  • If they have a badge and I get away with it, yeah. Especially an ICE badge. Traffic cops have done some good. But I can't remember hearing any story about ICE that was about them doing anything positive, ever.

Watch the life drain from their dead eyes and know some good was done as I have purified the evil trained into their husk like a cancer.

    Everybody wins.

But shooting people in general? Nah. Personally speaking, anyway. I don't even have a gun myself.

I feel the opposite goes for conservatives. They'll shoot anyone they can argue they felt threatened by. But they'll lick ICE boots on request.

  • If your posting a message that has any importance at all, at least pretend to try to fix your before sending it.

    "try, Linux"

    "working closing"

    I mean come on.

There's more but you get the point.

  • We could use more of this feeling.

That's a sad sentence. I feel sad typing it. I feel sad reflecting on the truth of it. I feel sad every second that I don't see breaking news of Trump's (and musk, and (insert every currently elected Republican name here) brutality-record-setting tortuous death.

I wish he could die more than once, just so different kind of pain could be inflicted on him each time.

So yeah, any of you out there that feel this way, please take a trump with you. Take an RFK with you. Take a Boebert with you. Something like that, take at least one.

  • Until the Vatican is melted down and it's resources put back into the economy, then every pope, Cardinal, and priest is inherently absolutely evil and bear no right to compliments or favorable comparison.

  • Well since the bullying won't ever stop, and he's doomed to eternal "attacks", he can take it all way too personally and take the problem off our plates.

And saving this kid from having too many memories of him.

The younger he dies, the better for everyone.

  • I mean I don't really like mj either. He's at the very least extremely weird about kids. Having a Neverland place or ranch or park or whatever it was as skeeves me tf out.

Sure I feel bad about his past, but I don't have to like him as an artist or person.

  • Maybe the phrasing "nothing in space" was off, but I didn't mean anything close to planetary orbit.

That said, you seem to have a chip on your shoulder about the definition of weight for some reason, and I'm kinda curious about that.

  • Oh I'm sure me saying that is interesting from your POV. But I'm agreeing with your point, English does it totally wrong for sure.

And if the -er sound is as rare as you say, then I guess the pronunciation is just implied.

I don't know exactly why (nor do I care enough to dig into the history of this detail) American English went with "lee-tur" or more casually, "lee-dur"(almost exactly like the word "leader", but if they had home with spelling it correctly, than it would've been pronounced differently.

So it was one thing or the other was gonna be different, simply because we actually do have that sound that makes the spelling look wrong to us.

I think I did get a little offended by the jest, but not consciously or intentionally.

I have learned about the relative rarity of the -er sound in most places. It's very common in this language, so that's surprising to me.

  • I just admitted I did that, appreciated you calling me on it, then write a paragraph explaining I'm working on changing it, and I still get accused of boasting about it?

As for the descriptive vs prescriptive part, I've heard of it only as it came up in discussions of another concept (philosophy and religion. They were talking about using one type versus the other as it related to their point, but I didn't know exactly what they meant, because that wasn't what was being discussed directly). So yes, I've heard of it, but no, I wasn't really aware of the meaning of it because the concept at hand wasn't linguistics. Sorry, that wasn't clear. All I was trying to say was that I've heard of the concept, but hadn't learned what it was about yet. That was probably a poor choice of words.

Either way, having read the wiki page for it now, my main issue is that there really isn't (in my opinion) a good reason that any language should ever have a spelling that does not match the order of the sounds used to pronounce the word. Yes, that falls under prescriptive here. This doesn't exactly apply to languages that don't use an alphabet.

You can throw that opinion straight in the trash if you want. But until I find good reasons to think otherwise, that's just a statement of the ideal way to spell, if we were still forming the language.

  • No it's conscious.

I probably should have said something about it being true with the languages I've heard more often.

Things like Spanish, French, Italian... Basically things near where American English came from.

