  • I'm not saying their philosophy/theory doesn't apply, I'm just saying that what the word "democracy" meant to them is pretty irrelevant in a modern context. I wouldn't call apartheid South Africa a democracy, would you?

  • Yeah words are a cultural construct, we're speaking modern English so I don't really care a ton about the word choices of philosophers 2500 years ago speaking a different language.

We should definitely make sure that our society provides rights for all, and work towards a truly representative democracy.

I think things have definitely changed since 1964.

  • I can only speak from my own experience.

My strategy is committing to planning my day at the beginning of the day (9:10AM after I've gotten my kids to school) and then talking with my wife before bed about how well I managed to stick to the plan. Ie did I actually plan tasks for the day, did I accomplish those tasks, is there anything she'd like me to add to tomorrow's tasks etc.

Planning my day includes assigning time frames for the tasks, including one task right after planning. If I know I'm likely to want to play video games that day, plan a time and duration, and set an alarm on my phone to interrupt my play at the time I thought I should stop.

Try really hard to frame things in an analog way. Ie As progress instead of as victory or failure.

What I mean is you didn't do exactly what I asked, and that's fine you made real progress towards developing a sustainable solution.

I use a paper productivity planner to plan my day and I've found it very helpful. maybe do 30 minutes of research into options available to you.

  • I am diagnosed with ADHD and your experience sounds similar to mine, ie executive function disorder. Not getting anything done until the last possible moment, and then only the bare minimum because it was all I had time for.

Of the various strategies I've employed, having an accountability partner has been the most useful.

I Tell someone what I'm going to do, and when I'm going to do it by, and commit to talking to them about it reasonably soon after the time frame I set.

For example, I never had any success exercising until I started going to the gym with my father. It has been really good for both of us. We both want both of us to be healthier and we're helping each other do it. Sometimes one of us can't go and that's okay, we acknowledge it, move on, and keep each other on track. This has been so successful that I even went to the gym on my birthday.

I would really like it if you'd spend 5 or more minutes brainstorming and listing some different people in your life you could sustainably use as accountability partners, before this post is 24 hours old.

Please either comment or DM me ASAP about whether or not you're going to do this, and wait at least an hour before actually doing the brainstorming.

I don't want to see the list but I'd love it if you could message me with the number of people on the list, and what areas of your life they intersect with.

I'm going to check this comment and my inbox sometime between 24 and 32 hours from now.

  • I'm in Canada where we have restricted some food dyes. I miss the old colours of Froot Loops and Smarties (similar to M&Ms, not rockets). But it's fine because those colourants really do only exist to make junk food look good.

It's not clear to me the exact scope of what they consider to be artifical dyes though. Is a dye produced by a genetically modified bacteria natural enough?

Conservatives have been saying that Dems want to force them to eat bugs, so it's a little strange to be tacitly encouraging the use of Natural Red 4 which is made from crushed beetles.

  • I've been learning a lot about biblical history and early Christianity lately. To be clear: as a layperson. Ie I've been listening to podcasts by biblical scholars, and reading Wikipedia articles. I'm not an expert but I'm an interested lay person. I've been doing this as a person that doesn't believe in the supernatural, because I'm interested in history and sociology, I haven't been learning about hell specifically but more the context influence of Early Christianity.

Early Judaism understood the afterlife to be a sort of sleep/slumber/torpor.

Greek concepts of hades had an influence on early Christianity.

The Book of Revelation was kinda like a revenge fantasy for early Christians experiencing persecution by the Greco-Roman empire.

The lake of fire was not for human souls.

There's also something about souls being fed into an eternal furnace, but the furnace is consuming the souls so the souls are destroyed through incineration, not eternally tormented.

I know a lot of current hell imagery is drawn from Dante's Inferno which is medieval I think, but I haven't really gotten that far in my learning about Christianity.

  • I don't understand the posture you're describing. How is it fighting dirty to use your elbows in a fight? Or are you talking about preemptively elbowing somebody in the jaw during a struggle for the puck? Like a sucker punch but with an elbow...?

I thought elbows up was about positioning your elbows to occupy space while digging for the puck in the corner. I don't think it's about fighting dirty but about asserting your entitlement to space. "This puck is mine, you're going to have to go through me to get it" ...but I haven't played hockey in 25 years or so.

It's all a bit moot because if somebody twice your size corners you and demands your lunch money, it's not fighting dirty to use your elbows while trying to get away.

I don't think the graphics are great. I think they get the posture wrong. I think the slogan is more about determination than strength. I don't think Canadians should feel superior to Americans. But also I think it's gross to see someone insisting we ought to feel shame about the suggestion we should protect ourselves.

  • Breakdowns should definitely count as being stuck. If crashes can reasonably be attributed over confidence in vehicle autonomy then imo those should also qualify as stuck too as it's a Tesla failure resulting in a person/ vehicle being stuck.

  • Jesse Brown from Canadaland had long lamented Canada's inability to define itself except in contrast to Americans. He's right that we ought to have more positive identity markers but I think it has inadvertently resulted in a very robust independence sentiment. Ie because so much of our identity is defined as differences relative to America the idea of being American is offensive to the core of our identity.

