I once had a QA engineer file a bug saying they couldn't do negative testing since negative numbers were converted to positive.
The function took an unsigned integer. Took a lot of explaining to get them to understand that negative testing isn't necessarily negative numbers.
This could have easily been a Flintstones episode.
May I see it?
Dead internet theory.. except it's basically dead world theory.
If ya want to not be plugged into the internet, or use new external media, ya can probably run it safely forever.
Bad eh security advice: use an alternative ssh port. Lots of actors try port 22 and other common alternatives. Much fewer will do a full port scan looking for an ssh server then try brute forcing.
Lucky for me, my mom doesn't know what the windows key is.
I try to use peeps or folks to be safe.
Uh
Also money. If it was all free to get the paper online, who would pay to get it in person?
For some reason a collective of cats sounds like some sort of organized crime group that wears suits.
My cat doesn't wear a suit, though probably partakes in organized crime. 🤔
What's the start button? Every time I say click: they don't know if it's left or right.
Bottom left made me miss Kmart
My home server has been running on a i7 960 with an Intel motherboard for many many years now.
I have both but just use pihole as a local DNS server/forwarder. I bump into too many random times where sites or redirects don't work properly since they get blocked.
Where's the I did that stickers and artificial blame?
Why does that only go one way?
Consider using containers. I used to think this way, though now my goal is to get down to almost all containers since it's nice to be able to spin up and down just what the one 'thing' needs.
I figure maybe towards the end of my lifetime laws will catch up to allow some form of real digital ownership. Until then: you lose it when they go out.
Errghhh ooo oo uh uh oh uh uh.
Dial up
99/100 people will not care. I'm one of them.
For that 1/100: sure it's infuriating but probably more than mildly.
Some posts don't load
At first I thought it was a federation issue of some sort but then realized voyager was working fine.
I can't load: https://sh.itjust.works/post/31973594 via Sync. No idea why.
Sync is my favorite Lemmy app, but come on can we at least get some bug fixes once in a while?
That was a great 17 minute wait

This video was a lot of fun to watch. It's a simple enough concept that kept me entertained throughout.
Is there a way to have a less depressing Lemmy experience?
It seems like no matter how I scroll I find bad news. I know lots of things are happening but I just want funny memes and interesting stories.
I used to be able to get this back in the day on the Reddit app feed, but here the all page is always just depressing stuff. Back then, there was news and stuff but like it felt more balanced in the all feed. I could get bad stuff but lots of interesting stuff too .
I find myself engaging less and less and just avoiding Lemmy more and more since I know the moment I open it I'll get whacked with more depressing stuffs.
I don't want politics or world news or really even memes about that stuff anymore. Heck even tech news is depressing. I just want simple scrolling of fun content. Idk it's just hard to describe.
Does anyone else feel this way about their Lemmy experience?
I remember an old post about someone getting AM radio from their sink (probably from Reddit back in the day). That type of stuff is so much cooler than my feed.
To that end
Weird PETG Printing Behavior
Discover the magic of the internet at Imgur, a community powered entertainment destination. Lift your spirits with funny jokes, trending memes, entertaining gifs, inspiring stories, viral videos, and so much more from users.
Hey folks,
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm printing PETG (https://kingroon.com/collections/petg-filament?) on my Neptune 3 Plus. It's sort of like it starts (almost) ok, sticks to the plate just fine, then a few layers up it seems to almost have inconsistent extrusion (or maybe even trouble pulling the filament?) leading to holes, etc. till the model just falls apart. See linked photos for about where I give up each time.
I'm printing with Cura and 240C printing, 90C on the build plate. 45mm/s (I've gone down from 60mm/s). Retraction on, no z-hop. 60% fan, though I've tried it with 20% and 100% fan as well.
The filament is in a dryer at 55C. Funny enough I printed basically perfectly (without drying, straight out of the bag) with default settings the first time I printed. The second time and on, have had this problem... and have had it in the dryer.
Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Edit: In case its useful, I'm printing this piece: https://file.io/D9jxYq4KOrL
Is it wrong to report email as spam when you previously opted out and they either add a new subscription/newsletter, etc.?
For example, I opt out of all emails from a website. A year later they make a new newsletter and auto subscribe all to it.
I login, hit unsubscribe, then report as spam in my email client.
I figure auto adding me is more/less spamming me. Do y'all agree?
Why does the US government subsidize the building of EV chargers?
Funding opportunity from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s electric vehicle charging programs builds on the Biden-Harris Administration’s work to expand EV charging infrastructure in communities nationwide.
At one point I thought that if the Government was giving money for EV chargers, they would be either at-cost or free to use.
One of the first built was at a Flying J truck stop in Ohio.
I looked on plug share and found one in Hubbard, OH and it's 67c per kwh (https://www.plugshare.com/location/582660). The average cost of electricity in that area is less than 15c per kwh. At that kind of price, gas could be a cheaper option.
Why does the government subsidize in a way where already wealthy companies get public money to build chargers, and make a ton more money off the rest of us?
(This is not a political statement at all. I just don't understand why public money goes to make certain private folks more wealthy. I figure I must be missing something).
Thanks for your thoughts!
Back animation not working

