  • Ok, but, does it really not work, or like, it's just that you would have to run it in a batch and kill the bad cells, which could be unethical on human embryos?

Like, could we grow legs on a lungfish (which Google says has a larger genome than humans) using CRISPR-cas9 if we did not care about botched embryos?

  • Nah, we humans don't need fake imitations of people to practice not being a jerk with each other, we can just choose to. It's the kind of freedom and privilege that comes with "being actual sentient living beings". Unlike these things that need to waste heaps of energy to imitate what we humans told them to.

  • An AI is not a person under any point of view. It is not entitled your respect/empathy/compassion any more than any other object is. I respect people's pronouns but that thing is not people.

Getting mad over someone calling it "it" because you are misgendering it, is the same as getting mad over someone saying Twitter instead of X because you are deadnaming it (which is ironic, considering who owns Twitter).

Plus, humanizing an AI will make you feel less threatened by it, and feel less bad when it takes over some person's job, so you should actively avoid it in respect of other actual humans.

  • I still use virtual desktops, just a lot less because I can just minimize windows instead of banishing them to a different desktop, and that's how you quickly end up using too many desktops, the problem is that then you need to remember where every window is when you need it back. With regular wm you can just press the icon to go back to the window regardless of where it is.

  • Splitting the thread here. I personally used i3wm for more than a year and became white fast with it, then I had to use windows for a month and when I went back to i3 it was a pain, I couldn't do shit. It was at that moment I decided "why can't I just stop forcing myself to this PITA and just use the mouse faster?" And I never used a tiling VM again, personally I use kde on desktop and gnome on laptop.

But, I can see the appeal of automatic tiling, so I raise you this: scrollable compositors. You get both the benefits of automatic positioning and oc moving things in and out of the way, without keeping track and managing 10 virtual desktops

  • A couple years ago it could never have worked properly, Nvidia drivers didn't support Wayland. Because Nvidia refused to implement drivers that followed the Linux semantic (which admittedly was outdated). About a year ago, after many years of work, they published a new semantic that Nvidia was willing to implement. Alongside that, a new Wayland protocol was added so that compositors could opt-in the new semantic when the driver supports it. So, to use Wayland with Nvidia you need both a recent enough Nvidia driver (I think anything after last July) and a compositor that implement the linux_drm_syncobj_v1 protocol. I'm not even sure hyperland supports it, so you should also look into that before continuing.

P.s.: gnome's mutter, and kde's kwin (which are the name of their compositors) both supported that protocol since the very day after it was released, so those are guaranteed to work if they are recent enough, unless if you are on Ubuntu lts which stripped it out for a pet peeve about adding features to lts releases.

  • I don't have such a laptop, so I can't really speak for experience, but I can tell you what I know.

You definitely can use prime to render a program on the dgpu and display it on the igpu, this requires basically no configuration at all on wayland, I even did it on my desktop computer when Wayland didn't run on Nvidia. But I don't know if you can or why you would use the dgpu for everything instead of only selected programs (games).

What you really need is a compositor that properly uses both GPUs and can use the ports of both at the same time, hyperlaneld might just be bad at that. Gnome should be in a better position so you can start from here and see if gnome behaves better.

Also, are you sure you want to use a tiling compositor on a gaming laptop? Wouldn't it be a better experiment to just go with gnome? It's visually polished and goes well with trackpads.

  • Performance Is about on par with windows for everything dx9 to dx12. Dx8 and earlier I think are not supported by wine.

In general you will be able to play almost all games, as long as they don't require kernel level anti cheat, but some online games do block Linux users. In the case of tarkov I can't help, you should read online.

Older games should be fine, personally I played Max Payne 1 an 2 a couple month ago, and the original Hitman series runs better than on windows.

Expect to do some tinkering on some more advanced games. E.g.: Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Alan Wake 2 require the experimental version of proton, God of War Ragnarok requires to enable SteamDeckMode on a config file to disable PlayStationSDK, usually you will find suggestions on protondb.

Some Nvidia proprietary things will not work in games on wine, e.g.: GPU accelerated physix will not work, also on some games dlss will require editing wine's registry.

  • Italy, 16€/month 5gbps down 600mbps up. Also I have a /60 IPv6, and a static but shared IPv4 (3 other users have the same IPv4 and each of us only get a range of 16000 ports) tunneled over IPv6.

  • Unix needed only \n because it had complex drivers that could replace \n with whatever sequence of special characters the printer needed. Also, while carriage return is useful, they saw little use for line feed

On dos (which was intended for less powerful hardware than unix) you had to actually use the correct sequence which often but not always was \r\n (because teleprinters used that and because it's the "most correct" one).

Now that teleprinters don't exist, and complex drivers are not an issue for windows, and everyone prefers to have a single \n, windows still uses \r\n, for backward compatibility.

  • In Italy we eat horses, so they are also farmed for food. I bet all the horses that end up on a slice of bread or a pizza would rather have pulled a carriage. Still they are a much less popular meat, I don't think horse farming is as bad as, say, pig farming, (for the horse I mean) because there's much less demand. "Frayed threads" (lack of better translation) of horse are pretty good with olive oil btw.

Why can ffmpeg kmsgrab capture the tty without root permissions?

I'm using sunshine for remote gaming on my Linux PC. Because I use Wayland and don't have an Nvidia I use kmsgrab for capture (under the hood sunshine uses ffmpeg).

I have noticed that I can enter tty and kmsgrab will capture it as well. If it just captured after logging in my user I wouldn't be surprised, but it also captures the login screen.

I autostart it at login using my systemd user configuration (not systemwide) so it should just have my user's permission level. I get the same results if I put it in KDE's autostart section, so it's not a systemd thing.

