Welcome to the Melbourne Community Daily Discussion Thread.
Day 29/70: First day of week 5 weigh-in.
Down 1.1kg. The novelty has worn off, it's getting hard to stay motivated. 10 weeks didn't sound that long but I'm not even half way.
You got this Nath! What's your target and present if you don't mind me asking? You're almost half way there!
I don't really have a target weight exactly, I'm more interested in improving my running speed. I used to run 10km every day at lunch time, but after a road accident in 2019, I put on weight and now can only manage 7.5km before I need to get back to the office.
I'd like to be 78kg, I guess. For my height, the "healthy" BMI range is 58-78kg. I weighed in at 85.9 this morning, starting at 90 at the beginning of this diet.
But I'm not really fixating on the weight as much as the effect less weight has on my running speed. I used to be able to run 10km in around 45 minutes. I'm about 7-8 minutes off that pace at the moment.
Severely underdressed for this wind on the way back and kicking myself for not at least wearing a light coat. Ya got me, Melbourne. Three weeks away and I lost my senses...
brrr, I just put my oodie on
My unit has still retained some of the heat from the past few days but I'm definitely putting on the warm pants and socks and making a nice hot cuppa
My bolognese sauce tonight was a little too acidic so I googled it and added a little bit of butter as a remedy. Fixed it right up. And so delicious too. 🤤
good tip, i sometimes go a bit hard on the citric acid.
Sunday night cooking, with a glass of wine, and ABC jazz whilst the kids laugh playing Minecraft together. Nice
Some gorgeous light earlier on the walk with the doggo.
A hundred-garlic lamb roast is now safely ensconced in the crock pot for tonight. Only 5 hours to endure the fragrance wafting through the house, and the neighborhood.
What time should we turn up?
6 ish. Bring some crusty bread for the juices.
You mean like 100 cloves?!
About 3 heads worth. Maybe not eggsackly 100 ... The recipe is adapted from the hundred garlic chicken one.
Citizens of MelbZone there is a solution to our moth plague! I shall attract then Godzilla stomp them!
Omg awesome boots!
🔥🔥🔥
Want these boots so bad!
So I thought I'd share some more home cleaning tips.
First up if you don't have one of these in your sink, get some. Cheap from the $2 shops.
It'll help stop drains from getting blocked. If it gets stained due to coffee or whatever give it a scrub with barkeeper friend or my friend Gumption.
Never ever ever spray cleaner on vertical surfaces. Some leave streak marks that are incredibly hard to shift. Instead spray on to a cloth, wipe over stain, leave for a minute and wipe back over. Watch the miracle happen. Particularly good for cupboards, walls, picture frames, windows.
For TV's you do something similar. First gently dust the screen with a microfibre. Then wet a lenses cloth with water making sure you ring it out well. Wipe over the screen then go over it again with a dry lenses cloth. Make sure the water doesn't dry naturally on the screen otherwise you might end up with marks. Make sure you do this before you turn the TV on.
I'll share a tip frustration... Always make sure you sweep/vacuum properly before you mop....daaaah
Yes! The bit behind the door matters.
Hahaha. That's a good one otherwise you get mud.
And always dust before you vac. Work from the top down.
At the p's place finally convinced them to put grip tape on the wooden stairs (3 flights up to the second story). Over the years I'd say I've stacked about 30 times going down them (basically your feet slip forward and you're on your arse). Kinda wish I had a little video compilation of all of those moments.
When I was staying over the other night it happened again but I was holding a glass of wine. No one will believe me but I only lost about a 1/3rd of it which I thought was really impressive.
That's why I'm easy....
I never fail to hear Mike Patton’s voice.
I'm barrelling through s2 of Mr Inbetween but when I say that I need some time to reflect between episodes, it's such an unusual show... Action x character study. The direction and cinematography take it to another level with the suspense
I watched it based on a recommendation from someone on the Reddit DT and I promised myself I would go back and chat with them about it... but I never did... Anywhoo, interested to hear what your thoughts are when you get to the end of the series.
