A place on the fediverse to share and discuss about commuting by bicycle
Bike rack options - ryfa.com?
I am going to start commuting on bike about 7km out of my total 20km each way in the coming weeks. My current bike rack is a SportRack platform for 4 bikes. It is heavy, very long, and doesn’t fold up. The place I will be parking is quite narrow, and I can’t have a 5 foot platform sticking out waiting for someone to drive into it, so I’ve been researching new options. I need a rack for one bike for daily commuting, would be nice to have an addon for 2 more.
I randomly came across this company: https://www.ryfa.com/en-ca/collections/hitch-bike-racks/products/ryfa-2-rapid-rack
I can’t find much on them, the three reviews on the site are positive but I don’t know if I trust them. The racks are out of stock on their shopify store, but are available on eBay and Amazon, seller reviews are positive but nothing on the products. They’re quite expensive, so I’m hesitant. They look really solid, aluminum like the 1up but cheaper. I like that I could have the 1 bike option on for commuting, an
More like a $200 bike, but still...

Gloves for wind/rain/cold protection
I'm intending to buy some gloves to use for commuting on cold days. I'm looking for something wind-proof, fairly light, and hopefully a bit water resistant.
Here are three sets of gloves that I've been looking at:
I don't really know if any of those are good options. But they seem roughly what I'm looking for.
I'm wondering what gloves other people wear, and if you have any recommendations.
[edit] Although the primary purpose of the gloves is for commuting; I'd also like them to be my general "go to" gloves for whenever they are needed when visiting cold places.
If you've never read it, Frostbike is a phenomenal book about winter cycling
Bonus trivia: Frostbike is also written by Tom Babin, the person who runs the Shifter channel (both on YouTube as well as PeerTube)

The "most practical bike ever" - would you buy/ride one of these?
These bikes are manufactured and distributed by World Bicycle Relief, and while their model of charity is far from perfect (read here for an article with more info and cool background on African bike culture), the design itself is really intriguing.
For sure it's a heavy-ass bike, but if you live somewhere relatively flat and don't need to go very fast (aka an urban downtown area), I can imagine that this thing might be an incredibly useful bike.
If you bike to work, you live longer, new study confirms

So this week is the European Mobolity Week. This year the topic is sharing of public space, but in this community it's all about bike commuting!
How is your commute?
Mine is pure urban area (Milan, Italy), 12 km, some 50% on cycle lanes/path, the rest in the traffic.
Book Kickstarter - This is Your Bike On Plants: Feminist Sci-Fi Rooted in Hope
This is the kickstarter for the latest in my absolutely favorite book series - the Bikes in Space short story collections from Microcosm Publishing.
This particular book features 12 stories from a splendid garden of potential futures, from the speculative to the surreal—all powered by bicycles, grounded in feminism, and blossoming with creativity.
I am not associated with Microcosm or the authors here in any way - just a huge fan of these books. I think there are people here who would really love this.

I just tightened the brakes on my bike
Cable disc brakes. I kept putting it off but it was riding like shit and didn't feel safe, brake levers nearly contacting the handlebar. I had it in my head that the adjustment was like a 30 minute job. Grabbed Allen wrenches, a couple third hands, screwdrivers. 5 minutes and two Allen bolts later, all done. Topped off the tires with air, quick test ride, meat's back on the menu. No real point to this post, but maybe you've made a quick adjustment or repair that made you happy?
