I'm so confused what you are responding to
lol yikes it took a racial turn didnt it? always does with them ya
Vsauce did a video on this. it's cultural context. eg wearing clothes that old people wear makes you look older. a dude in like 1920 was wearing a tshirt and aviators and ppl thought he was a time traveler
wait, Brunt and Weyoun were the same actor??
Alice and Bob are names of User A and B in cyber security textbooks I think
I remember that one time I learned man was mortal from all my studying, leading me to carry poison around but put it at maximum arms length whenever I pour it into a glass
stop making assumptions about me
I'm sorry but this is fucking stupid. WHO is calling WHAT immoral? Someone babbling on recycling, who the fuck cares about recycling?
Poorest people are 100% capable of making choices that align with their personal values as anyone else. This is such a fucking Christian thread. What, do you think morals come from the Bible? what a joke
I'm guessing the problem with saying some of these things is proliferation of fake news. Like the anti BLM guy, I wonder how much this person stuck to the facts. You can't present anti-BLM without making up shit, and they projected it to millions of people.
You're right that for a perfect logician, only the argument matters, but for humans, no.
just... "court"?? court seems to be going all left of sideways throughout the nation, I'm surprised this got somewhere
I'm not talking about protests though. how do you expect me to hear about it if I step away from the internet? local newspaper? what an irritating comment. can you please say something actually helpful? i was asking a genuine question and i got this bitchy response from you, i really don't appreciate that. if a lot of people are doing things, how about you tell me any single thing rather than just fucking insult me??? who's making it worse here?
oh... so the joke is what if the fascist is fat?
hail corporate
that uh didn't help
keep in mind that a married couple can combine incomes.
it'd be damn hard to afford a mortgage on your own but two people can make it work quite comfortably
debt? our mortgage costs the same as my sister's rent, but we're not pissing our money away to a landlord every month. when we sell the house, we'll be getting our value back and then some. even if we only stay a couple of years and merely break even, we're essentially living rent free during this time
it was a pun
should have tried a more violent response
who is he
Fair question! I'm not sure if there are any other industry figures holding major positions in the federal government but that would definitely be worth discussing if it isn't just Elon

Do you ever get invited to participate in misogyny?
It drives me nuts the kind of things guys think they can share with me. "Women should be seen, not heard" and so on.

Are there any Trek episodes where they enforce the Prime Directive to protect a developing world within Federation space from an external influence?

What subreddit are you trying to replace on Lemmy that needs pumping up?
Ideally your answer is a sub that you are currently posting to but few others are posting to.

Substitutes for a TV?
Not sure a good discussion place to post this. I just want some brainstorming.
Looking for ideas on how to set up a faux-TV in the living room using a computer. I want to put an entertainment center across from the couch and have a place to watch media. But I have no interest in paying for cable/satellite/public broadcasts. (Why pay to be advertised to?)
I have a good collection of shows and movies on external hard drives. I figure I could buy a big monitor and plop it up there with a laptop attached. I could do a makeshift mouse using a game pad and Steam.
I just wanted to check if anyone had alternatives in mind. The mouse situation is suboptimal. Having to get another laptop is also suboptimal. The "TV" would also be about 200cm (6.5ish ft) away from the seating area, so I wonder how expensive an appropriately sized monitor would be. But I can't think of any other way! Any ideas or have I pretty much figured it out?

Do people have a desire to see "THE END?"
The more I think about it, the more I feel like people seem to have some level of desire to see "THE END". Call it morbid curiosity. Call it nihilism. Call it death anxiety. Whatever. It seems like with all the effort people give to thinking about "the downfall", there must be some fascination with it.
There's so many forms of it. Doomsday preppers. Prophetic apocalypses. Global warfare. Climate disasters. The rise of fascism. People see "THE END" in so many different ways. And with the world not becoming any less precarious any time soon, we can only expect these mass-anxities to continue. (And the rich guys certainly have a vested interest in the end of everything. They get to keep their High Score.)
Or maybe not. Maybe human civilization (in at least some form) will continue for millennia more. Maybe we're far off from the end. But one thing is certain: for each and every one of us walking this earth, the end is at most a century away, give or take a few decades.
"How grand wo

You're losing your will to fight.
I'm losing my will to fight. You're losing your will to fight. In the last few weeks, you've been nothing but despair. I am trying to hold it together so I can keep up the fight. But it's been getting harder. All the levity has been lost. I guess I got more levity from you than I realized. I don't know how I became so dependent on you. Isolation has become the norm for us, I guess. But right now, all I know is that I can't do this without you. You've gotta stay strong, and stay light. So that I can stay strong, and stay light.
Yes, you. The faceless mass.

