Adding flavours to extract.

Hello Brewers!

I am still a noob to this, but I want to brew my wife something that she'd like.

I don't yet have the equipment to do an all grain, and I am reliant on extracts.

I was wondering if anyone has experimented with adding flavour ingredients, like cherry for example, to an extract? If so, when and what have you added? And is this going to be an expensive process of trial and error?

  • The trade bloc point is tricky though.

Any rational brain can see that the benefits of being in the EU massively outweigh the drawbacks.

At the same time, we can see from our voting history that a huge chunk of us do not think rationally when it comes to politics. We're all guilty of it. But some of us at a minimum can reflect on our knee jerk reaction and allow our calmer heads to prevail.

Unfortunately, it seems many of us have a knee jerk reaction that is never re-evaluated until we're faced with the hardship it causes.

I feel like, because of the above, there's still a small appetite for rejoining the bloc. Those who voted to leave and are being hit hard by leaving have no way to say we should rejoin whilst saving face.

Labour haven't been elected to rejoin the EU, and it's likely that any longstanding improvement to our country they can make will take more than one term. If they start looking at rejoining the reactive right will ensure they don't get that second term and we'll be stuck back where we were with the Tories.

  • Even some small word saying something better than 'it could have been worse'. It really cements how pathetic our country has become.

This is all my knee jerk reaction however. I'll l probably say something more sensible tomorrow.

I also concede that we have no other choice. We shot ourselves in the foot with Brexit thinking the US might be reliable and now look where we are.

I'm just annoyed at our whole ridiculous situation right now.

Ministers hope this announcement is a reasonable basis for carrying on with negotiations over a trade deal that could lead to them falling or being dropped entirely.

  • Thanks.

I have glass bottles but was sick when it was bottling time and it was just easier to use the plastic ones. They're basically my emergency bottles.

As for the temp, it seems that with this kit it needs to be on the cooler side (18-21c). The room I was doing it in is fairly cool but not that cool and it creeped up to 23c for probably about 10 of the initial 24 hours unfortunately. When I noticed I got the wet towels out which helped a lot.

After that it says to keep is between 15-21 on the online instructions, and 14-18 on the physical ones. I avged about 16c throughout the brew phase so got that okay.

With the warmer weather coming, I'm concerned I won't be able to keep this cool enough without some extra stuff (was thinking an old freezer unit for insulation, and some kind of wet blanket or ice pack rotation).

    First ever homebrew!

Came out not bad. But the starting temperature was a little high and it has a slight tangy flavour.

I'm trying to find a way to better control the fermentation temperature on the cheap. Any tips appreciated!

One question I do have... After leaving in the bottles for a couple of weeks I've noticed a white residue is settling on the bottom of the bottle. Is this normal? (Pic of sediment in comments)

  • It's almost as if neither of the parties that will win through FPTP (first past the post) care about the people, and care more for satisfying the rich.

Due to FPTP, I can only vote labour as for my views they're the slightly lesser of two terrible parties.

At the same time, neither of the parties that benefit from FPTP will think about changing it and even if they did most of the population would fall for the propaganda machine anyway (see Brexit and decades of awful Tory government / the nonsense that the right are spewing out but gaining popularity)

Where can I get thrown away stuff?

Not really sure what the word is of what I'm looking for but...

I'm after chest freezer. It doesn't need to be working as I only need the shell.

I was thinking that I may be able to go to a recycling site and ask the staff there or something like that? I'm not sure if this is really a thing but I've definitely heard of people finding things that people have thrown away etc.

Do I just need to drive around my city looking for fly tipping/skips?

    Coopers European Lager question

I've just brewed my first batch ever. For my first time I went with the Cooper's European Lager kit.

FG was stable for 3 days (due to some personal stuff I couldn't bottle it on day 2) and the FG matched the expected end ABV as advertised.

The beer tasted pretty good on sampling before bottling.

    So far so good.

One thing I am surprised by, however, is how dark this lager looks. Not sure if this will get lighter during the 2 weeks that it's suggested to leave it in the bottle, it's something that can happen to this different batches, or it's just how this beer looks?

Thanks for any tips/advice anyone can offer :)

    repeated posts

Is anyone else noticing a lot of repeated posts in their feeds recently?

Almost each time I go through my subscribed, local, or all feeds I am now seeing the same post from the same community multiple times.

I'm using 'last 6 hours' as a filter if that helps.

I hope articles like this about the Tories keep up throughout labours time in power so people don't forget on the next GE.

similar communities for mums or parenthood in general?

I'm trying to convince my wife to come over to lemmy but want to fulfill her community wants.

Does anybody know any communities for mums or parents in general?
