I stayed off for a day but I need longer, feel terrible today. Book is a great idea.

Luckily I'd booked a massage for today with a wonderful person.

I default to absurd but what I appreciated reading about stoicism was that it made me feel more grounded. Ridiculousness makes me feel expansive and unpredictable and I wasn't finding a bottom to that.

Thanks, this is good advice.

So uh.. what's the right attitude to deal with this assuming we get a Trump? And I mean personally. I lean towards absurdism.

an attack on men and women! well done @[email protected]

Because it's not fun

Id expect more voting and less comments in political posts just because people may want to avoid direct conflict with other users. I'm iffy on the whole up/down thing in general though.

I replaced mine with a usb cable. No batteries.

Sounds like a threat

It's been edited

Love the words. Once of my early positive impressions of lemmy was coming across longer form comments. It's so hard to get thoughts across in tweet format especially when we're all completely anonymous with potentially wildly different perspectives. I'm following your ideas here and I'm rarely opposed to experimentation. I have learned from experience that there's more to successful implementation than is apparent before you start and even the best plans can't account for real world testing.
It's been a couple days now but I think that manipulation of automated processes is sort of what I was alluding to when I didn't want to commit to an idea. People will figure it out and fuck with it.
I guess my approach is more about patience and subtle changes (outside of experimenting in small time limited areas). What we're talking about would be a major change in the context of lemmy and it's too complicated to predict the outcome of something like that. As a fun thought, there is some point in the history of reddit that would have set it onto the path it arrived at today. Maybe awards? The voting system? The composition of moderators? Changes should be done cautiously and gradually. Onboarding is a pressing problem, but I think it could be treated in isolation until a sites-wide solution is more obvious. Lemmy is doing great! Lemmy users are capable of self managing the issue of ideological influences across instances, even if it appears haphazard it seems to work, maybe, for now. Loads of problems to address outside of this as well.
I'm also a fan of sudden chaotic changes. I have a 'be careful but also break it if you want' thought process. I love the theory of evolution and I think as much as we want to be careful things are going to happen we don't want and can't predict and it can be fun to just throw a wrench in the motor and see where it takes us.

strategic user blocking helps, I dont like that problem either.

It's unbearable if I try watching a game alone but if I'm watching and drinking with a friend the board/banner ads and commercials become comical. They could limit the use of distracting colours in the ads if they are going to ice level but apparently not.

The key to every “killer app” on a new system, even ones that start out mimicking the old paradigm, is enabling something that couldn’t be done on the old system.
This makes me think of my biggest gripe with the social media I use and it's the lack of feeling safe, and I don't mean that I want to be sheltered or have content hidden from me. I'm tired of living in the giant melting pot.

I'm not sure. Maybe I'll try to spend more time in this community, it doesn't pop up on my main feed that much but I usually find the topics interesting. I think there are a lot of directions lemmy could go and I don't want to commit to one idea yet. Categorizing sounds like a big effort even if it's automated.

I think my user blocking has been effective since I don't see content like that coming out of .ml. ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆ should be a day 1 block for new users.
I just checked and in the last year I haven't had to block any instance except nsfw, which is surprising because I never see grad users in my feed. My lemmy experience has been more variable from low effort, snap judgement, or reddit-like comments coming out of .world.

Just being alive counts

I still haven't done that but have noticed a lot of calls to do it. It's not all bad on .ml, I'd never make it my home instance but it's no where near lemmygrad levels of CCP loving tankie trash

Make good use of the community/user block feature and it cleans up well. It took me a couple times going back and forth but I'm done with reddit at this point, at least for general scrolling 'all' sort of content.

How many of you have thought about starting a youtube channel?

I drink lots of coffee and I like it
Drugs, alcohol, and now coffee! I've used a variety of substances to self medicate while in a depressed mood. A few years ago I cut out cannabis, and I stay away from using alcohol when I'm down, but I have no limits with coffee. It seems like I can drink as much as I want whenever I want and it doesn't create the same problems it does when my mood is better.

VR headsets to escape and relax
Does anyone have a headset? What do you think about it in the context of your mental health?

