  • Expedition 20: Breach, Tips?

  • Yeah, this one didn't feel too tedious. There were a couple things that slowed me down, but nothing terrible.

    The rewards are pretty cool. I can already see all of the "Where did you get those corvette parts?" posts from new players.

  • I just finished the expedition last night. Aside from distracting myself with corvette building, there were a couple things I ran into that delayed me getting done sooner.

    • Finding an Infested Planet - While the Vile Brood can be found on several planets along the way, Infested planets are a lot less obvious. In fact, there may only be one in the expedition and it's Giumf VII in the Rendezvous 3 system. "Infested" isn't even in the description. I believe it says something like "Boiling Doom."
    • Spacewalking for Lost in Time - There is a spacewalk in each Phase of the expedition. 1) If you don't turn off Multiplayer there is a good chance you will be flung away from location the moment you step out of your ship and have to fly back, likely to be flung away again. 2) After you scavenge the corvette parts from the wreckage, grab the log that is floating nearby. That is what ends the mission.
    • Underwater Exploration - Later in the expedition there will be a handful of underwater tasks including deploying a Nautilon, reaching a certain depth, etc. Constructing the Nautilon Chamber requires Magnitised Ferrite, which can be tedious to refine all the way from Ferrite Dust. Early in the expedition there are planets with Magntised Ferrite deposits. Unfortunately you will also need other underwater resources like Salt, Crystal Sulphide, and Living Pearls for the various underwater upgrades and there's no easy way to get those outside of grinding.
    • Adopting an Anomalous Floating Companion - These can only be found in Purple systems and not every planet has flying animals that count. There are a couple in the Rendezvous 5 system on Gashi 69/B4 and Umazuno-Sosy, but I know other people found some in earlier Purple systems.
    • Prerequisites - While you can do some missions out of order, like collecting Storm Crystals, others have prerequisites that are rewarded from earlier missions. Some of those can be easy to bypass, like exploring a derelict freighter without an Emergency Scanner. There are some systems which seem to have derelict freighter scattered around on which you can just land without needing a scanner first.

  • My original, Normal save has been maxed out for ages. It got to the point I had to delete entire bases because I had hit, not the base part limit, but the save part limit. I literally couldn't place anything else. So while I go back to that save once a while, there's not much for me to do.

    My attachment to an Expedition save varies. I've had some I played a lot afterwards and some I couldn't be bothered. Those were the first to get deleted when I ran out of slots. Some of the early expedition routes are ghost towns of bases, like Pioneers, which was the first expedition. Some of the newer ones are still pretty active though, like Utopia and Aquarius. If I load either of those saves, there are still people traversing the systems.

    It's funny though that some expeditions did not seem to capture people, like The Cursed. I never see anyone if I load that save. Could just be timing or it could be people just didn't enjoy that expedition enough to stick around.

    If you're kinda looking for a reason to play, you can always set yourself a mission. I took one of my expedition saves, Polestar I think, and turned a system into a Status Device farm, which requires the system to have the right kind of planets and building one base on each planet so they can all be uploaded.

  • I really wasn't a part of the early NMS hate and didn't start playing in earnest until a couple major updates were released. Since then, it's been a game I come back to every so often. I've played through every expedition with a new save, though I have had to start deleting saves to make room for more. I treat each save as their own character with their own color scheme for ships, bases, and appearance. After the expedition is over, I often spend some time building bases, etc. before moving on to a new game for a while.

    Going through my various saves and building different styles of corvettes has been fun. I've only done one particular large build that ran into the corvette part limit (I hit the base part limit all the time). I actually like making fairly practical, compact corvettes.

  • On the landing bays, there is a lever and a button. The lever opens the hatch. The button will beam you down to the surface if you are stopped. It's also the button that beams onto Freighters when you're parked at one.

  • Yeah, I would like to see buildable corvette landing pads for bases at least. It would be nice if Trading Posts, Settlements, etc. also got them.

    Honestly, I've taken a break from ship building at the moment because I've run into a handful of bugs with the parts in my inventory, e.g. the same parts no longer stacking, parts not showing up in the builder, etc. Hopefully these will get resolved soon.

  • Honestly, I think the mechanisms in NMS and Starfield are both serviceable but not perfect.

    What's funny is I was literally about to reinstall Starfield because I haven't played the latest update and was in the mood to play around with the ship building again. Then this NMS update came out...

  • Now it sounds like the expedition may not start until Wednesday so they can tackle some bugs first. I'd say just keep an eye out for it.

  • The Corvette Expedition doesn't start until Friday but you can build and hunt for Corvette parts now. The expedition just gets you some exclusive rewards and is going to center around the new building mechanic.

  • I think that's a fair assessment. NMS's gameplay is broad, not deep whereas something like Starfield is deep, not broad. If you don't like the sandbox parts of the game, like base building, I can understand why it's not your favorite. That being said, I think it's worth revisiting from time to time to check out the new features and expeditions.

    I've played every expedition and will usually play that save for a little bit after the expedition is over, building bases, maxing out my freighter, etc. Then I move on to another game until the next major update or expedition. Overall it's a fairly chill game and the community is nice.
