  • Me too. I hate having lots of tabs. Makes it so much harder to find the tab I want.

  • I have ~/.local/bin added to my PATH for things i want in my PATH, and ~/scripts for things I don't want in my PATH. Both managed by chezmoi. I'm surprised if there's anyone who wants most of their bash scripts in PATH. I only have like 5 scripts in ~/.local/bin; the others get executed on an automated basis (eg on startup or by a cronjob), or so infrequently that I don't want them in my PATH.

  • In this case it's because part of the joke is the quote tweet. You could also link to the tweet instead of a screenshot but then we need to connect to Musk's servers at some point (even if through a proxy like nitter)

  • Not just screenshots. Generally look at the permissions apps have; screenshots is one of them, but all sorts of other data can be sent off by any app with internet access.

  • Yeah it depends. For "What's the best laptop for Linux", literally just look it up; there's hundreds of articles, forum threads, Lemmy/Reddit posts, etc discussing this topic. But I don't think there's an issue asking for hardware recs if you are explaining a specific use-case. I would say still do an online search first—like some use-cases are quite general, e.g. for music production, for gaming, and so on. And even for the most general cases, I think if your thread is more something like "does anyone else disagree that ThinkPads are good for Linux?" that's also fine, because it's actually sharing your opinion and giving something more to go off of than "give me a laptop".

  • I would personally get a second hand cheap laptop off ebay or a local 2nd hand electronics store, and then just install the distro of your choice on it. Can't really think of an instance where a computer would come with an OS and I'd just use it as-is rather than installing my own, but I guess if you want a fairly generic eg Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Mint, etc setup then it could work. But definitely don't limit yourself to preinstalled laptops, since installing an OS only takes an afternoon if you pick an OS with a more fine-grained install like Arch or Gentoo, and about the same time as installing user software for distros that have more streamlined installs.

  • Both this and the OP link don't work

  • I prefer fdisk. Idk, the sort of linear nature and simplicity appeals to me. As opposed to a tui with more going on.

  • One point three two, or one three two if it's obvious from context where the decimal point is. That's how you're meant to pronounce digits after the decimal point in general.

  • My main reason is one you listed. My setup works well for me; I enjoy it; and I don't feel the need to fix what ain't broke (when the "fix" likely involves breaking a lot of things I need to fix, and generally a lot of time and effort). Plus, from what I can tell, if you are particular about parts of your system, the immutable distros on offer are not diverse enough to cater to you—eg can I use my preferred init system, runit? All the immutable distros I know are systemd (which I am not a big hater of, but I like and am accustomed to runit already).

Edit: saw what you said at the end about what it would take for me to switch. It would be if I had a real use case for it, eg I regularly had problems that an immutable distro would solve, or I could see a way that an immutable distro would drastically improve my workflow.

  • Although it's pretty easy to stumble upon some guide that you don't understand that gets you to enable dev mode. Not saying it happens a lot, but there's not a very high bar for the test for enabling dev mode.

  • Bucket of cold water, stick your feet into it.

Tin foil in the windows to reflect radiation.

Cold tap over inside of forearms and wrists (iirc ears work well too, but of course a more awkward reach if you're just using a bathroom tap).

  • Why have you (or whoever you got the image from) rewritten what the Windows screenshot says but in red?

  • Maybe if you didn't make jokes like this and actually treated women like people, you will "get the permission".

  • How is it not transformative and intentional to reinterpret neurological signals as music?

  • I mean it also means I inherently have an off-site backup, which is important given that my home occasionally gets raided by the police. I'm not worried about data access since I use FDE on everything, but data loss is a real concern.

  • I don't have advice but that does just sound like being 13. It's a rough time. If you can see, or if she asks for, something actionable that would help (like "my homework is really stressing me out, can you help me") by all means do it. But for me I think I just learnt coping mechanisms the hard way as I grew up. Most people change a lot in the ensuing years after 13, usually for the better. I'm sorry your sister is going through that.

One thing that does come to mind is to check if there's any external issues that are causing her to feel so bad. There often are. You might be able to learn something by talking to her more?

    Migrating conduwuit to conduit

For a while, I was running a conduwuit server. Conduwuit has been abandoned, and I wanted to migrate my server to upstream Conduit.

Has anyone done this before? I'm using Docker Compose for Conduwuit.

Do you have any work of art (writing, visual, film, video game, etc) that you think is accidentally a masterpiece? e.g. a work with a lot of unintended powerful meaning?

Meaning that the author is maybe not very good at their craft, but inadvertently created a work with a lot more meaning than they intended, or they accidentally did something quite clever that they didn't mean to. Or maybe a work which is good in its own right but there's a particular "unofficial" interpretation which makes it so much better.

Obviously a bit of this question involves knowing authorial intentions, but in a lot of instances authors have been able to state that they did or didn't intend a particular interpretation.

Should I be concerned that my HDD, which seems to be working fine, is 8 years old?

It appears to work fine (it contains my home partition for my main machine I daily drive) and I haven't noticed signs of failure. Not noticeably slow either. I used to boot Windows off of it once upon a time which was incredibly slow to start up, but I haven't noticed slowness since using it for my home partition for my personal files.

