  • Americans Owe a Staggering $1.66 Trillion in Auto Debt; Repossessions Are at the Highest Rate Since 2009

    Highlights:

according to a new report from the Consumer Federation of America, U.S. buyers currently owe more than $1.66 trillion in auto-related debts.

average car payment in the States is now around $745, with average loan amounts totaling over $41,000; nearly 20 percent of buyers have found themselves with payments of more than $1000 a month

Repossessions were also up 43 percent from 2022 to 2024, representing the highest rates since 2009.

Things aren’t much better on the used car side of things. Prices were up 6.3 percent year-over-year as of June, continuing the trend started during the supply constraints of the pandemic. Furthermore, one-in-four trade-in vehicles have negative equity attached, meaning that people are upside down on a large portion of the cars on sale today.

  • Tariffs and fentanyl issue cloud prospects of Donald Trump-Xi Jinping summit in Beijing

US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent on Sunday met Chinese vice-premier He Lifeng in Madrid for a fourth round of negotiations that some hope will pave the way for President Trump to visit Beijing just before the October 31 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in South Korea.

But insufficient progress in the US-China talks have reduced the odds of a Beijing summit and made it more likely that Trump and Xi will hold a lower profile meeting at Apec, according to people familiar with the situation.

One person familiar with the talks said a big stumbling block was US frustration at Beijing for not cracking down on export of chemicals used to make fentanyl, a deadly synthetic opioid. Beijing has offered to take action, but only in tandem with the US eliminating fentanyl-related tariffs that Trump imposed on China. The US insists that China should take action and show results before any tariff relief.

Recent developments have also cast doubt on whether the pieces will fall into place for a summit in Beijing. Trump on Saturday urged Nato countries to impose 50-100 per cent sanctions on China to pressure Beijing to stop it buying oil from Russia. That came days after he urged the EU to impose a 100 per cent levy on imports from China.

“The Chinese are willing to host without conditions but, so long as parts of the administration say a fentanyl package must be implemented first, the US will remain the obstacle to a visit,” said the former official

Evan Medeiros, a China expert at Georgetown University, said whether Trump would go to Beijing would be a “very close call in the history of close calls” and would “depend on Trump and come down to the last minute”.

  • ::: spoiler USA economic news

(Financial Times) Most of the USA is in a recession. GDP growth propped up only by AI money, 86% of all new jobs created in 2025 are in the healthcare sector, jobs are down in most sectors and states

    highlights:

an early August poll by the Economist and YouGov, almost half of respondents said the US economy was “getting worse”. Close to one-third thought the US was already in recession; 28 per cent weren’t sure.

In US President Donald Trump’s second-term, economic resilience has come largely from four narrow sources: a handful of states, artificial intelligence, healthcare and the wealthy

Friday’s non-farm payrolls report, showing a small gain of 22,000 jobs in August, would have been negative were it not for the sector. So far in Trump’s second term, 598,000 jobs have been created. A staggering 515,000 — or 86 per cent of them — are healthcare and social assistance jobs.

Since April, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ payroll diffusion index for the private sector fell below 50, signifying that more sectors are shedding jobs than gaining them.

US GDP would have grown at a mere 0.6 per cent annualised rate in the first half of 2025 were it not for AI-related spending, or half the actual rate.

The official website for The Office of the President of Burkina Faso makes no mention of this anywhere. Neither does the official facebook page, which is the governments most active social media platform, or on Ibrahim Traore’s personal twitter

An Instagram page with a censored name for a huge news announcement being the only source should be a large red flag for Hexbear readers. I will be making a larger effortpost on this, but there is much misinformation online about the AES and Burkina Faso, including misinformation about positive developments. As should always be the case, we must keep a sharp eye for news about anti western hegemony states, and do more research for before blinding believing any social media screenshots as real sources.

I notice that many of these dubious posts about the AES are on ChapoTrapHouse, and not the news comm or megathread, and I believe this is because the news areas have much stricter standards about sources and more skeptical audiences

Burkina Faso and the Sahel Confederation have made many actual positive developments, and these real events are being obscured by posts such as these

  • [https://archive.is/ZZkew](Britain and India sign free trade pact during Modi visit)

LONDON/NEW DELHI, July 24 (Reuters) - Britain and India signed a free trade agreement on Thursday during a visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sealing a deal to cut tariffs on goods from textiles to whisky and cars and allow more market access for businesses. The two countries concluded talks on the trade pact in May after three years of stop-start negotiations, with both sides hastening efforts to clinch a deal in the shadow of tariff turmoil unleashed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The agreement between the world's fifth and sixth largest economies aims to increase bilateral trade by a further 25.5 billion pounds ($34 billion) by 2040. It is Britain's biggest trade deal since it left the European Union in 2020, although its impact will be a fraction of the effect of leaving the orbit of its closest trading partner. For India, it represents its biggest strategic partnership with an advanced economy, and one which could provide a template for a long mooted deal with the EU as well as talks with other regions.

It will take effect after a ratification process, likely within a year.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the deal would bring "huge benefits" for both countries, making trade cheaper, quicker and easier. "We've entered a new global era, and that is one that requires us to step up, not to stand aside... by building deeper partnerships and alliances," Starmer said. Modi said the visit would "go a long way in advancing the economic partnership between our nations".

They also agreed a partnership covering areas such as defence and climate, and said they would strengthen co-operation on tackling crime.

Under the trade agreement, tariffs on Scotch whisky will drop to 75% from 150% immediately, and then slide to 40% over the next decade, according to the British government. On cars, India will cut duties to 10% from over 100% under a quota system that will be gradually liberalised.

In return, Indian manufacturers will gain access to the UK market for electric and hybrid vehicles, also under a quota system.

The ministry has said 99% of Indian exports to Britain would benefit from zero duties under the deal, including textiles, while Britain will see reductions on 90% of its tariff lines, with the average tariff UK firms face dropping to 3% from 15%.

While it is Britain's biggest deal since Brexit, the projected boost to British economic output, of 4.8 billion pounds a year by 2040, is small compared to the country's gross domestic product of 2.6 trillion pounds in 2024.

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has forecast that UK exports and imports will be about 15% lower in the long run compared with if Britain had stayed in the EU. In its first year in power, Britain's Labour government has launched a reset of ties with the EU in order to smooth trade friction, while also clinching some tariff relief from the United States and the India trade deal.

"In an era of rising protectionism, today's announcement sends a powerful signal that the UK is open for business," said Rain Newton-Smith, the chief executive of the Confederation of British Industry.

The India deal will also facilitate easier access for temporary business visitors, though visas are not covered. Britain and India also agreed to ensure workers no longer have to make social security contributions in both India and Britain during temporary postings in the other country.

Under the trade deal, British firms will be able to access India's procurement market for projects in sectors such as clean energy, and it also covers services sectors such as insurance.

India didn't succeed in its efforts to get an exemption from Britain's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) - which could levy higher taxes on polluters from 2027 - as part of the deal. Meanwhile talks over a separate bilateral investment treaty are continuing.
