I got fed up with how much effort I need to put into getting good lather from veg Tabac with badger and boar brushes (load with a super dry brush for way too long, and then add water in microscopic amounts repeatedly forever or see the lalther turn into a bubbly mess. I was missing tallow Tabac and simultaneously wondering whether I was remembering it with rose-coloured glasses.
So in fetched a backup of pre-2022 Tabac, and went to work with my trusty Gelousy. The difference is stark. The tallow base loads more easily, and is super forgiving when adding water. It just stays dense and takes water like a champ.
I had a great shave with the good old Tabac slickness, and I don't see myself going back to veg Tabac anytime soon, at least not without a synth.
This makes me wonder: what is it that make some soaps (particularly more bubbly European vegan bases) so much easier to use with a synth than a badger or boar? Or is it just user error and I'm alone with my negative experience?

I'm back home from a long Easter weekend in my hometown, which means I have access to the Moarteen again, and I can do a late Mammoth Monday shave with the wonderful Shire-Valedictorian combo.

I really like that grizzly bay handle

Enjoyable! My 4th ever straight razor shave, and I'm already getting more comfortable.
That's quick!

Looking great!

Joining u/EldrormR, u/VisceralWatch, and u/Semaj3000 for a tiny brush streamlined Hygge shave today.
The Streamline is really a lovely and smooth GEM, and it gave me a great shave. But enjoyable as this is, I'm looking forward to getting back home tomorrow and using the Moarteen again.
Today was Djunior's first real Easter egg hunt and he loved it. Now he has a chocolate stash that should last him months.
Have a lovely Easter evening if you celebrate.

A shave in my childhood bathroom. We're visiting my family for Easter break, so no Moarteen for me for the next few days.
Hygge + Marlborough is a nice combo.

I'm super curious to hear how it goes!

- Lather: Stirling Soap Co – Varen
- Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co – Varen

Varen is one of those scents that make a lot of sense trickholing since it overpowers most other scents rather than playing nice. Possibly something like BaM Fougère Classique or Fern could hold its own, though, so I might try that for tomorrow's Fougère Friday.
Using Varen with the sub-exclusive brush and razor felt like a preview to upcoming green-in-green SOTDs when our own exclusive Stirling soap lands, and it has the added benefit of being on theme.

Yes, those didn't get polished off. I think I should just post a short video, that might give a better idea of the colours.

Yes gcgallant and I own it, and Ulrik returned it to me. We might have future sub exclusives where it could come in handy 😊

Hyyyyyype!

Mailcall! Moarteen!

So, my Moarteen has been marked as delivered at 10:34 today, which means that mine was probably the quickest to reach its destination. I was surprised by how nervous I was about it. What I convinced y'all to buy a piece of shit? So here's a quick post about unboxing, first impressions, a few detail and comparison shots, and a first shave with that thing.
So first things first: It's really sparkly 🎇

That thick red slab you see in the picture is the stamp that created the little Lathersnoo logo on the tang (@[email protected] and I had it made for this and it was returned to me so that it can be reused for future sub exclusives. If you have a project in mind that could benefit from it, let me know) and you won't get that, but otherwise, that parcel, box and razor is what you c

Operation Moarteen – Prepare for Hype!

As is tradition, this is not a drill! We have collected 47 of the 48 payments over the weekend, communicated all the last minute address changes and recipient changes to Ulrik, and paid a ridiculous amount of money for group-themed shave implements. The last phase of Operation Moarteen is thus initiated.
Project Moarteen Organising Committee (PMOC/OCPM), take a breath. What are you talking about?
We're done, the razors are paid, Ulrik has our money, he'll ship the razors.
But PMOC, you said that only 47 of the 48 payments have been made‽
Yes, there is one straggler we can't reach, and we've been impatient. That person's razor will be held back by Ulrik until further notice. We hope that this will give the missing person enough time to figure out what they're about to miss and pay up. We think that giving two weeks, until Mon, Apr 21, 23:59:59 GMT, should be a fair amount of time. If we don't get payment until then, we'll offer the razor to the people on the wait list for p

Operation Moarteen – It's go time!

This is not a drill! Our Moarteens are assembled and the only step left is sharpening. We need to provide Ulrik with everyone's shipping addresses, so that he can invoice us, and we can invoice you.
Project Moarteen Organising Committee (PMOC/OCPM), why are you telling us this, don't you have our addresses?
Yes, we do, but the original sign up thread closed 6 months ago, so some shipping addresses might have changed.
Good point! How do you suggest we proceed, PMOC?
If you have moved in the last 6 month, send your updated shipping address to [email protected]. Use the email address you've registered at sign up so we know that you're not a scammer stealing someone's identity. If you have lost access to that email address, or have any doubts or questions contact either @[email protected] or [@[email protected]

Mailcall

A nice little mailcall arrived.

I had tried Tobacconist a while back in soap form and loved it, and I've finally pulled the trigger on the frag. Such a nice rich tobacco scent!
I've first tried Macduff's base thanks to @[email protected]'s BVWSC submission a few month back and I was really impressed with the soap base. The scent is a blind buy, but the scent notes tobacco, lemon zest, spiced plum, roasted coffee, vetiver, cedar were intriguing me and I really like the scent off the tub. I'm looking forward to exploring it after AS2EB.
Finally, the comically large tin of LPL is my first tub from this artisan after having tried it also thanks to BVWSC, this time from @[email protected].

Successful Half-Blind Mail Call

A very long awaited mail call from Black Friday finally made it to me and I was a bit worried about two of the blind buys in it. Fortunately I got lucky across the board.

The goods, from the safe buys to the risky ones:
- A bottle of SBS Valedictorian EdP. This has been one of my favourite outdoorsy scents for a few years now, but I've never had the frag so far.
- A bottle of uncool Shire splash. I love the scent of Shire, but the cooling agent in the previous splash always felt jarring to me. So far, all know stuff for me.
- A set of CF Gemütlichkeit soap and splash. I love warm wintry gourmands, so I was pretty sure I'd like this one and it's delightful off the tub. I'm looking forward to trying it soon.
- A trickhole set of CB Blugère. It felt a bit stupid to blind buy an entire trickhole set, but shipping and reshipp

Mailcall

Nice little mail call. These three waterstones expand me options. I only had 3k and 10k waterstones so far and i was curious about how a little more range and resolution would feel.

Also, this dull-like-a-butter-knife Thiers Issard frameback. It's my first frameback, and it was a bitch to hone (I did that two days ago). It just would not pass the packing peanut test off the stone. A real mystery to me. In my limited experience, I always manage to get the edge sharp on the stone without stropping, if I used a light enough touch and alternate the sides frequently, ending on leading edge strokes. But not with this guy. It wouldn't even shave arm hair without stropping.
In my mental model, this means that the steel is ductile and forms a burr, but I'll gladly be corrected by any Honemeister who actually knows what they're doing😅
Either way,