Articles online seem to suggest the life expectancy for an HDD is 5–7 years. Should I be worried? How do I know when to get a new drive?

Self-hosting a mail server with zero-access encryption for all emails, similar to Protonmail

I was interested in hosting my own mail server that provides a similar level of privacy for users as Protonmail, ie the server admin cannot read any emails, even those which are not E2EE with PGP. Is there a self-hostable solution to this?

I'm aware the server admin can't read emails that were sent encrypted using the user's PGP key, but most emails I get are automated emails from companies/services/etc without the option to upload a public key to send the user encrypted email. If you're with a service like Protonmail, the server admin still cannot read even these emails.

    How are controllers with Proton?

    I don't own any controllers.

I started playing Dark Souls 3 which I now understand has a controller strongly recommended. I may as well just look into getting a controller of some kind as I have a few games that have somewhat janky kbm controls and are better enjoyed with a controller.

I just wanted to ask for general advice about what controller to get in terms of compatibility. Also if someone has made a controller that's more in the spirit of foss that also works fine with Steam and Proton games that would be nice?

I know Steam is pretty good with Playstation controllers and I used to use a PS controller (don't remember what generation) with some native Linux Steam games, not sure how the whole PS vs Xbox controller thing is affected by running games through Proton if at all? If it matters let me know, and I'll see if I can procure a controller for myself.

FOSS document scanning app for Android?

Concept: beer that is free as in freedom, not as in gratis

You still have to pay for it because it costs money to make. But it's completely open-source beer so you can recreate it yourself if you don't want to buy it pre-made, or you want to modify the recipe.

I have no idea how to make beer otherwise I'd have a crack at this shitpost myself...

Good countries for hosting a VPS in terms of not being hit with censorship?

I'm having a bit of trouble researching what country would be best to rent a VPS in, in terms of not getting communist content on there censored. Because obviously if content is deemed illegal in the country the server is hosted in, the VPS host is obligated to take it down (understandable enough, you can't really ask a company to break the law for you).

I'm also concerned with privacy laws too and protection from them.

I've heard various good things about "freedom of speech laws" and privacy laws in Iceland, Romania, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Finland, but I don't know the details.

Does anyone have any input? And if you recommend a certain host country, do you know of reputable VPS providers in that country?

What distro do you use for your servers?

I've only ever used desktop Linux and don't have server admin experience (unless you count hosting Minecraft servers on my personal machine lol). Currently using Artix and Void for my desktop computers as I've grown fond of runit.

I'm going to get a VPS for some personal projects and am at the point of deciding what distro I want to use. While I imagine that systemd is generally the best for servers due to the far more widespread support (therefore it's better for the stability needs of a server), I have a somewhat high threat model compared to most people so I was wondering if maybe I should use something like runit instead which is much smaller and less vulnerable. Security needs are also the reason why I'm leaning away from using something like Debian, because how outdated the packages are would likely leave me open to vulnerabilities. Correct me if I'm misunderstanding any of that though.

Other than that I'm not sure what considerations there are to make for my server distro. May

How do I change the font size of the address bar?

I use a 14px bitmap font as part of my system theme. It is set to display at 14px in my gtk theme which works for tabs, bookmarks, right-click menus, and other parts of Firefox UI, but the Firefox address bar doesn't seem to be the same size and is blurry.

How do I change the font size of the address bar? Is there an element I can target in userChrome?

Has Mullvad ever been given a court order to reveal personal info about a user?

I've been reading through Signal's government requests and couldn't find a similar section on Mullvad's website. I'd be curious to read about them if there are any. It would seem unlikely to me that Mullvad has never received any kind of court order for information about a user.

EasyEffects can change mic input live. Privacy option for people who need to use their voice in any public/insecure online setting & don't want to be easily identified.

There are other FOSS real-time voice changers for Linux, but the others I found either seemed to have fewer features, be less polished, or be abandoned.

I'm not really a voice expert or anything so I'm not sure what aspects of voice a, like, forensic voice analyst or something would look at. I've just changed the pitch and I sound different enough that I wouldn't recognise the voice, which is good enough for me. Open to suggestions as to what effects would give the most privacy in terms of making it harder to identify your voice (while still being intelligible)

Also, for people's reference, if you want mic input to be changed for all apps, go to three dots > Preferences > General > Audio > Process All Input Streams and enable.

What do you folks do for IRL privacy in terms of CCTV, facial recognition, etc?

Digital privacy seems quite straightforward, because your digital devices are environments you more or less can have complete control over if you want to. But when you're out and about, it's a much more uncontrolled environment. There are cameras everywhere.

I wear face masks everywhere for a combo of protecting myself from illness and privacy. But the limitation is social acceptability. If anything good came out of covid it's the normalisation of face masks, but you are far from unidentifiable if your only face covering is a covid mask. We're lucky that sunglasses and hoodies on their own are fairly normal, but all of the above in combination would draw attention to you. And it's definitely not socially acceptable to walk around in a balaclava.

The other thing is forensic data. If you don't wear gloves, you'll leave fingerprints everywhere, and hair too. I suppose wearing gloves is not particularly seen as weird or suspicious, but it just seems like there are a lot of considerations
