  • This makes me think of the Ani DiFranco lyrics:

I am not an angry girl
But it seems like I've got everyone fooled
Every time I say something they find hard to hear
They chalk it up to my anger
And never to their own fear

Rather than take what we do or say at face value, there's some kind of interpretation that is meant to diminish us. So assertive becomes bitchy, and honest becomes angry. 🙄

  • In my early twenties I worked in the main office for a company that staffed medical imaging personnel (e.g., x-ray techs and sonographers) to local facilities. It was an office full of ladies and only one guy, and this guy was a jerk. His job was to handle the scheduling for the techs. He had been a daytrader on Wall Street but couldn't handle the stress, so I guess he was slumming it with us for a while. He was a very intense dude with no chill, and he clearly had a pretty low opinion of women in general.

Anyway. One of our ultrasound techs was heavily pregnant and feeling unwell, so she called out sick one morning. And this douchebag went on a huge angry rant about how being pregnant isn't a sickness, it's not an excuse to miss work, his wife never took a sick day during her pregnancy, and how the tech was creating more work for him to have to scramble to find someone to replace her at the last minute. And nobody said anything - all of the other ladies in the office were just silent. And I guess my New Jersey came out, because I told him the fuck off. Told him that he has no goddamn idea what it's like to be pregnant, and no right to judge her for taking a sick day, and he's in an office full of women, so he should be respectful and keep his sexist tirade to himself because nobody wanted to hear it.

I was so sure I was going to get reprimanded for that, but a bunch of the women in the office thanked me for saying something. I was really surprised! Even my boss said something like "yeah, you probably shouldn't have done that, but I'm glad you did."

  • Not to nitpick but I think chav is more like white trash for Americans. Redneck is more rural or Southern, and may or may not be white trash. Although I suppose there are chavs of color so it's not a perfect analogy.

    • Protect your time and your peace. You don't always have to say yes to every request or invitation. Get comfortable with saying no and advocate for yourself.
    • Prioritize your physical health. Drink a bunch of water, commit to a regular weightlifting regimen, learn about nutrition, count your calories and macros, watch out for saturated fat and limit your sugar, eat a fuckton of protein (1 gram per pound of ideal body weight), make sure you get at least 25 grams of fiber daily, and limit alcohol and caffeine. The goal is to age healthily!
    • SUNSCREEN. For godsake use mineral sunscreen with both titanium and zinc. Not because it'll help keep you looking young (although that is a nice side effect), but because you are pale as fuck and the dermatologist is gonna have to remove a bunch of things from you in your thirties, and you'll hate the scars.
    • Yes you need to floss. No it's not optional.
    • Learn to differentiate between need and want. I need a roof over my head. I want that new eyeshadow palette. Most of your spending should go toward needs, and set aside a small amount for wants. The rest goes in savings (consider that a need too).
    • It's OK to be imperfect, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't strive for perfection.

    And

    • Be proud of yourself!

    Help me find a fragrance?

Hi friends! I'm looking to buy a fragrance and am hoping you guys might have some suggestions.

I want something that screams "peach" without being powdery or overly floral. I'm hoping for something gourmand/lactic (but not overly sweet!), fruity, or lightly floral (wearable in the daytime), or to go in another direction completely, something peach with spice, an evening scent sort of like Angel Share Paradis by Kilian (but peach instead of raspberry).

I'm more interested in perfumes, less interested in body sprays, but will give anything a shot.

Things I've already tried include Phlur's Apricot Privée, Phlur's Peach Skin, and Ellis Brooklyn's Peaches. Out of these, I like Peaches the most, but it's kind of a simple scent. I'd like something a little more complex. I had high hopes for Peach Skin but the sandalwood is really overwhelming (it smells so powdery!). And Apricot Privée is more complex but also smells very powdery and although it's spicy, I feel like it's an old-fashio

    I got my first pull-up!