I've been eating like shit for the last couple of months. Uber eats every night, mostly pizza.
Had chicken and veggies tonight and I feel fucking amazing!
For anyone wondering if the white flutterby they are looking at is in the cabbage destruction gang, I found a guide showing how they are differrent from native butterflies.
So the white ones aren't moths but butterflies still equally destructive though?
Yes, that's right. There seem to be mostly the butterflies around me.
Up way too early courtesy of cashews… I should not have put the water they soaked in, back in. Oh well, live and learn. I have been surprisingly productive this morning, although my eyes now hate me. I have also enrolled in T1 subjects which has also caused me to pity future me. Like I want this, but also am just not in the headspace to enjoy the journey, which completely sucks since the feeling has literally been going on since the start. But, life, privilege, yah, yah, yah…
Hope we are all having a nice Sunday morning thus far and those still sleeping, I envy you.
I'm sorry. You did what to the cashews?
You never had cold brewed cashews before?
cashew bath water
Going to see the FNAF movie with the Minipeelers today. Looking forward to it!
Is it warm, or is it cold. Should I stay or should I go.
we'll, if you go there will be trouble
Boil it for double!
Oh, hang on…
Cold. Looks deceptively warm
thank you, will wear jacket
I miss having a car to chuck all the clothes in given that right now it's very much thin skirt and T-shirt with light cardigan weather for me, but by 5-6pm I think I will regret forgetting to bring a scarf, let alone leggings...
i was about to ask this question and whether it is jacket weather or not
Very warm. Little windy. T-shirts and shorts for me!
Decided to hit the bellarine to give the chilli patch a bit of love and someone pulled out my 4 yr old Jalapeño plant :(
It was still good just being overwintered.
RIP little chillo.. we had some good times together mainly in wraps, on pizzas and chicken borgers.
Will have to get a replacement.
Who the hell walked into your garden and yoinked your jalapeño :( RUDE :(( was it the neighbours with the flooded yard
I'm sorry for your loss.
I guess my Jalapeno that survived the winter is still just a youngster!
Some of them go for years :)
There's a myth that the older they are the less hot the chilli but I dunno if that's true.
No moths were harmed making this post
A very hairy eyeball in the direction of persons who over emotionally post about divorce paperwork in the am then FB status a new relationship in the pm
People still use fb? I only ever use it for "Hi, is this available?"
That was you?!
urgh I had a sleeping tablet last night and it ruined my entire Sunday. Trying to fight off napping and I slept all the way until nearly midday.
that reminds me I should take a pill tonight because even though I finally went to bed at an appropriate time last night, I still feel kinda not normal.
Made a stupid decision and looked at the other sites discussions about The Marvels, and some reviews.
I saw it yesterday and honestly it was excellent. Just a really fun, wholesome time, with some great thematic meaning and really great acting. Some of the storytelling was a tad gnaff, but Mario had no plot and Avatar 2 was the same plot repeated four times for three hours. These things are okay, yet The Marvels is being torn apart for no discernible reason.
That's enough Internet for me for one day. Some days I worry about the Internet as a whole; it's so angry at everything and completely opposed to things being just...decent? Everything either has to be "the very best ever" or it's the worst thing ever and needs to die.
Back to finishing my degree I guess
I hate to betray my one time brethren/cousins like this, being an ex weeb, but some fandoms have taken the cultural acceptance/mainstreaming of their medium over the last 10 years as a licence to be 40 year old jerks controlling the narrative
I think some parts of the internet are just angry at any Marvel movies now. I like this one precisely because I'm just there to turn my brain off, have fun, and awwww at the kitties. Felt like Barbie but without the moralizing. It's a breath of fresh air from the THE WORLD IS ENDING marvel after Endgame because the world is not going to end any harder than half the population dead.
