  • So here's the thing, we are fundamentally on the same side of this divide.

    I'm anticapitalist, anti-corporate, liberal left.

And yet here we are shouting at each other.

Interestingly we are also the same generation.

    Admittedly, from two different continents.

But I believe we want the same thing.

What we are arguing about is how we achieve that.

I don't believe in generalisation. I'm not sure that it helps when facing the problems we both face. I don't thinkblumping people in as a whole is an effective way to make allies across divides.

For me, this includes Americans. Many people I know think all Americans are crass, shallow capitalists who support a reigime that colonises through oppressive power and cultural dominance.

But if I believe that, then I believe you are part of that.

I don't want to believe that. I want to believe that you care to make a change and that being part of a whole that doesn't represent you doesn't stop you from resisting it.

You are not my enemy, despite being part of a thing we see as the enemy.

So here I am, calling a truce. I'm calling time on our disagreement and trying to show you that I mean what I say.

In return I want you to think about how you see boomers, or any generation though. They are not your enemy. They are just the definition of your enemy.

  • That's such a massive generalisation it is comical.

Even if that were true for America, it still isn't true on a global scale.

I mean, do you think everyone of your generation is the same and has the same values? I'm genuinely interested in that.

  • But saying All Boomers did this is the way forward. You are a nuanced progressive, and I wish you well on fixing things from this perspective. Good luck soldier.

  • Ah, I get it, you just like to make massive assumptions and throw insults.

OK, on your way little troll.

  • Boomers. Yes all people born between those years are completely the same. From wall street to the punks, to the folk that marched at Selma. From the poor and disenfranchised to the rich and wealthy. To those of the north and those from the south.

People who were born in america then are the same as people who immigrated. Just because they were born in the same time span.

Those who were exploited by the military industrial complex are the same as those who profited from it? Right? That's what you are saying. That they are all equally responsible because they grew up in the same era.

Its a lazy construct that allows people to feel like they can blame indiscriminately without taking responsibility and agency.

A gross generalisation of people based on nothing but a common timeframe that erases their struggles and their successes.

It should be class war but you fell for the lie of generational war.

    Be better.

  • So, black folk of that generation are the same as white folk of that generation? So trans folk of that generation are the same as the rich white politicians of that generation?

See how stupid that all sounds?

    That's you that is.

Also when you call me you... I'm not even American you vapid hoser. I didn't vote any of your shit show in, and yet we still all have to live with it. In a way you are more responsible for all of those things than I'll ever be.

    • unless what you've written is an intentional parody, in which case, that's brilliant work.
  • Generation wars are just like fighting over astrological signs.

Damn Aries bought all the candy from the store leaving none for the rest of us.

  • My bad then.

  • Classic American.

Assumes every country is like America. Assumes their laws are everyone's laws. Assumes their rights are everyone's rights.

Doesn't bother to check. Doesn't look to see if anyone else is carrying a weapon to the beach.

  • Did you edit your comment so that mine doesn't make sense?

    That's skeevy.

  • You an I... We are either going to form an unstoppable super team or... You ate going to end up as my nemesis.

  • No, not at all. In fact I am pretty good at being able to stay awake for rather long periods of time. I can comfortably go 48 hours without sleep.

If I could donate it I would happily do so.

  • You write essays at your job?

  • I can fall asleep, near instantly, at will.

I call it my time machine function.

  • It is. And in the Independent newspaper which has editors that should have spotted a clanger like that.

  • Good for you buddy.

Edit: sorry that was harsh. I'm just dealing with "every comment is a contrarian comment" day.

Sure, GPT is good at basic search functionality for obvious things, but why choose that when there are infinitely better and more reliable sources of information?

There's a false sense of security couple to a notion of "asking" an entity.

Why not engage in a community that can support answers? I've found the Linux community (in general) to be really supportive and asking questions is one way of becoming part of that community.

The forums of the older internet were great at this... Creating community out of commonality. Plus, they were largely self correcting I'm a way in which LLMs are not.

So not only are folk being fed gibberish, it is robbing them of the potential to connect with similar humans.

And sure, it works for some cases, but they seem to be suboptimal, infrequent or very basic.

  • Now, that would be more interesting and accurate.

  • Yeah, it is a financial success, but so was the emoji movie... Not sure that qualifies it as "culturally renowned".

Conflating those ideas that money equals cultural impact is what leads us to an endless cycle of sequels and reboots that most people watch once and then forget.

  • Classic independent reporting "the movie whose cultural impact is renowned".

Is it? There's no proof that the movie is having a renowned cultural impact above any others and the link on their own site for that quote is talking, not about the movie, but Minecraft as a whole.

    A DANGEROUS THING

We made this during the first Trump presidency. It seems pretty pertinent now too.

    I miss text-based tutorials

When I use the internet to learn, I don't want to have to spend 2 minutes watching an advert, then try to decipher an accent I can barely understand whilst a 15 year old speed runs the task whilst seemingly skipping crucial steps in a video.

I want the steps written down. Maybe with diagrams.

I'm old. Learning is hard enough.

    another modernist synth experiment

I'm calling this 'West Coast Main Line' after the section of rail that passes through where I live.

Again, I'm using the Pro-1, a Volca Keys and an Uno Synth. This time a Model:Samples is playing a looped section.

I'm looking here about recreating the rhythm of rail using a phasing technique.

There's a bandcamp version too, where the track is free to download, if you prefer.

As before, please feel free to share any of your experiments too.

Lost at Sea - a modest modernist symphony with monosynths

    Hello!

I though you might like the more nerdier details about this track.

The equipment is a Pro-1, an Uno Synth and a Volca Keys (set to octave). All running through a Behringer xenyx and recorded on a tascam dp 006.

I used an Sq-64 for the sequencing, which was a steep learning curve but I think it came out ok.

In terms of the music I was particularly interested in timbrality changes and phasing as well as emergent patterns. I'd planned for the piece to be around an hour long, but it came to a natural conclusion at the 21 minute mark and I went with that.

There's also a version on YouTube here, where I used the recorded midi output to create an animation. It was a bit of an afterthought, but I think it might make some great and complex visuals down the line as a technique.

Ok, thank you for your time.

Lost at Sea - A Modernist Music Piece for Three Analogue Synths

Long time listener, first time caller.

My first post to Lemmy is a piece of modernist music I've made for three synthesizers.

In this case, I used a Behringer Pro-1, an Uno Synth, and a Volca Keys.

I'm very much interested in repetition and emergent rhythms. Feel free to share some of your own work if you think I'd be into it.
