hm...

  • I understand this, and that makes me old.

  • Ah, I'm sorry if it seemed like I assumed that. I'm sure he'd have happily taught you these things if his job allowed the time for it.

  • No point in shaming others for not having a skill. If your sergeant didn't like it they ought to have sat you down with a needle and thread and trained you themselves.

  • Hiking these up is what did this as well. Losing some weight finally maybe.

Canadian equivalent of a grip master?

I have a grip strengthening thing. It's a fidget tool and is helping with some blood flow issues to my hands.

I was going to get a stronger model as the medium one is a little too easy. Is there a Canadian version of this thing?

  • I was thinking this was a blast from the past. Then I noticed it's only from 2012. Then realized that 2012 was 13 years ago.

Boomers are nostalgic for the days they could be racist. Is my generation just nostalgic for web comics?

Looking for info on strange "banana" plushies

These strange banana plushies showed up at our local salvation army store. They have no tags or any clues as to what they are. But the store sold out.

My roommate bought a few but he wants more. We think they are cute and you can tie them together in fun ways.

Does any have any idea of these are or where to get more?

Is it worth asking my local MP for an outdoor cat ban? (Toronto Canada)

I know this might be a controversial opinion, but I think it’s something that needs to be addressed in my area. It seems like people around here don't really care for their cats, and I wonder if some of the ones I see regularly might be part of a feral colony. I’ve seen over 10 different cats on my small property (not all at once), and recently, when the temperature dropped below -20°C (-4°F), I still saw them hiding under cars. One of the cats appeared to be only a few months old, which is heartbreaking. Another cat is missing its tail, and one has a missing ear. The area also has a lot of skunks and raccoons, which can be dangerous, so I’m concerned for their safety. If these cats have homes, they should definitely be in them. But I’m also worried that the city’s solution might be to just put them all down. What are your thoughts?

Update: I've done some research and found local groups monitor the feral cat population in the area. I am near a shelter (I didn't know that) so it's

  • Hardly seems like a priority, I'm a bit disappointed to see the NPD wasting efforts on road. We need more tracks and trains.

Though if they are certain it's a worthy concession to get swing voters then it's got to happen. I just think the next time the conservatives take power they'll just sell it again.

  • I'm the system admin of a non profit myself. Honestly there's a lot more we can do to cut cost. But theres a cost in cutting cost.

For example. Sometime prior to COVID, and prior to me working there, my organization needed a "common digital service" (being purposely vague here for privacy). In order to build oversight reports to our ministry we needed a separate reporting service so the ministry could get the data they wanted in order to keep paying us. We also then needed a third service to store all the data since the other 2 didn't want to do that part.

So our "Common digital service" was now composed of 3 systems. Issues grew pretty quickly after the initial set up. Despite these systems being "partners" every time an issue came up they'd endlessly blame each other and refuse to fix the cause of the issue. They would offer to correct the data for a fee. Since we were legally mandated to maintain the data they'd often pay the fees. It was like these big companies came along, and collaborated a scheme to extort money out of this non profit. No one there was tech savvy enough to notice.

When I came there I figured this out. Mostly because I was previously employed at one of the companies involved. Legal action wasn't an option. But I found a company that does all three parts of the system. They can't do the blame loop thing and they were way cheaper overall. Easy fix right? Nope.

As a non profit we are required to hire a third party requisition organization. The process of even getting the new system contract took well over a year. This is required so non profits don't just take bribes and such.

Then comes migration. The slow process of taking data from system A and putting it on system B. They used very different structures so it was a lot of manual work for a small team. We can't just hire new people or even temp staff so it's tonnes of overtime.

So consider all the extra cost in this story, things moved way slower, extra services had to be hired, overtime had to be paid. It is a lot of bureaucratic stuff that private companies don't have to deal with. But that extra cost is the cost of preventing corruption. The only way we could fix the broken system was to get a huge initial investment from the ministry to fix things.

I'm saying I agree or disagree with this but that's how things work. And if an organization is dependent on donations alone it's probably got a lot of overhead like this. Things they cant fix untill they can afford to fix them.

Got my bribe check from Doug today. I took the advice of some users here and put it to better use.

I know not everyone has the luxury of dealing with it in this way. If you don't then I hope you can make your vote count. And if you can do this then maybe consider it.

You get a good chunk of it back anyway.

Whould everyone doing nothing be a viable option?

This is a Canadian asking about the US. Though given that crappy state of things here we could consider it as well.

If the next president isn't picked as a result of the popular vote but as a result of the system being terrible then a majority of the people of the country will have been wronged.

Instead of doing civil war about it, what if there was a mass movement to just do nothing. Everyone just grabs a chair and sits on their lawn or in a park all day and just chills out instead of working, attending events, or really participating in the economy in any significant way. Take a sick day or somthing if it helps. But anybody can do nothing.

In only a few days, maybe less, the economy whould take a massive hit. Just everyone sits around untill a fair election is called without any electoral college or first past the post nonsense.

Obviously there's huge challenges to this. Like finding an end condition everyone can agree on. Also getting a representative to ensure the demands had

Sorry for another "Is this autism or normal human behavior?" Post.

There's a long story as to why I am experiencing this again but it's not really any more relevant then the title of this post.

For older folk it's like that episode of the Simpsons where Lisa, out of pity, give Ralf Wiggim a valentines day card and he immediately starts invisioning a future with her as his romantic parter.

I've identified I have this same trait and I hate it. Looking back I've totally made people who had been nothing but kind to me uncomfortable and shut me out because of this.

Now knowing that I am doing this is at least making me a little more in control and hopfully less weird. But now I need to stop and asses every interaction I have which is itself awkward.

I have to pass a certification exam and I am terrified.

I made a deal with my employers, they'd provide me time and funding and I'd pass some project management training to help with task related to that role.

I've been doing project managment for years already and it's a subject I am confident in. The course was easy for me since I found one geared towards my learning style.

But I got too confident and suggested I could pass the certification exam. I havnt had an exam since high-school and I did pretty badly at those.

The problem is that the questions are mostly scenerio based and I am taking things too literally, focusing on the wrong detials, or considering things from the wrong perspectives. It's driving me crazy because I know what I am doing and I have a lot of pressure to succeed, but this poorly written exam could prevent me from achieving it.

Does anyone else have this issue or know any preparation resources I could use to help me intrupet these things better?

    Suggestions for tennants/renters insurance?

I am with Gore currently they are renewing my contract soon and raisng rate. I have never needed them so I cant really say if they are any good or not. But $40/mth seems kind of expensive.

I'm usually at the lowest rates. Other than my computer I don't own anything of much value. And I've never done anything to require a payout in over 20 years of renting. So I should be paying minimal levels.

It's taken over 2 years and it's been a weird process overall.

I am in Canada, assessment is free here with a doctors referral.

I've been a courseware developer for over a decade now. Part of the job has been to take documents made by instructional designers and make them into courses in various learning systems. Now I only do this as a side gig as the jobs been nearly automated out of existence.

One day I was building up a course on Nerodiversity and it kind of clicked for me. I didn't actually know much about autism. Growing up it was frequently juxtaposed with down syndrome. So I didn't learn about it until my 30's

But I checked a lot of the boxes and decided I should get it checked out.

Doctor said to try CAMH. So I had to call them and explain. They initially told me it wasn't worth doing and that as long as i am employed then there is no reason for it.

I insisted. I guess you got to really want it to get it. Got told I'd be on a waiting list fo
