  • You're going to likely interpret the following as snark or more anger, but I promise you it's not. I ask the following in good faith: if you encounter folks who believe that large corporations, generally, and the use of proprietary software/hardware by those corporations, specifically, are having harmful effects on humanity, do you expect those folks to respond without emotion when those subjects are broached? If so, why?

I do believe that large corporation should be held accountable for whenever they done anything shady and suggest alternatives as well as state the pros and cons of it.

My issue is them replying angrily at the people that happens to use it, not even knowing why they use it instead of the alternative, if the alternative can delivers what they can already do. Not all alternative are "one size, fit all" and sadly, some are more a compromise rather than they would get any benefit from using it.

You seem to be coming from a good place and your desire to get away from reddit probably reflects a belief that there's something wrong there. But maybe take a step back and ask yourself if there's a good reason that people seem angry?

I saw it the whole thing more as them assuming I want an community to mainly talk crap about older generation which isn't the case. To me, I vision the Gen-Z community I was wondering exist in Lemmy being like sort of like "90s kids" Facebook group which post meme related their childhood and stuff they grew up with. Again, not trying to do some generation war and talk crap at them.

If some have read my reply to others, they would realized that. But instead, they jump into conclusion so I felt like I was being yelled at for being a idiot for even asking and get accused for something I wasn't even thinking about.

If the tone is something like:

"I'm not too sure how good idea is having separate community for generation is as we're aleardy divided personally. But you find it better joining any community you find interesting"

I wouldn't be too upset and won't feel attacked and I can reply saying "It isn't meant to be a divide, rather..". But instead, they begin with "Fuck Gen-whatever" and be passive aggressive to me. That what annoyed me the most.

  • Yeah, I do think it comes down on whatever communities you're in which varies what the experience be like. Lemmy is very open-source focus which great asking for support and even finding interesting FOSS project but terrible how angry they get anything corporate or proprietary related and even they expectation for newbies to do.

I want to like Lemmy but I can't stand the users on there

TL;DR - Lemmy's userbase compare to Reddit just feel more angry and it so offputting when asking a question and getting an answer that sound like their pissed off. Feels oddly worse than Reddit.

Honestly, I want to like Lemmy as I want to try not use Reddit as much. The thing that is holding me back is I hate the users on Lemmy which their often passive aggressive and really snarky. I know Reddit does have those people but I always seen more them on Lemmy where I barely used it as much.

I asked on AskLemmy community if there's any Gen-Z community around, ideally just talking about nostalgia and stuff like that. Nothing malicious at all. Then got a angry reply saying "Fuck Gen-what, just join community and post!" and telling me about generation are there to "divide" people. Apparently, me asking community which mainly be me talking about cartoon and games I grow up with is evil.

If the tone was at least "This may not matter as much and you find it better picking any community th

  • I don't want to say that doesn't happen at all but what I mean was just asking a community that primarily is Gen-Z can talk about whatever they feel nostalgic (like whatever TV-Show or games I used to played).

But instead, Lemmy users had to be unhinged and spin it into something that apparently I want some kind of generation war or support a "divide". I might just go back to Reddit if they are this passive aggressive and take anything in bad faith

  • My experince of the Fediverse in general is that I notice there isn't as much Gen-Z users and mostly more millennials and Gen-X sorts. Because of it, it feels little awkward talking about stuff I'm interested in as they hadn't grow up with it and vice versa.

Then it also majority of them (and to be fair, so is other generation as well) used corporate social media and I have ditched at least most of them so I feel like the black sheep which feels little isolating I won't lie when trying to not use places like Facebook or Instagram which majority of them use.

  • Yes. When I was posting support related post, I felt bad posting it on here as I saw it as more for news or discussion related to Linux or at least people subscribe to it for that reason mainly.

Is it pointless to buy the Affinity Suite and try get it running on Linux?

For context, I want to teach myself Graphics Design as I had dropped out of college copule years ago for personal reason but still want to learn it.

I have heard from few people online that they have got Affinity running with Bottles or Wine. I really want to use less of Windows whereas possible but I'm unsure how well it performs on Linux and if there are a better alternative from Affinity and Adobe in general.

How do you setup Huenicorn to sync Hue Bridge?

I just got Huenicorn installed on my Linux desktop. Been struggling to get hue bridge to sync.

    1. I opened the huenicorn executable
    2. Typed my Hue Bridge's IP Address
    3. When I'm at the API Key screen, I pressed "I don't have credentials yet"
    4. It tells me to press the central button on my Hue Bridge and I have one minute to press "Register new user". Tried it several times with no luck.

The Hue Bridge doesn't seem to be an issue as today I got my light strip to sync to it.

  • It was ether from one of the subreddit talking about alternative to Reddit which was around the time of Reddit did changes to API or from someone made post about Lemmy on Mastodon and wanted to try it out.

  • It depends on which user and their workflow. For example, Graphics Designer use Photoshop compare to GIMP because of native CMYK for printing as well as non-destructive effects. Most people will be fine using GIMP.

I bring this up as I tend to see people on Lemmy and even in online space that talks about open source that would bitch about "normies" being too stubborn for not trying Linux or any open-source projects in general but never think about how much compromise they had to do if they do go down the open-source route.

Lack of celebrity/well known content-creator is the only con of the Fediverse

I know this is a double-edge sword and I can see why some would disagree on this but I mean it's a 'unpopular opinion' so I going to say it anyway

For me, I found discussing about one on the Fediverse is lot like talking to the wall dispite having hashtags. I felt like I can't talk about my comfort-artist as much. Reasons why people still use Twitter dispite Elon Musk made it identical to Gab & Trust Soical is there's content creator and celebrity there which is easy to get updates from there.

In theory, I should be alright with Threads but not as excited as it has some moderating issue such as LibsOfTikTok known for spreading Transphobia and pushing the narrative that all trans people are groomers. If this wasn't made by big company like Facebook, Admins of various instances would defederated straight away until they take moderation seriously.

Better alternative would be making an instance which is primarily for music artist or well-known content creator so anyone who isn't fond of

  • s*x questions on askreddit

Hopefully with LemmyNSFW instance, people would asked there instead on AskLemmy.

But one of the things I'm hoping for is less mean-spirited userbase and the "I am very smart" user. Sadly, it's unavoidable as it's the Internet and even irl, people act like that.

I don't really have the money to do self hosting which otherwise, I would do it.

The sort of videos I will make is
