  • Call it the Trump Tax. That's what my friend changed "Tariffs Contingency Fee" to on all his proposals.

If someone threatens you, you can always fall back on "it's the Trump Tax and it'll make us STRONGER!"

  • People always talk about how emotional the cover is...

    1. That's just the warbly singing voice of an old man
    2. HAVE YOU HEARD THE ORIGINAL??? Talk about emotion. It's not even a contest
  • The way you animated in each panel does something that neither a still page nor a "series" of animations could achieve.

Any time I've read a comic, I have to consciously slow down because I've found myself jumping between dialogue boxes too fast and not appreciating each panel. This completely solves that problem

  • Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt doesn't deserve the praise it gets. If anyone else recorded it, no one would care. His singing sounds bad.

And to add to it, it's a song about drug addiction and depression....but the music video is a highlight real of how awesome Cash's life was.

  • I've been off the superhero train since before End Game but these Fantastic Four trailers are really doing it got me. It feels a lot more "grounded" and I like the setting/aesthetic a lot.

Can't believe I'm saying it but I might go see a Marvel movie

  • No, she never did anything particularly shitty. As far as rich people go, she's really not all that bad.. She is just an incredibly bland celebrity that is seemingly everywhere still.

I feel the same way about Jimmy Fallon. So tired of seeing both of them

  • Nah, Taylor Swift keeps putting out hits that her fans love. Katy Perry fell off YEARS ago and has been desperately clinging to relevancy. She filled a very specific niche of music in her hayday that no longer really exists

Her public personality comes off as very.......shallow. She can sing and has, uh, some desirable assets but she's very much a product of record industry more than just a participant. So in a way she represents a lot of what is wrong with the industry and people don't like that

Anyway, I feel kind of bad dunking on her like that. I don't hate her or anything, just wanted to explain why she's disliked.

  • I think it's just an old picture as there's some other missing roads and buildings in the area. Doesn't look censored

CECOT was built in 2022 and from what I'm reading, Bing's map data is usually like 5 years out of date. I followed a guide on getting the metadata (that includes capture date) but it wasn't on there and I didn't feel like seeing up a Bing account to use the API so it'll have to remain a mystery for now

  • I can't claim to know the manufacturing but this sounds just like the "The production of EV batteries is worse for the environment than burning fossil fuels" argument that ignores the fact that batteries are reusable

  • I had a friend who rented a storefront. For 5 years, the "store" had a ladder, a bucket of paint, and a picture of the Pope. He lived in the back in a gigantic barely-converted "studio" space.

Interesting guy. I think he's clean now.

    Going into the office today

I have a "flexible" WFH schedule which means I'm almost always working from home. Today, I've been lured in with an NDA breakfast with a manufacturer.

So you know what that means: 1 hour of "yum I love breakfast sandwiches" followed by 6 hours of "why did I think that would be worth the drive?"

Is there a way to locally archive an entire Twitter account, replies included?

My friends and I were active Twitter users up until it got sold and the only reason my account isn't deleted already is because I have a LOT of memories there.

I looked into downloading the tweets.js archive but that seems to be only what I wrote, not the original tweet if it's a reply. Having the full conversations that led to in-jokes is what I'm after!

I understand why this would be very complicated and to add to that, half of our profiles are set to private so The Way Back Machine and other public services won't work. Media would be nice but it's not a requirement.

    Does something like this exist?

I have a system for squeegeeing the glass after a shower

The bolts for the handle prevent going from top to bottom in one motion across the whole door so I had to adapt. Over time, I've become pretty good at removing all the water to prevent streaks when it dries even on the sleepiest of mornings.

    Gaslit about beans

I saw a post referencing Lemmy's "obsession with beans" and it made me think of this.

Despite narwhals and bacon becoming something you say sarcastically to make fun of redditors for the past 10+ years, some users here tried to make "beans" the Lemmy equivalent and for a week or two, half the posts here were about beans....then it thankfully stopped.

Since then I've seen a handful of bean references but a significantly larger amount of references to bean references.

Beans were a blip in the Lemmy timeline and i's like gaslit us into thinking Lemmy is actually obsessed with beans. The posts/comments get upvoted but...where are the beans?

Just thought that was kinda funny.

Struggling to remember the name of a British actor/comedian(?) who was once featured in a music video. Help me out?

Today I was reading about a band I hadn't heard of (Republic of Loose) and thought the singer looked like someone I had seen in a music video for another band.

In this video, the actor in question is laying on his back with the ocean under him (as if filmed off the edge of a ship). I believe it was made recently.

    This is Mick (Mik?) Pyro:

He doesn't totally look like the guy I'm trying to find but close enough to make me remember the video.

It is NOT Matt Berry. The actor I'm thinking of has short hair.

