People shitting on commie blocks, but there's millions who would love to have a roof and plumbing.
The more densely we live, the more land that can be left wild/rewilded. We're not entitled to a tick tacky vinyl wrapped house surrounded by lawns and pavement. Our earth is fucked and getting more so by the day. It's a problem that can only be solved by us all living smaller lives.
I always tell people to look to Hong Kong for housing practices. They don't do everything right, but they're definitely on the right track.
I haven't owned a personal auto for 12 years, my commute is dictated by how fast I walk. And I'm tired of things being designed to cater to the dumbest among us. Look both ways before you cross the road. Know where you're going and how you'll get there before you begin your trip.
Hard disagree. Traffic flows so much better with one ways. If you can't figure out how alternating streets work, then that's a you problem. We got rid of them in my town because the bottom 10 percent of the bell curve just couldn't, and the results were predictable.

They're close to saying the quiet part out loud here. The reason (one of them) universal healthcare gets so much pushback is because an employer provided healthcare is a major way to keep the working class in their place.
I know so many people who have stayed in shitty abusive jobs because they can't lose the healthcare. Imagine if people could fuck off and decide to live a less resource intensive life? Would be terrible for the economy.

Tourism is bad.
10 of the last 10 years were the hottest on record. It's time. I know so many people that will give lip service to the environment and then think nothing of taking multiple flights per year on the flimsiest of pretexts.
And as all too often happens, people go to poorer countries where they get waited on hand and foot, and then act like they're doing some giant favor to the locals. All too often these tourist sights end up being an unmitigated natural disaster, not to mention locking the locals out of their own back yard.
And then they'll turn around and claim they're "helping the local economy" trying to justify it. It's colonialism by another name. If they paid fair wages to the workers these vacations would become much more expensive, perhaps prohibitively so.
And wtf is wrong with you, you can't relax in your own region? Gonna cook the planet because you can't be happy and relax in your own hemisphere. Y'all need to chill it with the air travel!
Effect of the number zero in European economies
The wiki says it was transferred to Europe via the middle east. It seems obvious the Arabic numerals we use today are so much easier to work with than Roman numerals.
Was there a noticeable uptick in trade simply because bookkeeping became so much easier? Was there a noticeable uptick in the complexity and pervasiveness of monied, as opposed to in kind, daily trade in all levels of society?
It seems like the humble zero hit the scene and next thing you know the Renaissance is getting under way.