I don't know where else to share this, but I'm so proud of myself so I've gotta post it somewhere. I've finally got my first unassisted pull-up! It wasn't a goal I was working super hard toward, but I've noticed a lot of new muscle definition in my back, probably because I do a lot of rows, especially bird-dog rows and renegade rows. So I tried a pull-up and I was able to do one pretty easily! Not bad for a middle-aged lady! Now I've got a goal to do three. :)

How to get rid of red status bar message?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S21 and I just got the new OneUI update. Now when I watch media in Jerboa there's an annoying scrolling notification that appears:

How do I get rid of this?

Also how do I get rid of whatever this is in my edge tray?

    Thanks in advance!

Edit: I figured out the first one, search settings for the Now Bar and disable whatever you don't want to see

    Any advice about starting tretinoin?

Hey friends. I've recently realized that what I thought were freckles is actually melasma, and my dermatologist has prescribed me tretinoin for it. I have very pale skin, generally normal in the winter and a little oilier in the T-zone during the summer, but it can dry out really badly with things like AHA. From what I've heard, tret is pretty drying. My dermatologist recommended that I start with applying it only two nights a week, and using a pea-sized amount mixed into my moisturizer. I use the Tatcha Water Cream moisturizer, which is pretty light and has been great for me, but with tret I'm wondering if I'll need a heavier moisturizer. I'm also worried that my usual double-cleansing will worsen the dryness from tret. I double-cleanse with an oil balm to remove my mineral sunblock, then with the Tatcha Rice Wash to get rid of the sunblock & oil balm residue. But I'm thinking the rice wash might be irritating because it's got a (mild) physical exfoliant, so maybe I need to find somet

Ladies, help me choose nail polish for a St Paddy's Day fest this weekend! I will be wearing all the tacky plastic shamrock shit the grocery store will sell me (plus green eyeshadow). Here are the contenders (from left to right):

    ILNP - Reminisce
    ILNP - 1UP
    Cirque Colors - High Society
Cirque Colors - Mood Ring (magnetic)
    Cirque Colors - Ethel
Orly - It's Not Rocket Science
    Sinful Colors - Calypso

Which one should I go with?

    Are gifs broken?

Since the last release, I find that gifs won't play in Jerboa anymore. For example, this comment just appears as a static image for me, even when I click on it. Do you see the same behavior?

Edit: solved by user merde alors:

did you enable "auto play GIFs" in settings>look&feel ?

Then close and reopen the app and that should fix it.

Update on my favorite lady 💚

A few weeks ago I posted that my greyhound Greta was in the hospital, and so many of you left such nice comments and well wishes - thank you! She's been back home for a couple weeks now and is doing great.

Here she is with her latest bandage (featuring a G💚 decoration because my vet's office is the best!):

Decrease swipe sensitivity, and add vote coloration?

Jerboa devs, thank you so much for the latest updates - I'm really digging the swipe-to-vote functionality! I do find that it's a little too sensitive and registers votes when I'm simply trying to scroll up or down in my feed or a comments section. I guess I don't always scroll in a perfectly vertical path. Would it be possible to decrease the sensitivity for the swipe-to-vote - maybe requiring a greater deviation from the vertical before a vote registers?

Another really helpful feature would be to add vote indicators to the right of comments - the entire rightmost edge of the comment could have a color matching the vote I gave it, or no color if I haven't voted. Often if I'm reading a long comment I upvote it halfway through, then by the end of the comment I can't remember if I've voted so I have to either long-press or scroll back up to find out. Color indicators in the margin would be helpful!

Help me get glass skin in my forties!

I've always had pretty nice, low-maintenance skin but now that I'm in my forties I find it needs extra attention. One thing I'd really like to improve is getting the glassy look. It seems like most women who achieve this are pretty young and/or on tret. I don't want to try tret because I'm very pale and already sun-sensitive. (At this point I've lost count of how many atypical things my dermatologist has lopped off, despite religiously using mineral sunscreen!)

My current skincare routine is here. It's definitely made a difference for me but I'm looking to refine it.

What can I tweak to get glass skin? Or is it even possible at my age without tret?
