  • It does depend on where you live still. Many rural areas and the north are under serviced in food products and choices. That's why it is so important to still make sure this information gets out to the public.

An example to ponder....The repercussions of a massive lysteria outbreak on our healthcare system that is in tatters already would be devastating. Add that to tariffs and economic turmoil and the possible election outcome and annexation is now an even more massive threat.

it's about more than just food.

  • Here is a page with the non Canadian bodies in charge of testing prior to importation per vegetable or fruit. We test imports in Canada for pesticide residues and sulfites but there are also ministerial exemptions as well. That means some foods that don't even meet Canadian standards can be imported and sold here with permission of the canadian government.

You can also find links from here to all the answers you may be looking for regarding imported fresh vegetables. They are mostly categorized by product and don't just include import details for 'murica but all the countries Canada imports from.

I was specifically looking for details about lettuce and leafy greens in my search.

    Food Inspection

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/42558199

There are some rustlings about the FDA ending routine food inspections in the US. They have already fired anyone associated to food inspection as far as I can gather and rumors are they will contract out inspection.

This affects Canadian consumers. Vegetables grown in the US under these rules are sold in Canada to Canadian consumers. As an example, where we live we cannot buy lettuce, greens or bagged salads that are not from the US. Most imported vegetables are not tested in Canda as they are tested within in the US system first then exported. That means the only regulatory controls on many fresh vegetables and fruits will be grading and packaging standards. This is just being implemented by the US regime and Canadians need to know about it.

Until this is changed by the government in the ever moving world of trade relations and tariffs Canadian supermarkets will still be supplied with these untested food products.

  • I think a lot of people are seeing the importance this time around. Canadians have a history of rallying to a common cause when faced with oppression. hier drumphkins actions south of the border hopefully put folks into action. Personally I want to believe it has but we will see.

  • I am a disabled small farmer and know much of this from our farming activity. I also searched the government of Canada website to ensure I was correct, for the rules around importing fresh vegetables. I'll see if I can find the link again for you when I get home.

  • I believe after having read a bit about this that they are delegating inspections to contractors according to most reports. But it is not finalized yet so it's all just speculation.

EDIT: They did fire all those responsible for government inspections however. That has already taken place. So if there is no one to do the inspections one can only assume...

  • Personally I didn't use an excuse. Just seemed a waste of time to hide like that. As bad as hiding the booze. I told folks I was an alcoholic and I had a really hard time quitting. It took me decades to even admit there was a problem. It was hard to do and some judged me for it but it helped keep me focused on my goal as everyone around me knew what was going on and my closest friends helped hold me to it by just knowing.

I am Canadian. We have a large German and Austrian ex pat community here that I am friends with. The Europeans were the most difficult. They could not even understand alcoholismand still cannot, though many of them are alcoholics themselves. "It's just a drink" "there's no harm in a little alcohol" "just try a little bit, it's so good."

Stand your ground. It will become much harder than just today. We understand what you will go through to make this happen. It isn't easy but it is so worth it.

  • Permanently Deleted

  • I just can not understand these fucks. I refuse to call them people. No person with any shred of decency or morality would do or knowingly allow this to happen to anyone, let alone a child. They deserve worse than I can ever dream up. I have kids that age, girls, I'd dismember the motherfuckers. I am truly sorry for what the people who should have been protecting you from this did to you.

  • I am obviously passionate about this subject but I want to add one more point.

In British Columbia if you are Native and you want fish, crustaceans, whatever ocean creature you like to eat. Go get it. Want to sell some smoked or whatever. Even as a business. Giver. No one is going to even think twice about it or question it at all. When restrictions are put in place, the vast majority of people obey them.

It's not a fish problem or a fishing out of season problem at all. It's a concerted effort to pit the fishermen and the natives against one another by our federal government. Keeping racism alive keeps people poor and disenfranchised. Keeping them fighting amongst themselves makes them an easy sell at election time and small concessions here and there ensure that it just keeps cycling.

    Anti Canadian sentiment

I've opened Lemmy today to lots of anti Canadian sentiment on any recent comments about how messed up 'murica is and it's constant attacks on Canadian sovereignty.

Don't get sucked in. Let them yell into a void. The online campaign has begun in earnest on Lemmy and it's time to point it out and recognise it for what it is.

These are not real people. They are actors trying to affect our decisions as always happens when American exceptionalism is challenged. Our government had the balls to stand up and say no. We have the balls to do the same. They do not like it and will attack you for it.

    Don't fall for the bait.

I just happened upon this fellow posting into the Lemmy void about becoming a college athlete at 55 years old. This person is going to train for one full year in the hopes of becoming a college level athlete. They have no experience with rowing competitively.

I have no affiliation to this person it just seems like a neat story and we could all use a good story out of the political media circus that we are all inundated by.

I think it will be interesting and buddy (ok, yes, I am Canadian) seems to be a nice guy who wants to try and do something he's always wanted to accomplish but never had the opportunity until now.

I think that is pretty cool and should be supported. Looks like progress reports will be the thing.

Know something about rowing? Maybe pop by and help out.

First three rows of the eason

We live in a Northern Climate so we are just getting started in the unheated high tunnel for our first plant of the spring season. We use all no till methods and no motorized equipment aside from a quad and a truck to help us move heavy stuff in our gardens.

Since we load the pathways with lots of straw for mulch they make compost just from use. We also drop a lot of healthy plant trimmings and smaller weeds onto the straw. This helps them dry out in the sun and eventually compost down as well adding nutrients back to our soil. Every couple of years we broadfork the entire thing and shovel up the compost from between the rows to help feed the plants. This works so well we often have to remove soil from inside the greenhouse because it makes too much.

Another good use for your bigger and well rooted "weeds" is to use them in a Korean natural farming way and add them to water to slowly decompose and release their nutrients. These weeds all grow well in whatever type of soil you have,

What Can I do to Prepare?

In a post in c/Canada earlier today someone asked about what they could do to prepare for difficult times ahead. As an old guy who has been around the block a time or two and also worked in emergency medicine, backcountry/high angle rescue and search and rescue along with an extensive background in food preparation and homesteading, I delved into the answer a little bit from my perspective. Others have chimed in and I have added their thoughts to the list as well.

    Trauma Medical kits and training

At a time like this many people think of arming themselves and there has been some discussion here on Lemmy about this. People getting their PAL and practicing shooting, even buying guns for the first time.

As a former Paramedic, I encourage you to also consider trauma medical supplies and first aid training as part of your preparation.

Lots of basic premade kits are rather expensive. But you can stock item by item if you shop around. I suggest you find a medical supply house in your area. The supplies are pretty cost effective and can be bought individually or by the box. Look in the industrial parks in the cities around you or that you live in. There will be medical supply houses that stock first aid kits and supplies as well as hospital supplies and such. You can also find supply houses online but prices vary widely.

    TIPS:

-Get a list of goods and stock everything you can. (See below for basic list). If you can afford a box instead of a single...buy it. Someone will use it ev
