  • Just returned from the polling station and I can exclusively reveal to the fediverse that I did not vote for Donald Trump.

  • Yeah whatever they improved for the remaster, it pales in comparison to the upgrades available in modded Skyrim.

  • the doomed king and his armed guards need to escape through a secret passage that just so happens to cut through my jail cell seems a little too convenient

I remember playing it for the first time in 2006 and I had completely forgotten about that guff by the time I got out of the tutorial. My character went on to ignore the main quest for many dozens of hours.

Of course several of those hours were spent struggling to defeat boars that started appearing on the road at level 5. They were insanely tough since I'd accidentally made the most difficult possible custom class. At least the remaster doesn't have that problem. Instead the combat is very easy — unless you go up one level in difficulty in which case you'll probably be killed by a mudcrab.

  • As a merchant, that's a decision you're free to make as you see fit.

  • It's not as if I did an exhaustive search to sift through all the evidence, but what I found was this: https://lemm.ee/post/60365167

  • That is what their mod was accused of having done, albeit on reddit. If Kev believes those allegations to be unfounded, he's done a poor job of expressing that.

  • Alas, not everyone on the fediverse is so friendly and welcoming towards people who "express certain political views" by using a position of power to suppress those they disagree with.

  • Come on Visa, that's the sort of favour you're supposed to quietly lobby governments for behind closed doors, you really shouldn't let it get out in public like this.

  • Whether or not you have to be, if you are online for a single player game they are probably collecting data. Or trying to. Use opensnitch.

  • Yeah that's the user everyone was complaining about, who allegedly misbehaved on reddit on many occasions and was a fosstodon moderator.

  • When we swap face-to-face conversations for social media engagement, everyone loses

Given that this is from TVO I think it should be pointed out that one could replace "social media" with "television" in that sentence and it would be even more true.

  • Update: The @carrotcypher user page on fosstodon is now returning "410 Gone"

  • Update: The @carrotcypher user page on fosstodon is now returning "410 Gone"

  • I imagine he is also willing to listen to ideas from the people just the same in government

I was just thinking that in addition to his "establishment-friendly outlook" when it comes to finance and economics, another danger of Carney leading a majority government is that being aware of his own limited expertise when it comes to other issues, he will be easily swayed by the same combination of advisors, wonks, and lobbyists that led Trudeau to his worst decisions. Just as he has already been persuaded that subsidies to oil companies for "carbon capture" is a great idea, for example.

On the other hand maybe his character and judgement will be strong enough to do better.

  • I like my women the way I like my passwords: Long, cryptic, and full of entropy.

  • With that hint I found this: https://lemm.ee/post/60365167

  • I have a vague memory that something like that happened many years ago but if something more recent happened it's news to me.

  • It's striking how many of the things they've changed seem to be slightly for the worse:

    • the lockpicking and persuasion minigames are a little less fun
    • the level-up choices are dumbed down
    • the speed at which you gain levels is even faster
    • the local map is weirdly hard to find for some reason
    • the HUD looks worse
    • there is much telemetry
    • there are framerate problems

Then there are the things I'd have expected them to improve that are unchanged:

    • they didn't give us better difficulty settings
    • there's no walking slowly with the controller
    • level scaling has most (but not all) of the same problems it did
    • the day/night cycle still flies past at hyperspeed
    • horses still report your crimes to the telepathic guards (okay I guess they had to keep that)

Of course there are mods to fix most of those problems. Oblivion is a great game, and it's good to see a lot of new people playing it for the first time.

  • Pierre is a hapless doofus but if everyone keeps moving towards "the centre" politics will collapse into a black hole.

  • Okay, sure. Next do the same with its real estate holdings.

Justin Ling: While everyone focuses on Carney and Poilievre, some of the election’s most interesting ideas are coming from

Even before the election was called, the Greens unveiled their plan to counter the global and domestic challenges posed by Donald Trump’s chaotic government. It’s chock full of good ideas, including many you wouldn’t normally expect: Improving the east-west energy grid to beef up national energy sovereignty; ramping up domestic artillery production; the stoppage of observing U.S-imposed intellectual property laws; and integrating more closely with the European, Australian, and Ukrainian defence industries.

