  • I don't like how he seems to quote (positively) Noam Chosmky so much. By the end of the article, it ceases to be fact-based and becomes more opinionated.

He makes a few points that I disagree with, namely: "the whole educational and professional training system is a very elaborate filter, which just weeds out people who are too independent and who think for themselves and who don't know how to be submissive and so on - because they're dysfunctional to the institutions" (This is from a Chomsky's book). I 100% disagree with this. I just don't see people creating an educational system that filters out good thinkers and smart people. If it does, it is surely failing. (I am in Europe). Ask any teacher what sort of training they received to filter out those people. They will tell you none. Ask any teacher what is the reason that one fails in the educational system. Not one teacher will tell you "oh, that person is too smart, too independent, for our current educational system. He needs to be dumber if he wishes to pass.". Come on...

I wish he would have kept the document fact based. This is surely an attacking point that may be used to detract the rest of it.

  • Where are the guides on how to facilitate mass migration? Where are the guides for agriculture in the absence of international supply lines and fertilizer? Where are the checklists of supplies for individuals, small communities, and large communities?

I don't know? Where are they? Post them. Create them.

If all you have to say of the 57 pages of the document is "the title is wrong": Thank you for your contribution.

  • Most of it are graphs. I don't think it takes that long to read. But even if it does, it should be read. Read it over a week, or two, or however long. Instead of doomscrolling, doomread. At least you are not giving money to pedophiles by reading this.

  • What?

I don't think you know what centralization/decentralization means.

On matrix, you scan spin up a server/instance and communicate with any other matrix server/instance. On Fluxer, if you self-host, and your friend also self-hosts, your instance/server cannot communicate with your friend's instance/server. You would have to create an account on your friend's instance/server and vice-versa. You would also, probably, have to be running two clients in order to chat in both servers/instances.

  • Do you think a hand coffee grinder (I would buy the kingrinder k6, as I want cheap) is a "buy for life" product? I never had one in my hand, but I would think that anything that "grinds" probably gets blunt in a few years, no?

  • I tried movim for like 2 minutes. It was too much. It felt more like a full social network (chat+mastodon in one?) than just a chat software. I didn't like that. Too convoluted and complex. And the UI/UX was confusing.

I really want XMPP to do well though.

  • Greta is honestly one of my heroes. The amount of hate that she got growing up, from right wing pedophiles(-protectors) is astonishing. And she persevered! All she did was point to the climate science. She tried to improve the world for both everyone alive and those yet to come. And she got hate for it.

Whenever a person tells me that they don't like Greta, I know that I won't like that person.

  • Another word for "marketing" or "advertisement" is Manipulation. Shady, manipulative, tactics.

Fuck them. I love Lemmy because it seems like the ratio of like-minded people is much larger here. Nothing better than seeing other principled people that would rather give up some comforts than deal with ads and bend the knee to the pieces of shit that try to push them.

Even products in the supermarket (such as bread!!) come with ads in the fucking plastic wrapper. I have changed my bread brand due to this. I will absolutely give up any comfort to avoid your manipulation. I will fucking shower in cold water if it means I don't bend the knee to pieces of shit.

  • What the fuck.

  • This should serve as motivation to move away from any and all corporations. Do not lose your community. Find a proper free-libre-open-source alternative and move the community there. Communities are important. Corporations are not.

  • Slightly Off-Topic:

I never liked Discord. First and foremost, nowadays, I cannot log into it when I am using a VPN. And back when I could, it always felt so laggy and clunky.

I think todays society is not used to performant software. Everyone just buys a new computer/smartphone every year or every 2 years or so, so they probably have compute power to run whatsoever. I run old shit. 13 year old desktops or so, with no dedicated graphics card, old smartphones, etc. I need software to be performant.

  • Using the QR code is probably still using Mastercard/Visa, no? As long as the money is being transfered directly from your bank account, it should be going throw Visa/Mastercard. Or am I mistaken?

  • Agreed. I will never understand how these people got famous. I do understand that they are manipulative and all that, but still... For manipulative people to be successful, one needs to be manipulated. I think this says more about the manipulated (and society overall) than it does about these manipulative, stupid, pieces of shit.

We will always have unscrupulous pieces of shit. The fact that society is choosing to make these people famous, and "powerful", is dystopian. Absolutely pathetic.

  • I am not sure if you are aware, but there is a "fandom wiki" dictionary maker: https://github.com/Runik-3/core. I have used it in the past and it works perfectly.

  • Oh, both of those (street complete and every door) are great! I have just answered a few questions. This is a really easy way to improve OSM. We should probably do a "You Should Know" somewhere. I don't think these apps are well known.

How long until the changes are accepted, do you have any idea? I already published them (by logging in my OSM account).

  • Hey! That is great!

What sort of apps/software do you use to update OpenStreetMap? I would also love to do something like that. Can you do a brief explanation on how you do it, please?

  • Giving up those socials is a great start, and often times the start is the hardest part. I don't see Instagram though. Hopefully you have quit them and just forgot to mention, if not, consider this the universe sending you a message motivating you to delete it!

Of all the "content provider websites", youtube is certainly the hardest part to "cut". However, the signal to noise ratio of youtube is so low (small signal, large noise) that I pretty much don't use it anymore. Even good channels are, more and more, going for clickbait and shitty tactics, and AI content. I didn't really actively cut youtube, but I did so passively. It just became worse and worse that I don't feel drawn to it as often. And, of course, when I do use youtube, ads are blocked with ublock and SponsorBlock.

  • Oh, this is something I don't do, but probably should. Though I do small grocery shopping, several times, as opposed to one big one, and I do self checkout. It is so much faster to just pay with the card. It never really crossed my mind to do otherwise. I think paying with cash deserves a try though!

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

Are you doing something to fuck over "the powerful"? If so, what?
