  • Yeah, this is me too. Although, to be fair to my younger self, back then a lot of new technologies actually were notable improvements over the previous tech, and older people were missing out by not trying them. I'm talking about going from cassette tapes to CDs, things like that.

    Nowadays the new thing really is just worse than the old thing. E.g. going from a desktop environment to "the metaverse." Those of us who didn't embrace the metaverse were not just sticking to our old cassette tapes; the metaverse really was stupid as hell.

  • Not yet, but maybe someday! With communities being able to set what their top 8 communities are, and a default song that plays for each community, and custom cursors, and... OK maybe I'm actually liking this idea.

  • This is the first I'm hearing of it, looks interesting. Also I love how a lot of developers have suddenly realized that a lower framerate in 2D games makes them look amazing. Especially when it gives some old fashioned animation principles to a very modern looking game.

  • If there is one, I worry that it won't possibly be able to keep up. Youtube is actively encouraging AI generated content now.

    Unfortunately, I think a whitelist is the only option here. Subscribe to specific accounts that you know are legitimate, and use some kind of desktop app for Youtube instead of browsing the site, so you don't get AI generated recommendations after the video.

    I ended up subscribing to Nebula.tv last week, hoping to avoid youtube altogether. It's definitely missing a few categories of content (in fact it's mainly video essays and LegalEagle), but that'll be my starting place for videos from now on.

    There's a certain conversation that I'm sure you've had if you knew how to code between 2008 and 2015, right in the middle of the smartphone app "gold rush." It's when a person would approach you and say, "Oh, you can code? Sick! I've got this million dollar idea for an app. Bro, if you write the code for it, I'll split the profits with you, 50/50.* You in?"

    This person was wrong about a couple of things:

    1. Their million dollar idea is not nearly as well thought out as they believed it to be.
    2. A million dollar idea is not actually worth a million dollars. It's not even worth $500,000 (y'know, with their generous 50/50 split).

    This type of person tends to think in incredibly abstract terms. They're always talking about things at a very high level, likely because they don't actually know how to do things at the implementation level. So they don't understand (or are willfully ignorant) of the fact that the real value of an idea is in it's implementation. The costs, and the payoff, come when you have people actually building something.

    But it's not just the monetary value that lies there; that's also where real discoveries happen. The growth in that field of knowledge, and your growth as a person, happen when you actually do the damn thing. The benefit of actually building something yourself is not just in the thing you built, but that you learned and grew while doing it.

    And now, with AI, that mentally undercooked "idea man" will get to go through life believing that his abstract, vague ideas really are a gift to the world by themself; no other skills necessary. Even if some of them do end up being valuable in a dollar amount, the personal growth just will not happen.

  • The thing that works for me is allowing the pan to heat up quite a bit before pouring the eggs in. I mean, not searing hot, but you want it to make a little "tssssh" noise when you pour in the eggs. Allowing them to sit and cook a little bit before you stir seems to help, too.

    That's also why I don't really scramble them very aggressively. The bottom layer needs to sit on the pan and cook, becoming a little solid, before I move them. When I do it that way, they don't stick. It ends up being kind of like an omelette that I frequently ruffled up and then flipped at the end, rather than really scrambled.