Well I decided to upgrade to Debian testing last night on my desktop here, just for fun. It seems fine.

Well I decided to upgrade to Debian testing last night on my desktop here, just for fun. It seems fine.

Xfce4-screensaver wasn't in bullseye so I had an old locally compiled version installed, which may have been the cause of some video problems. Replaced with the debian build.

A broken bash completion script I had removed came back and was annoying until I remembered what I'd done.

Old searx install didn't work, neither did latest searxng install script from git. Too many python errors for me, so I gave up and ran the docker container instead. That was the only frustrating part.

Skyrim runs more smoothly and amdgpu hasn't crashed yet. It had been getting bad lately, locking up during video playback sometimes (maybe once a week) in the past month or two. I think perhaps running the newest kernels with the old mesa was a bad combination.

I ran out of disk space on the EFI partition during install, but it recovered no problem.

Other than that no problems so far.

More carbon dioxide in oceans could harm carbon-eating microbes

The carbon dioxide (CO2) spewing from human activities is not only changing Earth’s atmosphere, it’s also rapidly acidifying the planet’s oceans. In 50 years, that acidification could reduce the oceans’ ability to absorb CO2 by 10% as it takes a toll on phytoplankton

... Nevertheless, it’s still too early to conclude that the projected declines in phytoplankton will inevitably reduce CO2 uptake by the world’s oceans, Church and others caution. It’s still possible the declines could be offset by higher plankton growth rates at high latitudes and other global processes involved in carbon cycling. However, Church says, “It certainly doesn’t help.”

If modded Skyrim isn't the best game you ever played, you just need to add more mods. Sometimes they combine in ways that are better than expected. Today's discoveries:

    1. Walking around at a somewhat normal pace in the game most of the time thanks to "Controller Walk Run Toggle" (speed configured with Autorun) means travel takes long enough that even the relatively mild effect of cold that's the default in Sunhelm becomes significant. It's not seemingly instant like some versions of survival mode, more like you've actually been outside for enough time that it makes sense you'd be feeling the cold.

My Skyrim time scale is set so there's still enough time to travel pretty far in a day but at one point it was getting dark and I had to think for a moment about how to stay warm that night. Just then the lights at the inn came into view. It felt a lot like it does irl when you're walking in the woods, it's a little longer than expected to get home, and it's getting dark. P

Oh damn, THAT was the problem with SPID 7.2RC1? I'm okay with that. I'm not one to uninstall things and not expect problems. According to tonight's test results that's the version that successfully distributes outfits that get equipped (unlike the previous version) and doesn't crash (unlike the newer RC builds.) It appears that sometime in the past few days, posts from people I've followed have stopped showing up in the feed. The latest from pluralistic @ mamot.fr for instance is not there right now. He's not blocked me, I can see it if I go to his profile. All that shows up is stuff posted to hashtags that I follow.

The TL/DR is this: The allegation that David Pugliese is a Russian asset has floated around Ottawa for about a decade — often with various degrees of evidence behind it. It was in recent years that these documents, which appear to be real and which were furnished by Kyiv, were sent to Canadian intelligence agencies and were seriously investigated. While Pugliese has proved himself to be a willing customer for Russian disinformation, and while I believe he hasn’t appropriately disclosed his relationship with the Russian embassy, the idea that he is a paid agent of the Russian government is probably false.

But recent Kremlin influence operations have blurred the lines between asset and useful idiot. They invite us to, as I said repeatedly during my statement at committee, get serious.

As opposed to Bill C-63, which pushes [age verification bullshit] far into the future and behind closed doors through an opaque regulatory process, our new Conservative legislation will directly legislate [age verification bullshit] that online operators must adhere to.