How to get wood sealant off of a window
So I was using a wood sealer (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AQTX3XU) on my newly built catio. Unfortunately I didn't notice how much I had sprayed on the adjacent window.
Now I have cloudy/foggy windows (https://imgur.com/a/TKD9wim). I've tried cleaning them with:- - - -
Any ideas for what might get this stuff off easily?---
I'd consider buying a Fisker car if the software/firmware was open source
I wouldn't be as worried about them going out of business and me being stuck with half broken car software.
Fidelity and passwords via T9
Anyone here use fidelity (https://www.fidelity.com/)? I had to call to get something done with my account and thought it was weird that they have you (more/less) T9 dial your password into the system, though its not real T9 in that (for example) one press of 2 would mean either a,A,b,B,c,C,2. They say for special characters just give a * sign.
Any thoughts on if that is safe on their part? It seems weird to me since they either need the password in plaintext on their end or I guess the hash of the T9 version of the password which would be less secure anyways because of: all one case and only one type of 'special character'.
And yes: before you ask this was 100% the actual fidelity phone number: +1 800-343-3548
In their defense they did ask for other verification information once I got a person, but still felt really weird.
Any thoughts on the security of this mechanism?
Mlmym instance?
Hey folks,
Is it possible to have a mlmym endpoint for sh.itjust.works? Maybe old.sh.itjust.works?
I know the lemmy ui has come a decent ways.. but sometimes I just want to look at it like old reddit.
lemmy.world has one: https://old.lemmy.world/
If not: no big deal. if so: would be cool.
Looking for a keyboard
It's a sad day: My previous mechanical keyboard more/less died. Multiple keys just stopped working and even upon replacing them with new switches: still dead.
So anyways I'm looking for a keyboard with some specific features:
Anyone know of one that is:
I know its asking a bunch, but hey if someone has seen one of these, or has ideas: let me know.
Budget: idk, but I'd be willing to pay probably $200 ish if it was a perfect match and seemed legit.
Thanks in advance
App with REST Server for device info?
Hey folks,
Does anyone know of an app (FOSS or otherwise) that has a built-in REST-server to get current device info?
I'd like to be able to hit the API from within my local network to get info including:
Why?
I have an old Android device that sits in the closet as a Syncthing node. It does some other random stuff too. I don't really want to have to get up and look at it to find out certain information. I already have a VNC server running on it. I even have a (sketchy) SSH server on it that I currently call df -h
on to programmatically get free space info. The SSH server has some weirdness where it seems to stop working after some time, among other oddities. Also it can't get battery level afaict.
I imagine this is possible using ADB, but I don't really want to have to always leave the device in wireless ADB mode or manually put it in that mode each time; unless that is easier than I think.
Thanks!
How do i fix this ugly hole in the wall?
An electrician 'fixed' an issue by making this hole in a basement cinder block wall.
.. how do I put that box back in or fix the wall or something?
Inside the box are two capped (hot) wires.
The pipe seems to be copper. Doesn't bend or anything. It can't (at least easily) be pushed back in.
I had wanted to use cement paste.. but like what do I do about the box? I guess I could paste everything except the metal pipe but geez: then i still have this sketchy box hanging out.

Archive all old Android/Google Messages?
Does anyone know of a way to archive all messages in Android/Google Messages maybe older than a certain timeframe?
I have 100s of old conversations spanning back several years. I finally decided it would be nice to archive (not delete) ones that aren't relevant at the moment. The only way I figured to do this is swipe each conversation one by one.
Is there a faster way to just do it all in one swoop?
Edit: I wrote a quick script to do it via manipulating the Google Messages webui: https://sh.itjust.works/comment/4646349 Worked for me!
Octoprint bed leveling (Neptune 3 Plus)
Hey folks,
Anyone have the gcode to do bed leveling and then emit the info back for the octoprint bed level visualizer?
I have an Elegoo Neptune 3 Plus.
I tried the bilevel one on the GitHub page but it seems to make my printer get stuck at home after running.
Edit: it almost seems like when it finishes it just gets stuck in the center with the extruder heat still on. Usually I have to reboot the printer to get it up again. Sort of like it wants me to go check the z offset.

How do you handle secrets in home automation?
Say you have a script or something that gets run in cron/task scheduler and it needs a password.. say to ssh to a raspberry pi elsewhere in your house.
How do you save that password in a way that automation can access it?
Some ideas:
If the secrets manager is easily available, the secret to get into the secrets manager is available as well leading to a feeling of security by obscurity.
If someone breaks into my system via SSH/etc. then they can get the passwords either way.
.. How do
