  • take the L and walk away.

I'm here having reasoned conversations with thoughtful people. I left the karma farming behind on reddit, and I don't miss it. I can't lose.

The word "see" predates the concepts of neurons, chemicals, and photons by thousands of years. We see objects, not light.

  • The word "see" predates any concept of rods or cones or photons by thousands of years. It has nothing to do with those things.

  • That's not what the word "see" means. You're trying to to swap it for another word like "sense." You see objects, not light.

  • The light that enters your eye carries enormous amounts of information with it. Your eye and a small portion of your brain comprise a highly specific tool for extracting a small subset of that information and processing it. The information you use is only related to the last object the light interacted with, not the light itself (with the small exception being the "brightness" - that has nothing to do with the object).

No one claims to hear the air in their ears rather than the violin that is being played nearby. That's just not what the word "hear" means.

  • Look around the space you're in and notice that you can't "see" the light, only the things.

  • Kleenpodes!

Yes, I know its unrelated. I'm just trying to force in the whole octopi problem.

  • Futurama is so dense with cultural references it gives me vertigo. Truly great show.

  • They're paraphrasing a Yogi Berra joke.

  • English is an amazingly complex language. Sometimes when words seem to coincide, it's just a coincidence (see what I did there!).

When speaking of evidence of a claim, proof is a noun, and is related to the verb prove. When allowing the microbial cultures in a dough to develop before baking, proof is a verb. The gerund is proofing, and what you have made is a proofing box.

Your proofing box is excellent and I am envious. On the other hand, now I really want a proving box. I imagine that I can put ideas in there, wait some time, and the see if they are proved or not!

  • oh praise geebus! finally a "dad joke" that's not a painfully sophomoric pun

  • I'm just so grateful that so many great scientists fled nazi germany. Also that those who stayed behind (this is controversial and not known for sure) hindered and delayed Germany's nuclear weapons program.

  • You read that in Michelle Obama's voice? Weird.

....sorry. it's women's history month and all.

  • "mooting?"

I do not think that means what they think it means.

  • I very like!

  • The problem is, there is no way for only his supporters to feel the pain.

  • Except it does matter. A lot.

No, it won't stop anyone from using whatever language they choose, but it will cause tons of confusion when they have to interact with the government.

I want to go to heaven, but only if I can stay here too. I love the real world much more than any fantasy one.

    Letter From NOLA

The recent horrible events in New Orleans reminded me of another disaster that happened there 20 years ago. This is a song about that.

    Youtube "subscribes" in Newpipe

When I subscribe to someone's youtube channel through Newpipe, does their subscriber count on youtube go up? Or is subscribing just telling Newpipe to bookmark that content for me, but doesn't tell youtube anything?

The reason I ask is because the subscriber count on youtube could be an underestimate that way.

What happens to downvotes when instances have different policies?

My instance has downvoting enabled, but I've learned that some other instances do not. Do the vote totals look different to users on different instances? It seems like some users on instances that don't allow downvoting are unaware that it's not the same lemmy-wide. It would be pretty confusing for them to see their vote go down.
