  • Basically ration it. Citizen #1346733 each month is allowed:

    • two loaves of bread (any ingredient makeup as individuals have individual needs)
    • Standard Issue: house credit
    • Standard Issue: water credit
    • Standard Issue: electric credit
    • etc.

Standard Issue Credits are expected to cover the complete cost of the median citizen’s usage. Citizens can pool credits to afford larger houses, e.g., families of four would have 4x credits to spend.

This is extremely easy to implement with (evil, no good) blockchain, have government issue them, citizens spend them, merchants resell them back to government.

  • … It was incredibly sobering that a case about our privacy was being conducted both in private and in secret. So we’re pleased to see a course change here. That said, the battle is not yet won. The arguments to break encryption do not just relate to this specific case and we are having to constantly make the case for why encryption is vital in our democracy; nor does this judgment stipulate that the case will be held fully in the open moving forward – as it should be – only that we can know the “bare details”. We welcome this news but we continue to fight for full transparency here.

  • The legislation would force companies to store and provide law enforcement with access to their users’ communications, including those that are end-to-end encrypted.3 The consensus among cybersecurity experts is that complying with this requirement for end-to-end encrypted communications services will be impossible without forcing providers to create an encryption backdoor4 —akin to a master key that unlocks every door in a building.

Hopefully they don’t pass this devastating legislation. One has to wonder who this would be benefitting the most? I doubt law enforcement even cares that much. My guess is the same that is responsible for Brexit and destroying the US. Resist wile you can, or better yet get the things you care about enshrined in your constitution and advertised among your constituents. Don’t think it can’t happen to you next.

  • That’s a great point I hadn’t considered. Why would they even think to change it, that’s how it works. I wonder if I can extend that thought to other aspects of my life to see where I’m blind to that notion.

  • I don’t expect the doctors themselves to know DNS or even adblockers for that matter, but at least have the IT infra in place to manage it for them. With all of the HIPAA requirements, I would have thought a more thorough IT practice would be required.

  • That sounds fantastic. The most technology I see many of them using is an audio recording device that essentially just writes the notes for them verbatim, presumably to avoid having to type on the keyboard. Is being able to touch type while talking to someone at the same time that unique of a skill?

Why are so many doctors technology illiterate?

Title basically. I’m about midlife crisis age (lol) and I’ve been on computers and technology since I could walk. What is with all these doctors who are barely older than me who can barely use the Internet, don’t know how to type or what an adblocker is? I don’t feel like I can trust a doctor who is ok with malware coming in because they doesn’t run a free adblock or even DNS block. I mean wth?

  • The LAP can issue loads to addresses that have never been accessed architecturally and transiently forward the values to younger instructions in an unprecedentedly large window," the researchers wrote. "We demonstrate that, despite their benefits to performance, LAPs open new attack surfaces that are exploitable in the real world by an adversary. That is, they allow broad out-of-bounds reads, disrupt control flow under speculation, disclose the ASLR slide, and even compromise the security of Safari."

SLAP affects Apple CPUs starting with the M2/A15, which were the first to feature LAP. The researchers said that they suspect chips from other manufacturers also use LVP and LAP and may be vulnerable to similar attacks. They also said they don't know if browsers such as Firefox are affected because they weren't tested in the research.

Chex Quest - Download & Play Our Classic Game - Chex Mix

My childhood favorite game. I remember bugging my father to download Chex Quest 2 from his workplace as Internet wasn’t available at home at that time…and by the time it was, I had moved on. I still break this one out to scoop or zorch some Flemoids. Music wasn’t bad either.

Looks like they have a comic, tunes, and an HD version (available on Steam)…What are you waiting for? Get to zorchin’!

    HDMI ARC

    Hey all,

Got a soundbar that supports HDMI ARC or optical audio. Optical audio requires I control with its remote but I’d rather only use the TV remote but all of my videos are encoded AAC which HDMI ARC doesn’t support. Is there a way to do a device specific custom profile to transcode audio to DTS for example?

    Community block lists

With all the noise on lemmy, spam, and political content I have no interest in, the thought occurred to have blocklists similar to adblock lists. Has anyone looked into this before, is it already a thing? Any thoughts on that?

Ffmpeg - fast but bad results, handbrake - slow but good results

    Hi all,

I have been re-encoding using handbrake’s presets (Matroska hevc 480p/1080p) and results are good for the most part, some issues here and there. I started trying out ffmpeg with cuda and hevc_nvenc and p7 preset. Video quality looks way better but audio is very bad. I am using aac 128k and the audio is very compressed and quite frankly hurts my ears. I started looking into the handbrake options and there’s auto pass through and stereo downmixing, etc. I tried reading the ffmpeg documentation but there is a lot there and I’m not really sure what I’m doing.

tldr; Anyone have tips on getting good quality audio encoding (aac) from my bluray rips?

    Where to watch online

With all of the language models (ChatGPT, LLaMa, Bard, etc.) popping up, I wanted to rewatch Voyager due to the character development of the doctor and Seven to reawaken my imagination.

I found first season available (with ads) but can’t stream other seasons except on something called Paramount+. I read through the fine print and won’t ever be subscribing to that abusive service. Anyone know where else I might be able to stream the show? Looks like about $80-90 to buy the complete series… ugh
