How would you feel about a regularly scheduled discussion thread in this community, for medical professionals to chat about how things are going?
A number of communities use scheduled threads to help get discussion started, and I thought this community could benefit from something like that. It reduces the pressure on individual users to be the first one to post a discussion post, since this community is mostly news/research articles.
It could be to chat about how things are going professionally, to share stories from that week, to discuss a piece of news/research in depth, etc.
If this sounds good to you, how often should the threads be scheduled? Any other considerations?

Ending soon - Soulslike(-adjacent) Giveaway!
Hey guys! As a little thank you to the community and in light of the current ongoing Steam Summer Sale, I would like to give a little back to the community: I'm giving away a number of soulslikes and soulslike-adjacent titles. I'm not made of money, so sadly, I can't give away the "best" titles there are (Edit: They're getting better by the hour now 😂), but there should be something interesting in the mix here. :D
I'm giving away copies of:

Emissions from Google’s data centers decreased, however.
A Google data center in Mayes County, Oklahoma.
Google’s carbon emissions jumped yet again as the company continues to push ahead in AI. The company’s 2025 sustainability report emphasizes that its “ambition-based emissions” grew 11 percent last year to reach 11.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide pollution, marking a 51 percent increase compared to 2019.
That puts Google farther away from its goal of slashing planet-heating pollution in half by 2030 compared to a 2019 baseline. But what it calls “ambition-based” emissions excludes certain categories of supply chain pollution it considers out of its control or“peripheral” to the core business of Alphabet, Google’s par

A lot of the future of AI will be settled in court. From publishers to authors to artists to Hollywood conglomerates, the creative industry is picking a big copyright fight over the vast quantities of data used to train AI models - and the ultimate output of those models. (Disclosure: Vox Media, The Verge's parent company, has a technology and content deal with OpenAI.) This week, we got rulings in two early cases, involving groups of authors suing Anthropic and Meta. In both cases, the tech companies won. Sort of.

Any chance of consolidating this community with [email protected]?
Hello,
It’s more of a meta discussion, but any chance you could reach out to the [email protected] mod? They just posted a half 2025 thread with quite a few comments: https://lemmy.ml/post/31205768
I know you’re banned on .ml, but you could maybe ping them here, or create a thread on [email protected]

The Fediverse's collaborative pixel art event is coming back. Last year we successfully put down this championship belt, designed by me.
If people are interested in participating again this year I'm willing to design something else. Of course, if someone else wants to design something I'm down for that too.
Last year I just put together the belt as a suggestion and we went with it. This year I figured we could get some more community input on what the design should be. Another belt? A wrestling ring? Should we go all in on a Mr. Iguana mural? The world sucks, lets detract ourselves with some pixel art.
Transvitae likely plagiarizes Erin Reed's articles using AI. Can we ban links to that site?
Y'all, I'm pretty sure this website "Transvitae" is literally just running my articles through AI and having them rewrite it... Seriously, look at my latest NYT article and then theirs that came out shortly after.

📨 Delivery Services 📨
Plant/seed transportation services can be very useful for avoiding long delays or theft by customs or incompetence at the post office, especially when sending internationally. For places without a postal service, such private services are essential. (As an example, Jim West, the world-renowned fruit collector, uses the services of a Colombian woman living in Ecuador in order to get seeds in and out of Ecuador using the Colombian postal service.)
Related services, such as obtaining seeds from reliable sources (e.g. botanical gardens) and sending them with phytosanitary certification, also belong here.
If you offer such services, you can post about yourself here and provide some evidence that you are legitimate, such as a scan/photo of an invoice with your client's personal information redacted.
Please do not post reviews directly in this thread. Use the Review Thread for that.

Could we please put NSFW tags on Transition timelines?
I recently had to realise that seeing the pictures of transition timelines of others is like literally an instant trigger for my Dysphoria. That's why I would really like if could put an NSFW Tag on The pictures, so that I or others dont have to see them if we dont want to. I would really appreciate that. :)
Midjourney is facing a lawsuit from Disney and Universal.
Midjourney has released the first version of its video generation model to the public. For now, the tool can generate short videos based on images uploaded or created on the platform, but Midjourney plans on rolling out more capabilities in the future.
After creating an image using Midjourney, the service will show a new “animate” button that users can press to create a 5-second clip based on a text prompt. It will also show the option to add an image you uploaded to the platform as a “starting frame” for a video. The tool will generate a generic prompt that “just makes things move” by default, but a “manual” button lets users describe how they want the motion to look.

Please keep Jen (the mod here) and her family in your thoughts
A bit of sad news to report.
What many of you may not know is that the mod here, Jenny, is one of my oldest IRL friends. Earlier today I got a call from her husband letting me know that when he came home from work Saturday, he found her unresponsive. She has been in the ICU since then. She was awake and talking yesterday morning but is now in a medically induced coma (mostly due to secondary complications).
I'm intentionally skipping over the specifics, but suffice it to say she's got a fight ahead of her. Things were too hectic this evening to visit, but I'm hoping to go see her tomorrow or as soon as the situation stabilizes enough to allow for non-family visitors.
So please keep her and her family in your thoughts.
Thanks,
Patrick

Should we allow/ban video/audio/image news?
With the recent posting of some more varied mediums of news media, it seems to be drawing some reports. There's no rule against it, and so far I don't see it as an issue personally (except for images, I feel they are harder to verify legitimacy) but I'm not the only user here.
How would you all as a community like to rule on this?
