Whiskey Ditch my favorite way; with snow

A Whiskey Ditch is just whiskey and water. Montana legend says people used to use slushy snow from the edge of a ditch. I don't know how sanitary that is, but I like using fresh snow.

It's pretty neat how insanely fast the snow melts when you add the whiskey (bourbon for me tonight). Like cotton candy in water.
Should be no sediment in the drink - if there is then your snow isn't clean enough. And never use lemon snow!
I'm very excited for summer, but every season has something nice that the others don't. Though I suppose I could use a shaved ice machine or something...
I'd bet she would. Adding it to my to-try list, thanks!
We made tepache last summer and it was fantastic. Highly recommend to anyone who hasn't tried it. I wanted to try bottling it but got too scared from all the explosion stories online.
My brother in law makes mead and he's had a couple explosions. And once he gifted us a bottle that we didn't drink for a while and when we opened it it rocketed everywhere. Only had about an inch left in the bottle afterword haha.
Martinez sounds cool!!
I made a Black Manhattan and yeah it'll be my new Manhattan go-to for sure. Super good.
Tried Mezcal for the first time yesterday and am a big fan so I'll have to try a Dead Lady soon, currently don't own Falernum though
Sounds like really cool modifications! Sometimes I wish I wasn't such a lightweight so I could experiment faster...
I really liked my Old Fashioned last night, I mentioned in the high-scores edit to my original post that next time I'll try diluting more and I probably won't use sugar cubes moving forward (simple syrup instead).
The Monkey Gland was good too! But see above for why I probably won't make it again 😜 The history just makes my nethers tingle in a bad way.
The Teresa was a great suggestion for me! Crazy how close it is to a Negroni even though it kinda comes from a different direction
Alcohol destroys my sleep so I usually only drink Friday and Saturdays, but the fun of making drinks has made me want to get really good at mocktails. Sometimes I make a good one, but it's kinda hard to not just end up with super sweet juice...
But I always drink my water without ice. No judgement on ice people, but to me water is for hydration and ice just slows you down. /s
I tried a basic recipe first and it was great! Super excited to riff on this drink. My wife loves St. Germaine so that'll be fun to try. I put this drink pretty high on my high-scores list that I edited at the bottom of my original post
My friend, I loved this cocktail and will be enjoying them the rest of my life. Hadn't had mezcal until today and I really liked it. Wife is a big fan too. Thanks!!
This is the recipe I tried and it was excellent!
Probably depends on local air quality and how recently the snow fell. But I and everyone I know eats snow so I hope so...
Thanks for the suggestions! Added to my to-try list. And yeah life's been great leaving that church. I'm still trying to accept that Sundays are fun now and nothing to dread on Saturday evenings 😅
And my best 3x3 solve was 18.83 seconds. But my average is closer to 24 seconds, that solve was just kinda a lucky one!
Oooh, haven't heard it called the Twice Up, but here in Montana the Whiskey Ditch is popular which is just whiskey and water. In winter we use snow and I definitely like snow/cold water with mine. I guess people here used to use actual ditch water which I kind of love and will never try
Looks like a great book for me, just ordered a copy!

Recommend me a cocktail!

(Humble brag of all my Rubik's cubes)
Hey all, so I'm an ex-mormon who made it through college without a sip of alcohol. I've been trying to play catch-up but my wife and I are scared of bars and all my friends' recommendations have been
<some_juice>
with vodka.I've been trying to learn how to drink for a couple years now. I've built up a medium collection of bottles (some of which I have no idea what to do with...). I feel like I've gone through most of the classic cocktails, but recently went back through my starting drinks because I think my pallet has opened up as I've gone along. Among the first cocktails I made myself were an old fashioned and a Manhattan and I know I didn't like either, but I'm having a Manhattan right now and really enjoying it (planning on trying an old fashioned again sometime soon).
Anyway, I've frequently wished for an expert to chat with who could give me recommendations. So drop yours below!
Some of the drinks I love:
- Negroni - so far, if there wer
Gonna be my first protest. Was gonna go for Canada but now it feels more like a protest for every country besides Russia and North Korea...
This was me two days ago! But on a bike and looking generally more like a homeless man than a wizard
My mom is a school counselor at a tiny school in a tiny town in Montana. There is no way the school stays open. Or 90% of our public schools for that matter. Part of me wants to tell her "I told you so" but generally it just sucks so bad I don't have the energy
I'm currently trying to figure out how to use RSS for this reason.
Yeah - I just wish our leaders (Democrat ones) would call for protests at least. It would help. Instead we twiddle our thumbs as our institutions are destroyed. I haven't heard of a single protest for the tariffs today that nobody wants but Trump and Putin...
France is literally protesting better than the USA over our own issues...
Well, how'd everyone do? I had to order some magic cards so I stayed up until midnight to do it lol. I also need to replace a pvc pipe under my kitchen sink so that waited until today and I've been getting water from the bathroom...

