  • Thank you. Do you have any experience with them? My initial reaction (not saying it's justified, just what it is) is concern about the fact that they are a fintech that is still relatively new in banking terms. Given the issues other fintechs have had and the general tech bro vibe around them I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to be weary of them, but I also know I can be overly cautious in my thinking with these things.

Regardless, the service appears to be exactly what I was thinking of so I will dig into them.

Looking for bank based in the US that would allow me to hold foreign currency in a checking or savings account

I am a US citizen living in the US (glass it from orbit please) and as the title implies I am wondering if it is possible to move my checking and savings account(s) to a bank that would allow that money to be converted and held as euros. From my research so far it does appear there are some banks that may be able to facilitate this (HSBC, Citi, Wells Fargo), but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with doing so?

In addition to recommendations or general thoughts about the bank(s) I should consider looking at I was also curious if:

    • Direct deposits in USD were possible and how they were handled in terms of converting them (does it happen automatically, or is it a manual action)?
    • Is it possible to use ACH debiting?

For whatever it's worth in case someone asks or wants to interject, most of my money is currently in my retirement accounts and not in my savings, I have an emergency fund and I won't be doing anything that might harm it.

Regardless of whether what I am asking

  • That is just horrendous. I am not a coder by trade or education, but I do a fair amount of it in my job. I may heavily use copy and paste, but I at least make sure it matches the structure of my current code, and I always include the URL to where I got it in a comment above the code.

  • The bikes I am looking to buy for the purpose of commuting over mixed terrain is in the $800-$1,400 price range (as of last year before tariff stuff). I don't currently own a bike but I have owned and ridden a number of bikes in the past. The couple of hundred dollar bikes from like Walmart are just trash that don't hold up. They fall apart pretty quickly under heavy riding.

All of this assumes one is buying new. If we are talking used then all of the above is somewhat a moot point.

Even within new the kind of riding matters a lot. If I know for a fact that I would only ever be riding on smooth paved roads then an old fixed frame street bike with skinny tires and very basic brakes and gears would make a lot of sense. There is zero chance that bike is going to be switching between road, grass, gravel, mud, and some of the other terrain I would be commuting across though.

  • All of those facts are irrelevant and distractions though. Assuming that is the case then he should have been tried according to the rules of this country. The point in concentrating on this isn't about the individual, it's about the implication and precedent that is being set for everyone in the future.

  • I assume they will. The problem right now is how volatile and abrupt these policies are. If they make an adjustment now, sell a laptop at that price, and then tomorrow additional tariffs are implemented they may well end up with a loss on that sale to you. The pause is likely just to see where things will stabilize to.

  • I actually think it's a good thing I don't enjoy every show. In my mind it means that they are making content for a wider audience thus making it more sustainable. That is of course assuming some people enjoy the things I don't like.

  • They are, but like I said it's possible to create a self directed one. Essentially I'm wanting to hedge my bets. On the small chance that things don't go to complete shit I would like what I do to be above board and legal under the (somewhat) sane(r) laws and regulations so I don't get nailed by the IRS. Doing what I mentioned would essentially put the money out of reach of the US government if they decided to start seizing assets or if I were arrested, but still legal if things don't go south.

It's not an insignificant amount of money, but it's also not enough to have a dedicated firm or person to manage all of this (if it were I'd probably be safe in this oligarchy hell scape).

  • Trying to get my retirement money moved to foreign assets and currency. Ideally I want it to out of reach of the US government so that if I do somehow make it out of the other side alive I'll still have access to it. I believe the ideal way would be to create an offshore LLC and create a self directed IRA that I then move my retirement money to. I have no idea how tenable this is though.

Looking for recommendations on the most cost effective button only (no joystick) handheld running an Android OS?

I know the title is hyper specific but it gets even worse, lol.

Plainly speaking my "requirements" are as follows:

    • Android operating system
    • No joysticks
    • As small as possible

The importance of the requirements are roughly in order (top being the most important). The second and third requirement roughly go hand in hand. The reason being that I want something I can stick in the pocket of a sports jacket or even somewhat tighter fitting pants and not have to worry about something catching or getting damaged.

The first requirement comes down to a custom "ROM" that started my desire and search for such a device.

    Pokémon: Infinite Fusion

For those unaware this custom game isn't actually a ROM meant for a legacy game system but has actually been developed to run on a PC. However, it is possible to play the game on mobile via an app on Android called JoiPlay.

I have played it some on my phone and enjoyed it, but it's missing that tactile feel hence this rabbit hole.

Set custom colors for posts/links that have been opened (Update: It already exists 🤦‍♀️)

I sometimes find it hard to tell at a glance if a post I'm looking at is one I have clicked on since they are just a slightly lighter grey than posts I haven't clicked on. Being able to set it to whatever color I would like would be very helpful.

What is the "proper" way to view all of the startup programs and services?

I know the above question isn't fully complete and lacks some important information, I will (hopefully) provide that below, but first I want to explain where I am coming from with this question a little.

I would consider myself a power user in Windows (maybe even more than that). At one point I was even studying for my Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA 70-270), worked in IT dealing with complex virus removal (anyone remember Combofix and Bleeping Computer?) and generally am comfortable bending anything up to about Windows 10 to my will.

I also have some experience programming in .Net, Java, Python, and Arduino's version of C++ (FWTW).

I have been trying to force myself to use Linux as my primary for a little while now. I ran Mint as my primary OS for a little over a year, and have recently switched to Manjaro to try Wayland and "increase the difficulty level" as it were.

The problem that motivated this post is that I recently installed an application via the AUR by cl

What would be the best Fediverse sub/community/place for questions about probability and statistics?

Basically exactly what the title says. In case there isn't a great place, or this post ends up getting more visibility than wherever I end up asking I will explain my approximate competency level and the question below.

In terms of competency I have an engineering background and degree, which means I had a single class in statistics. Technically I was one class short of a math minor (Graph Theory) when I graduated. Unlike most engineers and Six Sigma "graduates" I don't think this automatically makes me some kind of math/stats wizard. I'm aware I know just enough that I can unintentionally massage data to fit my bias (mini rant over).

My question is, when looking at a human population and trying to find the approximate subset of people with certain attributes how are correlations handled to avoid double counting?

For example let's say I am looking at a specific city and my data sets are thee most recent census, BLS.gov, and Pew Research. With the above sources I can pretty easily e

Are there any macro pads that can be programmed via a text file stored onboard?

I am wanting a macro pad for work, but we are not allowed to install software on them and even the websites we have access to is limited. I don't want to have to use my personal computer or take the pad home whenever I want to make a more complex macro and am wondering if there are any where the keys can be configured using a configuration file stored onboard?