This is really stupid but when I first saw the video, I thought it was the guy from that old Hugh Mungus video:

What is the name of this actor?? It's driving me crazy!

Not a fan of this week's affix

I didn't mind it last time we had this one because I was still doing baby dunfeons but boy do I hate it now. Ran a couple keys last night and the affix fucked us at least once per run. Besides the obvious bugs like orbs getting stuck in unreachable locations (on the ship in dawnbreaker, between the walkways in grim batol), we also had orbs spawn during Speaker Dorlita's Blazing Crescendo in Stonevault both times we ran it.

I thought last week's was the worst because the add spawned at the end of so many fights but I think I hate this one more.

Let's say you just won the lottery (in the US). What is the smartest way to give money to your friends?

I don't know why stuff like this keeps me up at night but let's pretend you just won some obscene amount and there's a lot of people you'd like to set up for life. Let's say after taxes you have $300m in your account

You can give someone up to 18k a year without incurring a gift tax and while that'd definitely be a nice bump to their income, you still have way more money than you know what to do with. So what's the smartest way to hook them up?

A couple of options I've considered are:

    1. Give them a lump sum of $X million. They eat the taxes the first year and handle the savings themselves.
    2. Create a company and hire them to "work" one hour a month for a big salary. If you put $25m in an account, the interest covers the salary. They get a steady bonus income with the added bonus of getting the best insurance available. Is that legal?
    3. Set up a "shared" checking account they can use to pay for...whatever. But would these expenses count towards the gift tax? I do not know.

Can you add the option to condense spoiler warnings into one line?

The MediaBiasFactChecker bot leaves comments that I like to see so I don't want to block it....but it's designed for how the browser version of Lemmy handles spoilers. It says "(click to view the whole report)" which expands the multiline comment.

On Connect, the entire spoiler section shows up (but blacked out, of course).

Honestly I prefer the way Connect handles it now but I don't expect the bot maker to change their formatting to cater to just one app so an option for it would be awesome

Did the new update break Card view for posts?

There used to be rounded rectangles around each post, now there's nothing separating it from the following post. I tried changing the colors and it's still gone.

Full Width had a bar between them so I'll use that for now...but I kind of miss the Card view showing cards

Is anyone else getting a replies to years-old comments on reddit?

I don't browse reddit anymore but when searching for solutions to various problems, many times I end up on a reddit thread with the answers. I haven't posted or commented since the exodus but I almost always have a red notification icon. And every time curiosity gets the better of me and I click it, it's a reply to a comment I left years ago.

I usually mark it as read and ignore it but last night curiosity got the better of me and I looked at the user's profile....lots of comments, all on ancient posts.

If they're bots, I'm actually kind of impressed. They'd be good and relevant comments if they were posted when the thread was active. I searched for some of the unique replies and the only result was the comment in question so it's not just copying replies. I just checked again while posting this and have a new reply - a question about a game tip I posted.

So is it someone farming 1 comment at a time or a sophisticated LLM? I'm leaning the latter but like I said.... it's an impres

New player looking for advice on choosing a support class (Pathfinder 2e)

    Hello everyone,

We are nearing the end of my first TTRPG campaign and in a few weeks, the DM is starting a homebrew. I joined this one half way through and a friend slapped together most of my level 7 character for me, a basic fighter. For this new campaign I'm hoping to have "more to do" in and out of battle so I'm looking for class advice.

I want to play a support class but I've been feeling overwhelmed by the class options. All I know is that I want it to be beginner-friendly support that can heal but also do more - like damage, buffs, or debuffs. Doesn't have to be all 3!

The group gave me a few suggestions but there was so much back and forth about how complicated they are, I thought I'd pose the question here.

Can someone help point me in the right direction on a simple support? Any help would be appreciated!

How many communities do you have blocked?

My preferred way to browse here is using All and blocking communities I don't want to see. That way I get exposed to new things I wouldn't seek out on my own (for example: British archaeology)

I accidentally blocked a community while trying to block a user and when I went to unblock it, I saw I had 1250 communities filtered. If I had to guess, 90% are either porn, sports, or anime.

    What about you?

Subset Games created two amazing games: FTL & Into The Breach

I'm not sure if this counts as a "patient gamer" because I played them to death years ago...but I've been playing both again recently and they're just perfect little games with a ton of replayability. They're not retro (FTL 2012, ITB 2018) but they're old enough to regularly go on sale which is great!

Highly recommended if you like roguelite strategy games.

If you have any similar games to suggest, please leave a comment. I'm sure there's tons of great strategy games I've missed over the years

I was messing around on Bing trying to generate animals camouflaging into various environments but never spit out what I had in mind. It did, however, expose me to furry porn despite my prompt not requesting it.