I was and am fully aware that other languages will possibly sound different. The way I said it did sound ignorant though. And with the previous reply, I was assuming they were coming from a European POV. All of that was wrong.

Anyway, add in the "in languages I've heard/am familiar with" to that.

I'm aware of the descriptive vs prescriptive concept, but not for linguistics specifically. I've got it open in a tab waiting for my next free moment. I've spent this one replying.

But you were right to call me out about the order of sounds part. I was assuming a bit. I'm not used to phrasing comments for international audiences 😅. Usually I'm talking to people that would share my perspective and familiarities. In my area I didn't run into a lot of people that haven't been from around here. I should get better about this, but changing my own perspective is a challenge. I'm trying.

    Another EA issue

I know the EA app has been a huge pain in the ass for deckers, but I'm hoping this part is easier to deal with.

I currently have no problems running the app itself (for now). But I don't think this issue is directly related.

I'm trying to play "A Way Out" with someone, and it launches fine (but does look squished like the resolution is wrong even after changing it - nevermind seeing it to "windowed" or "borderless windowed" fixed that as I was typing this). The issue is I can't seem to get the friends past to work to invite or accept invites. The friends UI is just great rounded rectangles that I can't click on or interact with. All I can do is press escape to go back to the main menu.

Any ideas? I don't even have a guess what causes this. For what it's worth, the EA app itself does the same thing on the right side. Looks very similar to how it does in game.

Question about (what I think are) gay selfies

    First, a little context.

So this might have nothing to do with anything, but being ignorant about it, I'd like to at least make an attempt to figure out.

I don't actually know very many gay people in person.

I have this one gay friend that lived near my childhood house. He's like 10 years younger than me, he's really more of my younger sibling's friend than mine, but he's often around when I see them, and we've had a bunch of weed sessions together. Anyway, I have him on snap because of this.

    On to the main question.

He sends a lot of selfies to his story that have him with his tongue just hanging out as far as it goes. Given his flamboyance, I assume this means something gay, but I'm not sure.

I feel like on Lemmy this goes without saying, but I'm totally supportive of that (in stark contrast to how I grew up), but this is such an odd quirk that I've never even heard mentioned in any other circumstance.

    I don't necessarily think it's a cutesy promiscuous thing, he's had

    Diablo 4 gray screen crash

So I'm getting the famous gray screen crash on trying to start the game.

I have finally moved to Linux for my main machine and almost everything is running smoothly except this game in particular.

I using Lutris to get to BattleNet. Overwatch 2 works great. But Diablo 4 just shows a gray screen for 2 or 3 seconds and then the window closes bringing me back to whatever was on the screen when it tried launching.

I've seen a bunch of mentions of this issue, most are for the Steam Deck or are Windows-related, and I've seen a lot of posts about switching Proton versions and VKD3D versions, but I cannot seem to get a working combination to just get into the game.

I don't have a clue what is wrong or how to even diagnose what else to do here. All of the links I can find that mention anything.

I had to stop after launch because my last machine only had 4GB of RAM and would choke after a few minutes, but this machine should not be having problems.

Edit- Game is still having problems even

Is the crashing just me? It happens so often.

My game crashes VERY frequently. I can't run any dungeons solo, because I will almost certainly crash while doing it, thereby losing my progress.

I'm just trying to finish the thing, and not being able to grind reliably is killing my enjoyment of this game.

It doesn't happen predictably, and doesn't happen when I'm doing any specific thing in particular.

Not even able to guess based on time passed. Sometimes I can come back and rejoin my party and instant crash, every now and then I can get over an hour.

It's not a hardware problem or driver problem.

I don't even know what else to do about it. I had been hearing others had the problem, but that quieted down a few patches ago. It never got better for me. This has persisted since I got the game about a week or so after launch.

Is it really just me now? I really want to make some progress, but side quests and cellars can only help so much and I don't always have friends on. Playing a dungeon over and over in hopes it won't cras