Enough with the Anti-MH Posting
Listen. Y'all need to understand something. I know systemic issues are bad right now. But the constant posting of "I'm not supposed to be happy when society sucks!" needs to stop. This is supposed to be an affirming space with positive attitudes towards mental health and mental health treatment in general.
When you encourage others to STOP GETTING TREATMENT because society is bad?? You are posting anti-MH content.
When you say "It's not normal to be well-adjusted to a sick society", you are posting anti-MH content.
The point is not to be "happy". It's to find meaning, build a life worth living, make choices consistent with your values, and manage the stressors of a fucked up society more effectively so that you can actually do something about it.
But instead, I am seeing posters around here telling each other to drop out of therapy because what's the point with Trump in the white house. Are you freaking kidding me???
Please remember that the universe being harsh and society

My ISP choices are Verizon or Xfinity. Who should I choose?
UPDATE: oh shit Verizon only has 5G but there's also apparently some companies called Brightspeed and GloFiber. anyone heard of them?

Is "food" a social construct?
Hear me out. There's nothing innate to an object that makes it "food". It's an attribute we give to certain things that meet certain qualities, i.e. being digestible, nutritious, perhaps tasty or satisfying in some way, etc. We could really ingest just about anything, but we call the stuff that's edible "food". Does that make it a social construct?

Help me understand Voice Recognition tech
Help me understand Voice Recognition tech
I am interested in getting an app that would allow me to make notes via voice-to-text. I work in a field with HIPAA protections. I'm having trouble figuring out the nuances of privacy related to these apps.
First off, is this kind of software considered "AI"? How does it even recognize that a sound equals a word? Do they use LLM tech? Does the tech learn to recognize my voice better over time? Does it use my recordings to learn to understand other's voices? Is this all a black box? How can I take precautions such that no one except me hears the things I transcribe?
This is just such confusing tech! It seems like it's fairly old and common but the more I think about it in relation to current age AI, the more creeped out I get! And yet my doctor uses one regularly... I'll be asking her about it too, don't worry.
Thank you!

is there no way to rotate landscape gifs?
I appreciate all the hard work you do, but this is a hard No for me. I can't use an app that forces me to view landscape gifs in portrait mode. Is a rotation button a feature you'd consider?

I dont like video games with story
Someone told me to post this here and that's all I got to say.
My popular opinion is that I don't like this flavor of subcommunity

I'm resolved to just watch from my own collection even as I'm checking Netflix
I am over being disappointed by streaming sites.
"I wanna watch X, let's see if Netflix has it..."
Opens webpage*
"Hmm... Netflix usually sucks, they probably wont have it. I'm just gonna say I'll watch Y off my hard drive instead. But let's still confirm that Netflix doesn't have X..."
Next thing you know, I'm watching Y off my hard drive.
Streaming services suck so much nowdays that I already resolve myself to watching something else before I even finish checking. Gotta shield myself from disappointment. Why would you pay for each channel on a TV? Just get the hard copy at that point....

"Why is X so hard to find?"
No, I wont name the specific title. I don't want to break Rule 3. But I do want to understand why a movie or show can be so hard to find, because maybe that will lead me to understanding how to find things.
I am surprised how hard it is to find some titles. Maybe it's because the one I'm thinking of is an old title, 60s or 70s era. But it's extremely popular, even today. It's been on hopping around streaming services. One would think it would be readily available on the high seas too. I don't really know how one creates a torrent but I'm assuming anything that can be streamed can be captured. I guess maybe it's just not as popular as I think?

Practicing advanced Sudoku techniques - anyone see anything fun here?

I'm working on becoming familiar with wings, chains, uniques, and all the sea animals and skyscrapers. Whatcha see here?

Adblocks for TTV?
I just checked out Twitch again after a while and WOW has that site gotten shitty. But I'm trying to watch someone and really don't want ads every few minutes. Instead of paying Bezos to remove half the ads, how can I configure my uBlock Origin to block them all for free?