Can Pia make more than 2 energy per combat? (Answered/solved)

Edit: Sounds like the limit is 2 energy per opponent per combat, except in the case of first and double strike, which triggers Pia both damage steps. Thanks Lemmy!
Edit 2: Here's the deck if anyone's interested!
Original question:
I'm a bit confused on her first ability. If 3 artifact creatures did combat damage to a player, would that make 6 energy, or just 2?
It's the "one or more" text that makes me wonder if there is a cap of 2 energy per combat. Hoping not since I want to make an energy commander deck with her.

The music video is chilling and I highly recommend.
Some quotes:

Edit: Uncensored the song title as requested - I fucking love Lemmy :)

Does anyone have book recommendations for balancing life and media consumption?

I recently listened to Dopamine Nation, it wasn't all that relevant to my life, but it got me thinking a lot about how much time I waste every day consuming media.
I'm looking for book recommendations on how to make changes with my media habits - I'd like a bit more balance with hobbies, chores, projects, etc. Basically just not feeling like all I do after work anymore is watch YouTube.
More details about my specifics below, but feel free to skip if you're in a hurry and just want to drop your book :)
So Dopamine Nation was mostly about drug abuse, or people with actual debilitating addictions. The stories are kinda insane and fun to listen to. But I haven't quite ruined my life with internet addiction (yet). Some insights were useful, but I want things a bit more specific to my situation. Not advice for how to get off heroine.
Lately I've been frustrated that I've had little free time to work on my projects. It feels like after work I just have to chill out and recover - whic

How to avoid arthritis later in life?
I'm a 28 year old guy, no signs of arthritis yet. But both my parents have quite debilitating and different forms of arthritis.
My dad (54 years old) thought he tore something in his knee getting out of his car on some ice recently. It wasn't healing. MRI revealed that he just has terrible arthritis. He's about 200lbs and 6 feet tall and fairly active still. But for years his knees have made it hard for him to hike or mountain bike. He still goes, but complains constantly. He can not do a squat, can't sit cross-leg, and has trouble getting down onto the ground or back up (for like 10 years straight).
My mom used to cut hair, now she has really bad arthritis in her fingers, and some in her back. She's far more mobile than my dad. Also a healthy weight. I'm a software engineer so my fingers are quite important to me.
Neither of them smoke or drink alcohol - at all.
I'm super active. I ran track in college. I mountain bike, freedive, backpack, pretty much anything outdoors. Exercise f

Knitting row counters work well as life counters

They're cheap and at most craft stores. Small enough to store with my dice.
Also, the card was a cool Christmas gift, it's a custom card of my dog.
Gives me a christmas card idea where there's a custom magic card for each of us and lines to cut them out so you can play with them.
Someone should do that as an etsy shop or something.

Hand grinder coarseness counter hack

We've been using that little red thing that says 42 to keep track of the grind setting on our hand grinder - just thought I'd share since it's been super useful.
It's a row counter for knitting. They're super cheap and at craft stores. I used them originally to count life in the Magic The Gathering card game.
Anyway, our hand grinder doesn't have any way to tell what setting it's on, and as we dial in new beans we write on the bag what setting worked well. For a while, we'd just reset to 40 after every grind, but that was annoying and I regularly would lose track of what setting it was on.
I bounce between decaf and caffinated beans a lot, so my grind setting changes regularly. This has been working super well for my wife and I though!

