received the smush from @[email protected], and this Wednesday is the last one in March. So, what do we do?

Option 1: We drop the club shave for March, and if we still receive the smushes, maybe convene twice in April.

Option 2: We shave with a soap we all have. We discussed this issue briefly on Free Talk Friday, and the only soap that has a chance to be the common denominator is Tabac. However, I don't know whether everybody here has it, and whether you would be interested in shaving with it in the first place.

    Opinions?

    A Look Back on 2024

Thanks to the newly acquired logging capacity of sotd.el (the oldest SOTD plugin for any reasonableTM editor I am aware of), I've been logging every shave this year, and I thought: why not inflict the data on you?

I shaved 231 times in 2024 (roughly every 1.5 days). The move from reddit to lemmy coincides with a switch to straights – straight razors dominated my routine in 2024 (64.5%), though I still used my DE razors (22.5%) [though mostly when not at home], and occasionally I used GEM (9.5%) or AC (3.5%). If this continues, I will never again have to buy new blades. My brush collection splits between horse (45%), boar (32%), and synthetic (22.9%).

Let's go into the details, shall we?

    Razors

    Razor Frequency
    Thiers-Issard 188 7/8 'Coq et Renard' - Straight 40
Parker Straight Razor - Straight 29

    Voting discussion

Now that everybody has digested somewhat their voting trauma, it is time to reopen the wounds. 😱

The voting procedure for the BVWSC consisted up to now in me simply winging it, but last month, I didn't wing it correctly, and dukkha ensued. First, I got trigger happy and announced a winner when some important members (ahem @[email protected] ahem) had not yet voted. In order to prevent this from ever happening again, what I would like to propose is that we formalize a bit more the process, in the sense that there should be some fixed amount of time (48 hours?) for each of the soap nomination thread and the voting thread, and that a winner can be announced only after this time.

Second, there is potentially an issue with the voting procedure and count. What I have done so far is to allot a number of points which is inverse to the rank you proposed. That is, assuming three proposed s

Fifth Buena Vista Wetshaving Social Club Soap Nomination Thread

December is the busiest month for postal services, so it's time to prep. Please nominate here your soaps that you wish to be used on December 18 for the 5th installment of the BVWSC! For the newcomers: If your nominated soap wins the election, you have the honor and priviledge to send out smushes to the other shavers here.

    Reminder:

    • July: AYLM Don José
    • September: MacDuff's Old Strathcona
    • October: LPL Narcisse
    • November: Stirling Oro Valley

    Request for aftershave recommendations

Since I had to throw away my trusty Floid The Genuine , I live in dissatisfaction: I don't have anymore an aftershave that fits basically any soap, smells good and plays nice with my skin.

Do you have any recommendations for one-size-fits-it-all aftershaves?

Fourth Buena Vista Wetshaving Social Club Prep

It's time to prep for November's BVWSC!

In October, Narcisse eaked out a very narrow win against Stirlings Oro Valley.

@[email protected] – who proposed Oro Valley – would be open to repropose it for November.

Therefore the question: Can we forgo the normal voting procedure, and use Oro Valley by acclamation?

    Aye or Nay?

If the Nays win, I will open a soap proposal thread, as usual.