Does Linux emit random sounds or wake up in the middle of the night?
This is my most needed feature in linux. I want zero 'connect/disconnect' sounds and if the laptop is asleep I don't want it to wake up in the middle of the night for no reason.
I have an infinite supply of Windows laptops from work but I hate them with a burning passion and I can't afford to replace my Macbook.
If someone can tell me what linux distro is the most silent and least annoying I will erase my entire Windows partition this weekend.

Double feature: Wishmaster and The Ninth Gate
Here are some things I found in common between these two movies:
Alexandra and Corso
The jewel and the book
Lots of dialogue
Machiavellian horror
Cigarettes
Soundtrack
The Ninth Gate
- Must watch
Wishmaster
- Average 90s movie

Why don't unions ask for more?
I'm hoping someone with knowledge of collective agreements and unions can help me understand why union members would agree to 2 weeks vacation. Doesn't a union hold more power for negotiation?
More than 1 year of continuous employment -> 2 weeks
From what I can tell this is less than most regular employers (maybe food industry is like that though).
I'm looking at forming a collective agreement at my workplace but seeing this result is discouraging.

Mood matrix and work
The mood matrix (ie the Microsoft logo). A four quadrant grid to plot energy and pleasantness. Some charts have 100 emotions, others have 4. You can find one online, here are some example (https://transkatgirl.github.io/TheMoodMeter/), https://duckduckgo.com/?q=mood+matrix+chart+meter+-app&t=ffab&iar=images.
Description Blue: Low energy, low pleasantness. This is where depression sits.
Red: High energy, low pleasantness. This is where anger goes.
Yellow: High energy, high pleasant. Festive.
Green: Low energy, high pleasant. Serene, content, calm.
Maybe you know this already. Maybe you also know that you can try to pair your activities with your mood. So why am I sharing? It's a prompt. I've heard of this before, never bothered to try it or never did it successfully. It's worth trying if you're struggling right now and have to work.
My week has been rough, mental health dropped of a cliff after being solid for several weeks. Monday, the usual, 'I can't do this right

A hurdle towards reducing the environmental impact of automobile manufacturing
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/19780050
In an interview with POLITICO, Cleveland-Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves said the Ohio-based company produces the steel with the lowest carbon emissions in the world. But he said his company cannot persuade buyers, mostly in the automobile sector, to pay the price to cover the costs of producing more environmentally friendly steel.
Cars! Fuck em.

Dang. This looks like a problem.
2024's Persistent Warmth

This year is increasingly diverging from past El Nino years.

cold/flu season depression
I caught covid a couple weeks ago and it's been draining physically as expected but also mentally. Starting week 3 now of not really being able to do anything except walk around the block. Bad habits creeping in. I feel like crap. Spending way too much time on youtube/social media.
I remember in the past that when I started to recover from an illness I'd get a boost of motivation, but I hadn't noticed that I was actually feeling depressed.
I think part of it was feeling weak and not being able to counter intrusive thoughts. All the stress of regular life sort of piled on in and I had no defence against it.
Basic, advanced, and optional ways to save money
Here are my basics:
- Hydroponics: lettuce, basil, strawberries, microgreens. Cost to implement well ~ $350CDN
- Yoghurt: Cost to implement well ~ $50
- Crochet + yarn: mainly for making dishcloths. $5
- Mayo: I like mayo, obviously, but it doesn’t last very long. Has anyone made mayo that lasts as long as store bought?
More advanced ideas?
- locally sourced meat and eggs: is this cheaper? I’m in Vancouver BC and there are a lot of farms in the valley. Logistics seems challenging.
- jarring: is it worth learning how to do this and investing in the equipment? volunteering at a farm: I’m sure this would net some food
- solar power or bike generator: electricity is cheap here
- minimalism: I’m realizing this is a lifestyle. It has taken me a while to reduce, and I’m still reducing. Are most of you like this?
And things that can save money, but I don’t want to do:
- Bread: I don’t like making bread. Bread machine vs. buying a mixer?
- Beer: I’d like to but last time I tried it was m

Miyazaki’s How do you live?
This is coming out next week and I just heard about it. No trailers, just a [poster](https://a.ltrbxd.com/resized/film-poster/4/3/8/6/9/2/438692-how-do-you-live--0-230-0-345-crop.jpg?k=53795dd798. I've never seen a Ghibli movie in theatres, and haven't been to the theatre in a while but this is tempting.
