A community dedicated to fediverse news and discussion.
Fediverse is a portmanteau of "federation" and "universe".
Getting started on Fediverse;
Feature Suggestion: Federated Open-Source Mapping and Navigation Platform?
(Random Thought That I had.)
Proposal:
Has anyone considered developing a federated, open-source alternative to platforms like:
Google Earth,
Magic Earth,
Google Maps,
Waze,
Here WeGo,
Sygic GPS,
OsmAnd,
etc.?
Imagine a decentralized platform where individuals and organizations can host, contribute, and share mapping, weather, navigation, geospatial data, etc. —fully in the spirit of the Fediverse.
Key Features Could Include:
Why This Matters:
Current navigation and mapping platforms are largely centralized, raising concerns about privacy, data ownership, and censorship. A federated approach woul

The Social Network That Can't Sell Out: Understanding Mastodon vs. Bluesky
As users flee from Twitter/X, two visions of social media's future compete: Mastodon's community-controlled network versus Bluesky's venture-backed promises. The difference isn't just technical—it's about whether we'll finally break free from the profit-driven cycle that has degraded every major soc...
Decentralization Scoring System
This scoring system evaluates how decentralized and self-hostable a platform is, based on four core metrics.
Top Provider User Share (30 points): Measures how many users are on the largest instance. Full points if <10%; 0 if >80%.
Top Provider Content Share (30 points): Measures how much content is hosted by the largest instance. Full points if <10%; 0 if >80%.
Ease of Self-Hosting: Server (20 points): Technical ease of running your own backend. Full points for Docker/simple setup with good docs.
Ease of Self-Hosting: User Interface (20 points): Availability and usability of clients. Full points for accessible, FOSS, multi-platform clients.
Technological platforms are not neutral. If we truly want to resist the digital coup that is currently under way, we need to normalize the use of free, open source solutions.

Collect your own data for fediverse
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/28241019
working on peertube recommendation algorithm has made me realize that we should be collecting our own data.
my program that monitors peertube watching habit and stores it locally and should track YouTube watching habit just so that data can be used in a recommendation algorithm. it would be a good idea for fediverse if there were programs that monitors and stores the data locally for the fediverse and corporate counterpart.
the reason why I would track youtube data was to get the titles of the video
Peertube recommendation algorythm update
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/28197750
I made a browser extension that track the video you watch on a peertube instance linked here https://github.com/solidheron/peertube_recomendation_algorythm
it works decently well but it still has some glitches and a bug that causes minor information loss that will need to be patched out. so this is in alpha and needs to be worked on. I do have another script that gets the data of a hundreds of peertube videos and the closed captions. so got some basic components of an algorithm started. next ill probably figure out how to categorize videos based on peertube api and closed captions.
It's weird knowing someone will improve on this at some point
bellow is the data structure of the browser extension. I did watch videos to get that data and all of this will be stored locally. I recommend looking at it with https://jsonformatter.org/json-viewer . leave a comment/suggestion, I'm up for any submissions.

So, you're captivated by the fediverse—the decentralized social web powered by protocols like ActivityPub. Maybe you're dreaming of building the next great federated app, a unique space connected to Mastodon, Lemmy, Pixelfed, and more. The temptation to dive deep and implement ActivityPub yourself, ...
Lemmy app for Android which includes translation?
Any app recommendations that will allow me to enjoy all the languages on Lemmy?
What's these software to interact with other fediverse softwares?
On mastodon you can easily read Pixelfed and Lemmy. Is that the best option? Can Lemmy not do the same?
Serious Question - Is the ActivityPub deletion problem a fatal flaw?
I've been using federated social media for a while now and I recently considered setting up an instance for my local community as a sort of Facebook alternative. However, as I thought about it, I wondered if ActivityPub's deletion problem (i.e. if a user deletes their content on their server it doesn't guarantee the content being deleted on other servers) is a fatal flaw. I worry that it would be difficult to secure buy-in from people if they were made aware of this issue, which they have the right to. It does make me wonder if the ATProtocol will be the better protocol if and when it becomes open source.
I'm curious as to other drivers users' thoughts. While it is an issue that we may be happy to live with given the numerous other benefits ActivityPub provides, is it a flaw that will ultimately prevent wide scale adoption?
Looking for a Fediverse Alternative to Tumblr: Loforo vs Wafrn vs Goblin vs Others?
I’ve been searching for a potential Fediverse-based alternative to Tumblr and recently came across Loforo, Goblin, and Wafrn.
All of them seem interesting, but I’m curious — which one do you think is better for recreating that Tumblr-like experience?
Or is there another platform out there on the Fediverse that’s an even better fit as a Tumblr alternative?
I know there’s been talk about Tumblr supposedly joining the Fediverse, but even if it does, I don’t feel comfortable relying on a centralized, corporate platform anymore.
I’d prefer to support smaller, decentralized, community-driven projects.
Do you have any experience with Loforo, Wafrn, or other platforms that could work for blogging, aesthetic sharing, and building micro-communities like Tumblr?
Would love to hear your thoughts.

Is there a get watch time data of the video you watch on peertube
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/28140813
Little update on making a peertube recommendation algorithm. I made a script that collects video json and closed caption from instances. Later on I'll figure out a way to organize the data into video description vector. (Data manipulation will be ever improving process but data collecting should be stagnant and only change with activityhub and peertube updates)
My question is if there's a program that monitors or gets a users video watch time and interaction data and stores it locally. I just need something to record my video interactions of peertube videos such as like or dislike a video.
i'm seeing regular shock content spam on matrix and even on here. what's going on?
anyone else noticed this? it started a few days ago
Has anyone thought about a Fediverse bot platform/app?
Is it just me, or has anyone else thought about the potential for a dedicated bot platform for the Fediverse?
Think of something similar to how Discord has two completely separate apps for managing Discord bots: Bots for Discord, and Bot Designer for Discord.
Users can find, customize, and run bots in Discord servers, all in one place.
Now imagine that, but tailored for the Fediverse.
What I’m envisioning is a platform/app where mods, admins, or individuals can create, browse, and easily deploy bots across different Fediverse platforms.
For example:
A new security fund opens up to help protect the fediverse
A new security fund aims to help apps in the fediverse — like Mastodon, Threads, and Pixelfed — to pay researchers for disclosing security bugs.
