Is that true? It looks like at least some people have gotten AMD GPU passthrough to work unless I am misunderstanding.
Also, as an FYI most VR games worked well for me on baremetal linux through proton. Half Life Alyx, Beat Saber, The Lab, COMPOUND, Walkabout Minigolf, and 2-3 more indie titles all worked. Although I guess you need to have the right headset - I think only the Valve Index and a few HTC headsets work with minimal effort on linux, others might work with a lot of tinkering.
AMD is ideal but Nvidia is fine. Basically any game that would work on AMD will work on Nvidia (only exception I know of is the VR mode of Phasmophobia edit: apparently this was fixed ~1yr ago). Gamepass still won't work though - blame Microsoft for that one.
That said, Nvidia has more of a performance hit when switching. Ancient Gameplays recently did a video comparing Nobara vs Windows 11, with both the RX 7900XTX and the RTX 4080 Super. These were his average results across 20 games:
RX 7900XTX: 1080p +2%, 1440p +0%, 4k -2.2%
RTX 4080S: 1080p -13.8%, 1440p -13%, 4k -10.2%
So your games will work. They just might run 10%-15% slower until you can snag an AMD card. If you're interested in fully committing, looks like most used 3080s are going for ~$500 on ebay, so you could probably get an AMD card and get most of your money back.
I had the same audio crackling issues in Helldivers on Pop!_OS too. What fixed it for me was following mmstick's (Pop!_OS dev) instructions from his reddit post about audio crackling, particularly the headroom
advice (I think somewhere between 256-512 worked for me):
If you experience audio crackling, try changing the ALSA properties in
/usr/share/wireplumber/main.lua.d/50-alsa-config.lua
. Particularly theperiod-size
andheadroom
. Remove the leading--
from properties you are modifying. Log out and log back in after making changes. Note that any changes to this file will be overwritten on the next wireplumber update.First start with changing the headroom to
1024
, then2048
. Then try adjusting the period-size. Higher values increase latency and may reduce crackling. A lower period size decreases latency but requires more CPU.
Edit: also Pop!_OS uses pipewire by default for a few years now, not pulse audio
I know this is just a meme, but I think it's an important clarification: The rule of thumb is ~6 months' worth of expenses, not salary. It really is important to hold you over in case of sudden job loss, since it takes most people 3-6 months to find a new job (but it doubles as a fund for genuine emergencies too, which can save your ass for stuff like unexpected medical or vet bills).
But unfortunately, lots of people live paycheck to paycheck, so for them, a month's worth of expenses is the same thing as a month's salary...
When adjusted the way the article has stated, moving your head slightly to see the lines is trivial.
Plus, being parked slightly off-center or dinging a car in a parking lot is nowhere near as bad as causing a potentially deadly crash by merging into another car at high-speed.
I think OP's wording wasn't super clear. A bot created the original post on [email protected], but a human saw the bot's post there, and decided to cross-post it here to [email protected].
Note the median IMDB score is around a 6.6-6.7. So 6.0 is definitely below average. Not horrible, but definitely below average.
+1 for PipePipe if you want quick updates + SponsorBlock. I switched from Tubular a few days ago, and it imported my Tubular export flawlessly.
You don't necessarily need to use Obtanium though, the version on F-Droid has a built-in updater. But unfortunately the built-in updater isn't automatic (just a pop up notification that takes you to the .apk download page), so I can see the convenience of Obtainium.

Looks like the group with the most benefit was the 2-3 8oz cups morning group, which would be 450g - 680g of coffee each morning, and they defined morning as 4am-11:59am.
"Some people need a budget to save; others need a budget to spend."
My suggestion would be pick a % of your income to allocate as "fun money." 5%, 10%, whatever; the most important part is you budget it. Stick it in its own savings account, then invest the rest. Then, whenever you have the opportunity to do fun things, spend extra on hobbies, help family, donate, etc, you know exactly how much you can spend.
I'm not even sure to be honest, was just following the solution that others had posted.
Pop's site says that the --configure -a
command configures any unpacked but not yet configured packages. And someone on Pop's github theorized it was related to Microsoft adding their own apt source for VSCode. So it was probably some issue with Microsoft's new apt source being unpacked but unconfigured, and that caused something in apt/dpkg to freak out. That's my best guess at least.
There were lots of other peope having this issue, including myself, who have never installed Mullvad. I think it's related to something in the Ubuntu repos. What fixed it for me was to run:
undefined
sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
Some people were also reporting a broken install due to missing packagekit, so maybe ensure packagekit is installed with:
undefined
sudo apt install packagekit
Then reboot, and you should be able to update stuff normally now.
uBlock has an "EasyList/uBO - Cookie Notices" filter that you can enable on both desktop and mobile, which is probably enough for most people.
His linktr.ee from his official website links to that account. So it's official.
I think the question is: is it actually him using the account, or is it a social media manager?
If you accidentally ban linux users in three[1] different[2] banwaves[3], then linux was only halfway supported in the first place, even if they overturned (almost) all of those bans.
I think the real reason they did it was EA's financial situation. Since money is tight, the amount of resources they were willing to put into real linux anti-cheat probably dropped to "none at all," and now we're here. Otherwise other cheater-prone games like Counter Strike, Overwatch, Halo, The Finals, DayZ, Hunt Showdown, etc would have probably dropped/blocked linux by now too.
Doesn't the "EasyList/uBO – Cookie Notices" filter in uBlock's settings do the same thing as IDCAC / consent-o-matic?
If I played any Rockstar games, I'd be unhappy with their new anti-cheat too, since it needlessly blocks linux, but this isn't the way this should be protested. If anything, this probably validates their decision.
The way this should be protested is to just stop playing. Stop giving them money. Stop boosting their month active user numbers that they can flaunt to investors. Hit them financially, since it's the only hit they really care about. There's a sea of other high-quality games you can play instead.
@[email protected] @[email protected], a Respawn employee responded on reddit and wants a list of user IDs/gamertags for those banned on linux:

They've falsely banned linux players before, once in March 2023 and again in August 2023.
I got hit in the Aug 2023 ban, and had my permaban overturned after 1-2 weeks. Expect to have your appeal rejected, we had to make enough of a fuss about it to get a community manager to reach out to the development team to get people unbanned:

I haven't played in 9-10 months since the false positive put a really bad taste in my mouth, so I don't have any datapoints to add for the current state of things, but I wish you the best of luck getting unbanned.
Don't worry, Seth Evans (touring and studio musician for Black Midi) helped produce this song, and Black Midi's drummer (Morgan Simpson) is credited on Greep's new album, which is set to release in a month: https://open.spotify.com/prerelease/6uPLM4h3oBnZ3IKUL4f20H

Helldivers 2 will use a rootkit anti-cheat, nProtect GameGuard

50/50 chance this breaks Deck and linux support, especially since the commenters' inquiries about it have gone unanswered.
Bogles my mind why a PvE game needs an anti-cheat at all - let alone something as invasive as a rootkit.

Looks like Valve is working on a 64bit and Vulkan upgrade to TF2's linux client
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/11085299
For those unaware, the linux version of TF2 is still 32bit, and runs on ToGL - a DirectX to OpenGL translation layer.
A few days ago, Valve published a TF2 private branch called "x64_linux_test": https://steamdb.info/changelist/21975149/
Then a few hours ago, Valve update TF2's "App Config" to include references to x64 Vulkan TF2: https://steamdb.info/changelist/22010846/
Looks like it's coming soon, in theory should bring some nice performance improvements. But "soon" in Valve Time is... who knows

What cat food / brand do you use?
We've been giving our cats a mix of dry/wet food (mostly dry...), but want to switch to 100% wet, since it is better for their kidneys.
We're also trying to avoid Purina/Fancy Feast/Friskies, since they're owned by Nestlé.
Any suggestions are appreciated!
Edit: shoot, apparently Sheba and Royal Canin are owned by Mars, which isn't much better.

FPS benchmarks for some custom HUDs and transparent viewmodels - some interesting results!
Everywhere I read online, people said custom HUDs made essentially no difference in FPS, and that transparent viewmodels would decrease your FPS. However, I struggled to find real (or up-to-date) benchmarks for it. So, I decided to test it!
The Test Setup
I run a pretty unique setup, but I imagine most people will still have similar results. I'm on Pop!_OS 22.04 installed on an SSD (but the game is on a HDD), running the mastercomfig medium-high preset (with a few overrides: sprays on, hud player model on, and outlines on high) on a 1440p monitor, with an RTX 2070 Super, a Ryzen 5 3600, and 16GB of 3200MHz DDR4 RAM. I benchmarked using the benchmark guide in the mastercomfig docs (although note that all timedemos created before 7/25/2023 were broken with the TF2 update on that same day, so you have to revert to a beta version of TF2 to run the current one linked on mastercomfig's site). Every time I changed a sett

Apex Legends is, yet again, falsely banning linux players

This was a big issue ~5 months ago, and they ended up unbanning all of the linux players (I know reddit sucks, I'm sorry, but it's currently the best source of info I could find): https://www.reddit.com/r/apexlegends/comments/11gaefo/ea_is_falsely_massbanning_steam_deck_and_linux/
However, three reports from this morning (including myself) just rolled in, as well as a few others from the past month (check recent replies): https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues/Linux-players-getting-banned/td-p/12338557
One of the banned players from this morning was also banned (then unbanned) when this was an issue 4-5 months ago.
