  • I’m starting to suspect 99¢ isn’t a sustainable price point.

  • This doesn’t make sense as described. The Mac and its apps are optimized for keyboard and mouse. A tablet form factor would at a minimum require Apple Pencil; fingers aren't precise enough. Combine that with the terrible iOS/iPad virtual keyboard and it does not seem compelling.

  • The repost bots often use oddly-phrased headlines -- often commenters will even talk about how weird the headline is. I can’t tell if the posters are actually bots, or if they are content farmers from certain countries. (The odd phrasing may sound natural in their language.)

Another tactic is to post an obviously incorrect headline to draw engagement, like mis-identifying a picture of the Empire State Building as Chicago.

Both of these happen frequently with image posts.

  • Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

  • The CPI is a key economic indicator. It’s unlikely that banks and markets would tolerate that kind of meddling.

But, if the CPI was changed for political reasons, there are other similar stats.

In plain language: Wall Street can make or lose billions of dollars based on correctly/incorrectly forecasting this stat, so you can bet your ass they have accurate data. Some of it is private; some is available to paying customers. Even if the data is not public, it is often publicly characterized, for example, in economic forecasts and in publications like The Economist.

Some examples of alternative CPI sources are: PriceStats and The Economist’s Intelligence Unit. Both require paid access.

Be aware that freely-available stats may be published with political agendas, by Fox News conspiracy theorists, etc.

  • That’s the Consumer Price Index.

There’s also the related Producer Price Index which unfortunately does not include tariffs but will be interesting to watch.

If you are an American, how are you preparing for the upcoming tariffs and possible trade war?

What impact do you think it will have on you?

Are there critical items to purchase now that will be too expensive to afford next year?

Are you changing your savings or investments?

  • Apple has not made the necessary APIs available. Only those two apps have animated icons. They’re made by Apple and so they are able to use the private APIs needed to do it.

  • It’s real. House & Garden Magazine, December 1971, page 127.

Also see the ad for “Lady Alsons Personal Shower” on page 28, and the Insta-Jet Propane Flame Gun, only $9.99, on page 113!

  • I’m picturing a vast apple pie desert with an ice cream oasis.

  • Or they changed the headline and due to caches CDNs or other reasons you didn’t get the newer one.

archive.today has your original headline cached.

Thanks for posting. While it’s a needlessly provocative headline, if that’s what the article headline was, then that is what the Lemmy one should be.

  • A very poor Lemmy article headline. The linked article says “alleged” and clearly there were multiple factors involved.

  • It seems like “globally” doesn’t include the US this time. We need more affordable options here and Stellantis needs to get in the game.

  • Someone, maybe Elon, told him some stuff about hydrogen vehicles and he’s regurgitating it in a jumbled way.

He’s always been incoherent and intellectually lazy. Not good qualities for a president. Now combine that with burnout from doing rally after rally and you get this. But I’m not sure I’d describe it as cognitive decline.

  • I have an EV with 250 miles range. Typically gets more than that, not less, in the summer with AC on.

  • Very few people will be able to use it: only iPhone 15 Pro and higher. Most users won’t have a capable phone until their next upgrade in 1-3 years.

Hopefully by then they’ve caught up to where Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta are today.

  • About US$8,500 with 110 km range and can be ordered from their web site. https://cargen.com/product/ape-e-city-fx/. The petrol version is US$3,500.

  • Inflation has been falling for a couple years and is fairly low right now, though not as low as it was back when interest rates were zero.

The dollar has been fairly strong in recent years.

    https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/index/dxy/charts

Inflation in 2022 was likely due to price gouging with companies like Exxon Mobil reporting record or near-record profits at that time.

    https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/XOM/exxon/gross-profit

By late 2022, companies had jacked up prices high enough that the demand curve had likely reached the “crossover” point. Since then prices and inflation have been falling back to normal.

I’ve been locked out of PayPal for years because of their mistake

About 3 or 4 years ago PayPal added the option to buy cryptocurrency, which I thought I’d try. (Dumb idea 🙄)

Part of the sign up process was glitched. I retried and clicked submit one too many times, I guess. Now I’ve been unable to use PayPal for years. They blocked me because THEIR SITE was broken, but the web page essentially accuses me of being a criminal and asks for my bank records. No way in hell.

This was just for me to pay others. I can only imagine how awful PayPal is if you are a vendor.

    Fuck PayPal.

I see this error almost every time I open the comments on a post.

My server is lemm.ee. Does it not support the “mark as read” feature?

Apple Store across the street from an Apple Store -- are there any closer than this?

Comedian Lewis Black has a routine about “a Starbucks across the street from a Starbucks”. Apple Stores aren’t nearly as common.

Unless you’re in Glendale, California -- where Apple Glendale Galleria is across the street from Apple The Americana at Brand.

Are there any other Apple Stores this close together?

The stores are less than 150 meters apart, but unfortunately they aren’t within sight of each other. As you exit Apple The Americana at Brand, you won’t see the other Apple Store — only a notably uncrowded Samsung Experience Store.

    How reliable are EV chargers?

New EV owner here. We charge at home so I don’t need to use them, but stores nearby have chargers. I tried them to see how they work. They are often broken.

One store has a Volta charger (free!). It worked great the first time; the next time I went it was broken.

Walmart has an Electrify America fast charger. The first time I went, 1 of 3 was not working. The next time I went, 1 of 3 was not working, but it was a different one.

Was I unlucky, or are these charging networks unreliable? Has it been getting better or worse over time?

How can I block a user from my timeline?

On the “all” timeline I see posts by bots that I want to filter out. I have tried blocking the “lemmit bot” in Memmy, but I still see its posts.