Hard agree. Honestly that was precisely what I went into the film for. Velhani was fucking great, the flerken were adorable (so. Many. KITTENS!) and honestly the whole cast were clearly having a great time on set. As you say, not every Marvel movie needs to be "zomg the world is ending!1!1!!!!!1"
In short, I just want to watch fun movies and have fun watching them, without then being blasted with "this is an awful film, how dare they do this to us". I didn't like Mario, but that doesn't mean it doesn't deserve to exist.
I actually feel they should have stopped at Endgame because of what you say, what else is going to compare...? But then I watched Loki which was completely out of left field for me.
I had a full gardening day today. Lots of planting done - it is great having the new garden beds, I feel like I actually have enough space to plant everything. I planted lots of brassicas in defiance of the butterflies.
Wow, where did Saturday night go? Finished watching the Milli Vanilli documentary. Really quite sad, but so nice to see Fabrice’s life after.
Ok time to get out of bed. I shall make avo on toast for brekkie. Brb.
I considered it, but then a cat sat on me, hubs brought me a bagel with cream cheese and Red Dwarf span up Thanks for the memory so clearly the stars say no.
It's been a big day and I'm tempted to go to bed early. But I put up some lights and need to wait until it is dark enough for them to turn on so I can see how they look.
Edit: lights pretty. Am now in bed.
Any advice to keep moths out of the home? They seem to be rampant because of the warmth of the past few days, enough that there is one or two every night, despite my relocating them outside when I can catch them.
I'd rather not kill them if I can avoid it.
You need a resident huntsman. All you will find is the wings in a neatish pile under the spider's residence.
A solid plan aside from the not killing bit
I don’t think this is realistically possible. Cedar balls, lavender, and prayer if that’s your thing.
Massage done. Not very satisfied. Like 4/10.
Has anyone gotten a massage from one of the Uni clinics? I have another one booked in for this week at Victoria Uni's clinic. Is cheap, like $25 cheap and hopefully it's an actual physio (or student in training) massaging so they can get the right spots!
Yeah, done heaps of student clinics. Assessments usually take longer and it can be a bit of hit and miss. Have had great luck with Vic Uni’s Osteo clinic.
Worst I had was RMIT Myo. One student was pretty good, the next was terrible. Disinterested and was literally, “do these exercises and you don’t need to come back.”
You do need a bit of time and maybe a little bit lower expectations and you can be pleasantly surprised.
Very exciting UFC card today! Title fights in light-heavyweight and heavyweight, both extremely close match ups. Whoever among you is watching, enjoy!!
Morning, oh cleaning genius of Melbourne, @[email protected], what's your guaranteed go to for shower cleaning? Both the glass and the supposed to be white shower...
Gumption mate. Wet the shower. Rub the shower down with the Gumption paste everywhere, taps, tiles, grout, shower screen. Let it sit for minutes. Rub it in again with a wet sponge and rinse it all off. Get the kids involved. It's non toxic. You can get it from Woolies, Coles, bunnings.
You reckon Shower Power stuff any good?
Right on. I'll get on it, thanks
50:50 cleaning vinegar and dawn. Spray on, scrub in everywhere, give a few mins, rinse off.
You can't buy Dawn at the supermarket. Fairy is the equivalent.
art gallery trip done. Gees those paintings of old Melbourne were beautiful. And the Albert Namatjira are awesome.
Finally finished His Dark Materials (tv show), it was good but not great. It felt lacking in a lot of areas, and I often couldn't tell if it was bad scripting or bad acting, the bigger names gave reliable performances but some of smaller ones really left a lot to be desired. Will say Simone Kirby (Mary Malone) has definitely been added to my list of actors to watch out for.
Anyway off to rewatch baby Ruth Wilson absolutely kill it as Jane Eyre in the 2006 adaptation as a palate cleanse.
Question. Have you seen the series The Village? It has Maxine Peake in it. It's a really good show if you haven't.
For a minute there I thought there was a TV series of the Joaquin Phoenix movie. That would be pretty good.
that's about my tenth sneeze this morning 🥴
Ditto
Bless ya x10
