Economist Radhika Desai and Ben Norton discuss the neoliberal myth of "globalization", the contradictions of US hegemony, and the crisis of capitalism. This is part 1 in a series discussing Radhika's new book "Capitalism, Coronavirus, and War: A Geopolitical Economy". Other episodes in the series:...

Funny you say that because Unitedstatesian is actually the proper term in Spanish (estadounidense). Besides that, I've heard people say Americano/a or yanqui. I've never heard usaeño/a

It's a cultural thing for white people. Hell, I'd say that it's one of the only things that's truly white culture. When the word "art" gets used on something, it's basically the same as anointing it. Any and every drawing, sculpture, text, video, and song is "art" by default. And some take it further to define everything made by a person as "art" too. Even though it's vague as hell, it's a deadly serious topic.
I'm not saying that other cultures don't have similar ideas, but that it's weird the way that white people universally agree that protecting "art", whatever that is, is of the utmost importance.

Yeah! I don't know why the vaguest possible word caught on. Now it's just a formal way of saying "things." If you care so little about what you're creating that you can't even describe it, just call it what it is: slop. Ugh it's so frustrating how the most disinterested business jargon imaginable is the new normal. It's one thing for shareholders to describe their cash cows as "stuff makers" because of course they would. But why on earth are people choosing to call themselves that instead of, idk, photographers, video editors, writers, artists?

Content content content content content I swear to god if I hear that word one more time I'm going ballistic. 90% of the time, people use the word to mean "videos" or "posts." Is "youtuber" a slur now? God I'd rather hear slurs than "content creator" another fucking time. Why tf does everyone talk like they're suits in a stock meeting?

Yeah Canada arrested the daughter of Huawei's founder, Meng Wanzhou, for nearly three years. It was for bullshit reasons and on the US's behalf because as we all know, Canadians are just American henchmen.

Hi! It's so cool to meet commies from other countries. Now that you're here, I have some VERY important questions to ask you: What do South Koreans think of China? Do you like Buldak noodles? Can you wiggle your ears?

According to Wynn-Williams, Zuckerberg requested that she arrange either a “peace rally” or a “riot” during his visit. Facebook’s CEO never explains the request, but Wynn-Williams speculates he wanted "to test out how effective his product is in turning Facebook’s online tools into offline power.”
Americans say that TikTok is Chinese propaganda meanwhile Facebook straight up tried to incite a pro-Zuck protest in China. It's projection to the extreme

"Zenz's so-called 'research report' will be swept into the dustbin of history together with himself, and will be spurned by the 25 million people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang," Xu said.
The Chinese are sending Zenz to the shadow realm dustbin. You love to see it

It's true that Nazi Germany, Italy, and friends had colonization projects in Africa, but people didn't create a new word about it because that's generally understood for what it is. But when they did it to other Europeans, suddenly THAT requires an update in vocabulary and a paradigm shift? Do white people think they're too good to be colonized or what

When I saw the guy in the top right, my first thought was SunnyV2 instead of the king lol
Also Lisa failed the test right?

Is that a surprise though? Fascism is just a word that means "imperialism done to white people"

Actually it's 114 minutes because your homework is to read all three. I'm expecting a report from you tomorrow.

For real. If you're not inclined to join either the leftist or the tech instances, there's not much point being here. It's just a clunkier version of Reddit with fewer people and even fewer original posts.
It doesn't even do anything different from Reddit even though the opportunity to set itself apart is there. I mean, lemmygrad and hexbear constantly post new megathreads for casual discussion so why not implement a chat feature directly onto the platform? Why can't we follow a post? Why can't we create different subscription boxes? (I'm pretty sure Reddit lets you do that actually)
idk it's just lame that we're apparently content with being reddit jr.

If I'm remembering correctly, "state capitalism" was coined to describe what the west developed during the world wars. In order to mobilize their countries to fight, their federal governments took control of their industries to reorganize production for the war effort. Those governments also took greater responsibility for their people to ensure that they were healthy and fit to work/kill.
This kind of societal restructuring is a big step towards developing communism because it's essentially socializing the means of production. If proles could take control of a country like this, it's easy to imagine how they'd use these state controls to direct production toward other projects.

Lemmy (this social media platform) along with everything that's linked with it like mastodon.

I wasn't trying to make it sound like the British or the Americans are the poorest people in the world, my bad if I gave that impression. You're right that those countries benefit from imperialist plunder and that the global south is deprived because of that theft.
And not to make this a poverty competition, but the poorest people in the core aren't living under a roof at all. Capitalism is unequal so not everyone shares the spoils of their country's exploitation, which was what I was getting at. Just because a capitalist country has good stats doesn't mean its people live well.

Poor people in Britain can't just walk over to a market in Liberia to shop. They have to spend their British currency at British stores and on British rent, bills, taxes.
This topic comes up a lot on Rednote where Chinese people keep being surprised by how dirt poor normal Americans are. Because the American dollar is worth 7x more than Chinese renminbi, Chinese people think each and every American is 7x richer than them. But reality is closer to the opposite being true.

Considering where it gets the name from, Culombia is how it really should be written.

Yeah you can spoof your caller ID to be any phone number at all. Scammers usually give themselves your local area code, but I've never seen one bold enough to pose as a bank. That's definitely illegal if they're ever caught (they won't be).