My coffee journey - Mormon, to hobbyist

tl;dr: I was raised without any caffeine; the first black coffee I tried nearly made me choke; my wife's espresso-milk drinks never strongly appealed to me; for a few years, if I walked into a coffee shop I wouldn't know what to order or what I liked; but now I adore pour-over and care deeply about making a good cup of coffee. Also, I'm a bit sensitive to caffeine.
Alternate title: some of the differences my coffee journey taught me about loving coffee, vs having coffee as a hobby.
Photo: Shows the majority of our (my wife, dog, and I) brewing equipment. You may notice one of the mugs has our dog's ears on it! And that the coffee bar is on the dog's crate. And there's some coffee plant sprouts in the corner.
Disclaimer: I'm particular and have some strong preferences - I don't mean to sound like any of my preferences are “correct” or “superior." :)
For a long time coffee was a contentious point between my wife and I. I was raised in a religion that believes the

First time canoe camping

Borrowed a canoe from a friend and canoed across a lake to camp. It was fun, hiked up to explore some more lakes from our camp. The dog didn't love the canoe, but did fine. The water was some of the clearest I've ever seen, will be returning to do some freediving. I do think I still prefer backpacking over canoe-camping. We rowed just over 2 miles to get to camp.

City trail = parking lot snow overflow

There is a hill to the left so it's actually really hard to walk through. Don't wanna go in the parking lot cause of my dog. It's a great trail connecting 2 parks but the section by the mall is not respected by the snow plows.
Would be such a shame to have to keep their snow on a row of unused parking spots! (This is the back side of our mall so no cars almost ever)

Still waiting for a good set to justify cracking open my piggy bank

Got this because I don't like carrying cash (weird because I'm pretty into privacy, but I have a minimal wallet and am scared to hold lines up at stores lol)
It actually has to be broken to open which I love. The "MTG Fund" part was a joke at first but it's been a while since I was excited for a set and actually wanted to spend money on it. Bloomburrow seems promising, loved Redwall as a kid.
Might just be product fatigue. I've been very into pauper commander lately which holds me over

Had a blast playing DND Young Adventurers with no rules
Picked up the young adventurer books thinking that they had simpler kid rules, but I guess they have no rules (you're supposed to just be motivated to buy a starter set or something). So I played with my niece (8) and nephew (5) without any rules and they LOVED it. Right after our first short adventure they wanted to play again.
I basically just made them roll for anything they wanted to do in combat and took turns as usual. Let them roll to respond to any attack back at them. No HP, just descriptions of injuries.
They loved upgrading their swords into go-go-gadget everything weapons with buttons to shoot spikes, or light on fire - so I let them. Even the boat they needed had to become a sword upgrade magic inflatable raft haha.
Anyway, highly recommend for young players.

Help request - COD BO1 Zombies mouse acceleration/sensitivity
Has anyone been able to get consistent mouse input on black ops 1 zombies? Most maps feel okay, but I can't get Call of the Dead to a remotely playable state...
Tried lowering my mouse polling rate to 125Hz, raising my max framerate, disabling vsync and mouse acceleration. Still horrendous.
Not sure if this is Linux specific or if it's on Windows as well. I really wanna play Call of the Dead, but it's as if someone is adjusting my mouse sensitivity constantly while I play. The effect is not little.
Edit:
Using a controller works fine I just discovered, I definitely prefer mouse and keyboard, but at least I have an option!
Details of symptoms: It feels kind of like the framerate lowers significantly super frequently; during these moments my mouse acts like I cranked down the sensitivity as low as it'll go - to the point where I have to lift my mouse multiple times to turn 90 degrees, then things kick back in and I spin a 720 while readjusting to my normal sensitivity. Extremely dis

Game ad notification on Windows...

Have to use Windows for work (I've asked), the ads have been getting worse and worse on my work laptop. Today got a game ad notification... That's clearly too far, right? Like I have to clear notifications, so I have to see it

What game(s) do you replay the most?
And with what player count?
I've been showing a few of my friends the Star Wars Deck Building Game and Star Realms quite a bit. Loving them. Most of the time I'm only playing two player games. Another that I replay a lot is Hive.
There's games I like more, but that I don't seem to get to play very often. Maybe I need to be proactive about setting up game nights!

What's a good site to build decks on?
For a while I've kept a text document for each deck I build (that I have to order cards for), I try separating by card type and organizing by mana cost but it would definitely be easier if I used a site made for this task.
It'd be great if it also:
- Supported other card games (Pokemon and Flesh and Blood)
- Could export a deck to a text list (Mostly for proxying (are we allowed to talk about proxies here?))

Was this instance migrated from social.fossware.space?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t this instance located at social.fossware.space before? Anyone know what happened?
I’m particularly interested because my main Lemmy account was on the fossware instance which seems to have disappeared overnight. Not sure if it’s just temporarily down, or was migrated here. I definitely can’t log in to lemmy.dbzer0.com via my old account.
Edit: Sounds like the two instances are unrelated. Fossware just seems to be down. Hopefully just for server maintenance!