  • Mate I'd be buying a car that ISN'T American, because international manufacturers would be diverting supply away from America. I have and use a bicycle, but it's difficult to bicycle to the ski hill with my family's skis.

  • My buddy warned me about the mint the pervious owners planted, and I pulled it right away. It was right by our basement entrance so I frequently peer in and inspect for mint shoots. I think there must be a buried barrier or something (like landscaping cloth) preventing it from spreading outside the bed it was in. I found a small sprig 4 years after pulling everything I could find.

The Homeless Encampment That Could Change Canadian Law

Canadian homeless encampments have become increasingly visible in recent years, and those residing within them have faced a fair bit of variation in how local governments react to their presence. Today, let's look at a remarkable legal case that may change the game regarding how homeless encampments are considered under Canadian law and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

    DC motor speed control

I'm trying to achieve variable speed control on two brushed DC motors powered by a 3s or 4s LiPo battery (~12V or 15V). This is for a nerf blaster I'm modifying, which is why I'm not using a pre-made speed control ie I want control over the shape/layout. I'd like to vary projectile speed with a thumb knob.

I just finished watching ElectricMonkeyBrain's YouTube video on the TL494 PWM chip.

I was initially planning to vary the duty cycle with a potentiometer on the chip's control pin, to get a PWM signal and feed that into a MOSFET. But in the video he mentions that the chip has an integrated over current protection function. Ie the chip will

     undefined
monitor the voltage across a sense resistor in series with the load

    and will

     undefined
kill the output if the sensed voltage/current goes above a reference voltage

It occured to me that I could actually adjust the reference voltage as a way to control the motor speed.

Would this be a better way to achieve speed control and protect my motors

    I met a Ukrainian today

I met a Ukrainian today. He is my age. I met him at school drop off, our sons are in the same kindergarten class.

They recently arrived here from overseas. I welcome them, but I wish we had done more to help Ukraine.

There are numerous places in the world where people are being displaced by state violence, but I don't think there's anywhere that it's being done by a global power so directly. It's similar to Gaza/Palestine & Israel, but Russia can end the war by simply going home.

If we had been meeting our NATO obligations for the last 30 years, would this family have been driven out of their home? I don't know. (I actually know almost nothing about their personal circumstances)

I just feel like we should have done more, and that it's not too late.

Movies that you appreciate differently now?

I have recently rewatched the movies Inside Out and Home Alone, having previously seen them while childless (I.O. as a young adult, H.A. many times at various ages).

The parental behavior draws a lot more of my attention, and it really changes the movie for me.

The parental panic when they don't know where their kid is, or if they're safe, just hits so much harder. Like, it's not that I didn't understand the movie before, I guess I just have a new appreciation for the parents emotions.

Are there any other movies that you appreciate differently now that you have different experiences?

    noob hardware question

I know this isn't build a pc, but everything over there is so gaming oriented I thought I might get better advice here.

I'm a noob that wants a home media server for sharing photos of my kids with my family (across the country), video library sharing to some family members, and streaming my music collection to my phone (and maybe my dad's).

But I'm considering ripping my father in laws extensive bluray collection (well seeing it up so he can rip them into my library) so I reckon a full tower is required for HDDs.

I'm imagining unraid, with a big pile of used drives. What I like about that approach is that I can economically add storage as the video library grows as I/we rip. Or are used HDDs a false economy.

I think the only processing intensive thing in the use case list is ripping and video library sharing. I have no concept of what sort of processing is required. Should I get a graphics card?

Vancouver police report that they seized $60k in drugs, and a loaded gun after stopping a no-helmet cyclist

The cyclist was riding on the sidewalk, and ran a red light (a bit more justified to flag him down). He fled, eventually ditching the bike and fleeing by foot.

I hope the police didn't screw up by performing an unjustified search.

How can I help someone with a gambling problem?

My neighbour (40/m) ("N") confided that his recently retired father (70/m) ("G") has started going to the casino twice a day (all day but he comes home for dinner).

G's losses affect the food they eat (multi generational household).

N doesn't really know what to do. I'm not so concerned for N, moreso his mother/G's wife.

It's not my business but, when I was a kid my boyscout leader committed suicide after gambling away his house so I'm pretty sensitive to this sort of thing. I'd like to help if I can.

    Any advice?

    Adopted by Goose

This goose has adopted my parents, and is attempting to establish residency in their cabin. We suspect it is domestic and escaped from its coop. It's a seasonal cabin and they're planning to close up soon. What should they do? Central Ontario. Near Bracebridge.

UPDATE: A neighbor of theirs is set up for chickens, so could accommodate a goose. And shortly after making that arrangement an ad appeared in the community message board. So the goose is going home.

    is Luke Skywalker a superhero?

    Wikipedia says

A superhero or superheroine is a stock character that typically possesses superpowers, abilities beyond those of ordinary people, and fits the role of the hero, typically using their powers to help the world become a better place, or dedicating themselves to protecting the public and fighting crime.

So yes, he is definitely dedicated to protecting the public, but it feels wrong to call him a super hero. What do you think?
