I just want you to know,

I'm woke Palpatine now. I'm doin' midichondrial prefigurative politics.

I'm organizing my community via the Emperor Palpatine Surgical Reconstruction Center.

I've literally mastered the means of production via Exegollian juche.

What are you doing? Yeah, that's what I predicted you'd say with my force powers. Don't bother admitting me to this forum, I've already perfectly simulated it with my force powers.

You ban me in 6 months for saying Alderaan was a comprador planet and deserved it with no counter-argument.

  • Also, does anyone know what's up with how so few of the Eva games have been fan-translated? It's like 3-4 of them out of like 10 serious ones that you'd think one of the biggest anime series would have fans who'd want to translate the stuff like they do other smaller series. We've never had a series game/VN released in English about Eva, either (not counting that one phone gacha thing).

  • It's not as if this is necessarily worse than other stuff that gets 7 back-to-back seasons of anime, but it's not boding well for the industry to need to endlessly turn to older stuff instead of making something whole-cloth new. Anno and Khara could probably do whatever they wanted since they likely have the funds and talent (or at least the industry cache to acquire talent) to do whatever they want. We could finally get Uru In Blue or something, but whatever. Maybe it'll be like Star Wars and we'll get an Andor out of it sometimes where people are forced to slip their desired art into the skin of these industry titans.

  • Yeah. Knew they wouldn't let it not continue. Too much money left in it. Really didn't like what the films did, but maybe a series will be better if they have an overall plan for the story (probably not).

  • By itself, no. When appropriated by a human, yes. It'd be like how people appropriate landscapes, ambient sounds, resampled art, etc. in their own work sometimes. (note: this is not a claim on whether using generated shit is actually good or useful to society or to art creation because a lot of the ai-art conversation assumes autuer theory and people as lonely individuals who wish to control or own the entire art process and can't imagine or afford to collaborate with another human).

Art is about the transmission of meaning (symbols, thoughts, feelings, etc.) from at least one person to another. This definition is rigid in actually defining the function of art, but not in what physical objects or acts in this world are art, which is the opposite of what non-marxist normies on the internet and in this thread want where they just want a taxonomy chart of what established things are art rather than analyzing the social relation/function of it.

  • Don't she/her Roger Ebert (his articles are what I was referring to).

  • explain marxist definitions f art that isn't yu just pulling more shit out of your ass

  • Art is a social function. This is not a Marxist demand, but arises from the very way in which art forms are defined. Only those things are recognised as art forms which have a conscious social function. The phantasies of a dreamer are not art. They only become art when they are given music, forms or words, when they are clothed in socially recognised symbols, and of course in the process there is a modification. The phantasies are modified by the social dress; the language as a whole acquires new associations and context. No chance sounds constitute music, but sounds selected from a socially recognised scale and played on socially developed instruments.

It is not for Marxism therefore to demand that art play a social function or to attack the conception of ‘art for art’s sake’, for art only is art, and recognisable as such, in so far as it plays a social function. What is of importance to art, Marxism and society is the question: What social function is art playing? This in turn depends on the type of society in which it is secreted. . . .But what is art as a social process? What is art, not as a mere art work or a means of earning a living, but in itself, the Part it plays in society? I have dealt fully with this point elsewhere, and need only briefly recapitulate now.

The personal phantasy or day-dream is not art, however beautiful. Nor is the beautiful sunset. Both. are only the raw material of art. It is the property of art that it makes mimic pictures of reality which we accept as illusory. We do not suppose the events of a novel really happen, that a landscape shown on a painting can be walked upon – yet it has a measure of reality.

  • I'm not broadening anything except my wide wife, if you know what I mean.

  • did you read the article

  • John Soccer invented Soccer. Deal with it.

  • I really recommend a Vita if you can afford it. Cheaper than 3DSes (for now) and can emulate a lot as well as native support for Vita and PSP and almost-sorta' PS1 via PSP/Adrenaline. Also handles bigger SD cards way better than PSP does (and 3DS to an extent).

  • did you read the article

  • The specific scenario was someone asking an animator, not even Anno, if the cross-shaped explosions that happen when the angels (apostles, more accurately in the japanese) are killed meant anything symbolic. Which they responded that no, they thought cross-shaped explosions looked cool. Obviously, the reason they even thought to use a cross shape in the first place is because it harmonizes with the rest of the show's imagery and themes.

Trachcan... is mostly correct about Anno saying that he chose Christianity since it was foreign to the audience and himself and he felt he could use names, symbols, etc. more freely with it without the cultural baggage he'd have if he went with something familiar. He purchased a book that was some middle-brow book analyzing Judaism/kabbalah or something and most of the names and info are seemingly from that. I can't find the link showing it, maybe it was in the Eva documentary with Anno.

Found this quote though: "As for the elements relating to Christianity, I just researched them quickly using dictionary-like books. Because these sort of convenient things exist in the world, (laughs) . . . They would only evaluate things on the basis of "catalog-like" elements. They didn't care about "interior" elements but were only caught up in what was on the surface. So, you can extend that [idea]. [In Eva] there are various "keyword-like" terms but, in truth, these are just symbols. They don't really have meanings taken individually. As they are mixed together, for the first time something like an interrelationship or a meaning emerges. If you investigate each one individually you will very quickly reach the bottom."

Which I think is probably the most accurate way to look at the show. He did a similar-ish thing with the Fredian/Jungian psychological aspects in the show as well when using a some book on mental illness, which I thought was a Japanese DSM4 book, but looking it up was probably this:

"When it came to Rei, I was completely blocked. I couldn’t write anything at all. I had intended to make Rei a schizophrenic (分裂症的) character6, but when I tried to write, I couldn’t think of anything - nothing at all. Finally, I thought, when writing madness, one has no choice but to become mad. At that time I consulted a bit with my friends. When I asked if there was something composed by a madman, I was loaned a “Bessatsu Takarajima”7 volume on mental illness. It was an “easy and reasonable” book [イージーでリーズナブルな本] (laughs), but inside it there was a poem written by a madman.8 That was extremely good. When I read the poem I had a strong impression, as though this was the first time that I had come close. I had a feeling like a light glinting upon the tip of a sharp knife. It was certainly not the feeling of an ordinary man. That was good. If I think about it now, this sort of ‘capacity’ was [already] within me (laughs). 9 It’s mad to believe that the writings of a madman are of the highest quality. I read that [poem] and was filled with images; I was able to write [Rei’s monologue] in one sitting.10"

  • Yeah, you've probably heard a lot of things on the internet and then just repeated them.

Edit: That's uncalled for. I apologize. I'm going to go explode in a cross-shaped explosion Angel-style (使徒, shito) and scream and stuff.

  • Did you read the article or both of his articles before commenting on this. Movies already had works like Metropolis 49 years after the first moving images were captured. Ebert's articles are written 56 years after Tennis For Two, the first rudimentary game. Somehow games are always going to be "a young medium."

  • lol, I have that interview ingrained in my mind too. The fucking bemusement they have about the idea that One Piece could actually mean anything more than "magical pirating would be cool, eh?".

I saw a clip of their shitty podcast recently where they do the same thing about Evangelion, being really, really gleeful to say there's no meaning to seemingly anything in Eva, or at least any of the religious symbolism it uses mixed with a lot of the rest of the themes it has.