Final Fantasy 15's incredible Spanish localization
I noticed that the Spanish versions of FFXV make several creative decisions that set them apart from English. But I couldn't find mention about this anywhere so I've spent some time compiling a bunch of noteworthy changes to share. Espero que les interese!
El don Lux
The most prominent change in the Spanish versions is that Noctis's hereditary powers are in Latin. It's called "the gift of Lux" and every teleportation-related ability has that title. I checked, and this is unique to the Spanish versions of the game. Not even the original Japanese does this even though the main characters's names are Latin in every language. It's a truly inspired choice that's canon as far as I'm concerned - it adds to the light vs. dark themes, it sounds much cooler, and it's literally Noct's family name (Noctis Lucis Caelum).
Every gift of Lux and its lame English equivalent:
Español | English |
---|---|
Lux Impetus | Warp-Strike |
Lux Itineris | Point-Warp |
Lux Evasio | Warp Out |
Lux Mortis | Warp |

Does anyone else never dream?
I don't dream. No nightmares either. I have no problems sleeping and I'm not on drugs so it isn't a health thing - I've been like this all my life.
The only times I've managed to dream are when I nap while already well-rested, but even then I still usually don't. Like I might get 1 or 2 dreams a year in total from when I go back to sleep immediately after waking up, but never from normal sleep.
Anyone else like this?

How do you unblock someone?
I fat fingered the options menu and accidentally tapped on block. How do I unblock? It only gives me the option to block even harder hahaha

The Minneapolis Police: A Criminal Organization

YouTube Video

The Department of Justice recently released their report on the Minneapolis Police Department (the one that murdered George Floyd) and this video goes over their findings.
It's cartoonish how brutally excessive their use of force is and how little these cops are held to account, even now. Some examples are:
- Pursuing a woman for jaywalking then grabbing her arms behind her back and slamming her face into the curb while stating, "You play stupid games, you get stupid prizes."
- Putting a man who was calmly walking in a park in a neck restraint and pinning him to the floor for 13 minutes (later needing intubation).
- Shoving a peaceful protestor to the ground and causing traumatic brain injury, only to later claim that it was a "slight push" and that the protestor "walked towards [him] with her right hand up and clinched." A fellow officer corroborated this version of events despite contradictory body cam footage.
No consequences have been enacted against the MPD yet, only proposed.

Reframing geopolitics from a Marxist perspective
A banger conversation where Radhika Desai challenges common narratives regarding world development communistly. She made a lot of interesting arguments and I took some notes that I'm gonna share here:
- imperialism is when nationstates manage capitalism's contradictions at the expense of subordinate territories
- once capitalism develops in one country, other countries are forced to either become subordinate (buy their excess commodities, surrender resources) or develop themselves (protectionist, state-directed industrialization)
- maintaining unevenness is imperialism, resisting this underdevelopment is anti-imperialism
- global development is not the spread of markets, not the rule of successive hegemonies, but the spread of multipolarity
- golden age of capitalism was after WWII and was actually ruined by capitalism, not caused by it
- it came about from socialist policies that wringed monopolies: regulations, full employment, welfare, universal education, healthcare, price c

guys I just found out about Special Drawing Rights
The IMF can literally conjure any amount of money out of thin air whenever they feel like it wtf how have I never heard about this
And before you ask, yes, almost all money created goes straight into the coffers of western countries instead of to the global south

A discussion on the current and future impact of US sanctions
The year 2022 was defined by the war in Ukraine, the expansion of NATO, and continued encirclement of China as the U.S. prepares for “great power conflict.” But the US empire is so overstretched, that sanctions have become the favorite form of warfare— to disrupt and isolate many countries at once. ...
I know it's a really long video (play it at 2x speed) but I thought it was fantastic and the part from 25:33-27:17 was particularly insightful:
"The impact of sanctions on Iran or Zimbabwe or Venezuela or Syria is something that those who may oppose western governments don't really ever discuss. So imagine if instead there was a NATO attack on Iran, you would have immediate clarity of what's happening. But the impact of sanctions on the Iranian people is not something that generates any sort of political mobilization in the core. Instead, actually, what it enables is a representation of imperialist states as humanitarian states."
"It's not like you're bringing home people in body bags. It's not like people in the US see the outcome of sanctions because it's not like CNN is going to cover the fact that Iranians of dying of rare diseases because they can't access certain pharmaceutical medications that they aren't able to produce in their own country and can't buy because of sanctions.

The Pentagon has failed its audit for the 5th time in a row

The Pentagon – the U.S. “Defense” Department – was just audited for the fifth time. And they just announced they failed for the fifth time. If that’s not

They straight up can't locate 61% of their assets, including weapons, planes, ships, and even buildings. In total, this amounts to several TRILLIONS of dollars since 1998 that are completely unaccounted for.

History of US Sanctions Against Zimbabwe
The U.S. just levied new sanctions against Zimbabwe. While the media hardly mentioned them, the US & EU have sanctioned Zimbabwe for 21 years. BT's Kei Pritsker explains the devastating sanctions and how they punish the country simply for reclaiming land for the Black majority.
In these pressing times, the magnanimous United States has decided to celebrate the holiday season by imposing some new sanctions against Zimbabwe. This vid explains the long history of Zimbabwean debt to western powers.
P.S. It's so difficult to find more information about this because literally no one is reporting on it. This press release from the US Treasury is all I got.