Why does that work? Shouldn't you need special privileges to capture everything?

The installation instructions tells you to do sudo setcap -r $(readlink -f $(which sunshine)) is this the reason why it works? What does the command do exactly?

shadow of the tomb raider, native or proton-experimental

SOTTR can now run in proton-experimental (it used to crash due to a missing vulkan feature), but how does it compare to the native version?

Normally I would just use the native version, but got the game from epic, which doesn't provide the native build. So if I wanted to run native I would have to acquire the game from other sources (keep in mind that I own the game on epic), which is less than ideal. But I wouldn't do it if there's no advantage.

Looking for testing of a driver for GPUs with Asus aura lights

Do you have an AMD aura GPU? Do you also use Linux? There's this this driver that needs to be tested.

It allows you to control the lighting of the GPU using programs like openRGB.

I wrote that PR that should make it work for more GPUs, but I only have an RX 480 so I can only test that one. It would be useful to try it on a Vega gpu.

If you have an rDNA 1/2/3 GPU, it most likely won't work, but without the card there's nothing I can do.

On a side note, if you are interested in maintaining the driver it would be great.

    Anyone else experiencing this?

    Detailed issue

Basically Kwin and other programs (simple xdg-desktop-portal or even gimp) crash and they bork the entire screen with no recovery other than rebooting. When the program that crash is Kwin it's particularly bad because it happens at login.

I can now control external display brightness from KDE and I don't know why. Thank you, nameless Linux contributor

This is a short appreciation/user experience story. Tl;Dr I'm enjoying my time on linux

I have been using Linux for a while (gnome for a year with an Intel UHD gpu, and KDE for a couple of months on a recent AMD gpu), and till now there was no brightness slider. Moreover, I have used the same display with windows for several years and there was no slider as well.

As far as I know (I looked up online some years ago, but this info is sometimes hard to find) my display supports DDC/CI but doesn't expose brightness (haven't actually tried).

For some reason, about a week ago a brightness slider appeared on KDE but it didn't do anything. Yesterday while updating some unrelated stuff I noticed the slider again and moved it for shit and giggles, and the brightness actually changed...

I have several questions... and I don't even know which piece of software is responsible for this... but thanks

    PhysX on Batman Arkham Asylum

I have a Nvidia gpu with the latest proprietary drivers, and I'm trying to play BAA from egs (using heroic) but physX doesn't work.

I have run the automatic winetricks (I don't know which ones because heroic doesn't tell) and I have tryed this also the environment variable PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1, but it still doesn't run on the gpu, even if the message "no hardware physx detected" stopped showing.

And if hardware acceleration doesn't work, I get the same behaviour on arkham city, but the game runs at double the framerate, even if using the cpu. Would it be possible to get asylum to run like city? I have tried swapping some dlls but nothing.

Storing SSH keys on gnome-keyring, kwallet, ibsecret or similar

I don't like my ssh keys being stored in plain sight, I also don't like having to type a passphrase to use them.

On windows, once you run ssh-add, the key is stored in a secure way and managed by some kind of session manager (source), at that point you can delete the key file and go about your life knowing that the key is safe and you won't need to type a password again.

I would like something similar on linux, like storing the key via libsecret as you do with git, so that you can access your servers without having a key in plain text.

I think it's possible to generate a key with a passphrase and have gnome-keyring or kwallet remember the passphrase, but it would be nicer to just securely store the key itself.

    Can that be done?

Switching rgb range at monitor plugin

I have a projector that needs limited rgb range, but for some reason (maybe a faulty hdmi-vga dongle) the intel driver selects full range. I want to force the limited rgb range when I plug the projector, but I need it set to auto normally, because my usual monitor needs full range.

I read this guide that explains how to use proptest to switch mode when in wayland. The problem is that running the command when the gnome session is open doesn't work and returns an error 243 (I can't find it in errno.h, but google says its EACCESS). The guide deals with this by launching the command with systemd before gdm starts, but as I said, I only want to force the limited range when using the projector.

I noticed that I can switch to a tty, set the range, and switch back to gnome while everything is still running and it works, which is my current "workaround", and I'd like to automate it. So I thought tha

Splitting headphones and internal speakers on a thinkpad with fedora

When the jack is inserted the internal speakers stop making sound and the only analog out is the jack, as it's common on laptops. But I want to address the two analog output individually so that I can:

    • Still select the speakers when headphones are plugged
    • Have different sounds come from headphones and speaker
    • Mix them with carla or other audio software

My alsa/pipewire settings are all default, I'm on a thinkpad t480s with fedora 38. My sound card is an intel hd audio card, with a realtek ALC257 analog chip.

I tried disabling auto_mute and rising the volume from alsamixer but nothing happens. Then I switching pipewire to "pro audio" but it doesn't separate the analog outputs. I also tried setting the indep_hp hint from hdarackretask but it doesn't change anything.

The hint enables a new "independent hp" option in alsamixer, but it can only be enabled by the cli and it doesn't work either.

I can provide configuration files or other info if needed but since they are all pretty

Can I apply a shader to the whole screen?

Is there a way to apply a apply an opengl shader to the entire screen in either gnome or kde using Wayland? I know hyprland has something like that, but I don't use tiling WMs.

I have an ald projector that I mainly use for game streaming or jellyfin, that has misaligned RGB panels. This model in particular cannot be adjusted, you can only replace the prism assembly all together (which I have no intention of buying). But I have tested that shader that simply samples about one pixel to the left/right is enough to fix the problem almost entirely.

Also, it would be perfect if I could also pass to the shader a uniform sampler of an image file, that I need to perform some extra color corrections. The green color is weaker on some areas, and I have a picture to use as a mask of those areas.
