  • I agree with most of the programs that others have posted. I'll just mention two that I absolutely love but no one has mentioned yet, rsync and mpv.

  • I'm not the guy you're replying to, but it is a bad analogy since learning to read a language leads to more exciting things, even if you don't enjoy reading books. You can communicate, do science, watch movies with subs etc. But learning chess does not make you good at anything else. (Tbh, I'm speaking out of my ass here, and will stand corrected if presented with research showing otherwise.)

  • Lol, I can relate. My friends are always surprised how good I am at a game when I'm playing for the first time (mostly card games, and board games). But I quickly get bored, so never get to be actually good at any of those.

Same with language. I can pick up a little bit of any language fairly quickly, but to actually learn it, I basically need to be forced e.g. live in a place where most people don't speak anything else.

  • Wtf are you talking about? I'm gonna give you the benefit of doubt, and assume that you're replying to the wrong thread.

  • Lol. Just in case someone finds it useful, the math of game theory has very little to do with games.

  • I'd argue that there is a certain kind of creativity in coming up with those moves. But since it's mostly a solved game now, modern players probably don't experience it anymore.

  • You also need a sharp memory. I'm good in math, but terrible in remembering things. I forget terms that I'm actively doing research on, and constantly need to look at notes. (Aside: I work on modular forms, and often write them down as MF in my notes. I have more than once read that aloud as motherfucker, once in front of my advisor. Dude is chill, so it's fine. But I dread the day it happens during a talk lol.)

Unlike in movies, most smart people aren't good in chess.

Sure, playing chess needs intelligence, dedication, and good chess players are smarter than an average person. But it's waaaay exaggerated in movies. I'm a math researcher, and in any movie, my department will be full of chess geniuses. But in reality, only about 10% of them even play chess.

  • It shouldn't happen, really. Can you send me a photo of your credit card so that I can see what's happening? 🤔

  • I honestly don't have a good answer to that. But I think someone like Tim Walz, who has some progressive ideas, but still fits the image of a president for most Americans, is the better choice for the next term.

  • I don't make the rules. US is deeply racist and sexist. There isn't much we can do to change it overnight. Trying to push an ultra progressive candidate will simply mean losing the election. I'll love to see Bernie or AOC as the president, but most Americans think that they're Communist, and that's somehow a deal breaker to them.

  • I'm literally a fucking socialist. I'm just being pragmatic here.

  • There may be other reasons, but US has never had a woman president. Ever. I don't think this is the time to risk it again. Maybe if the dems win once and do well, they can try pushing for AOC next.

  • It's very hard to find non-electric trains in India. In my >23 years spent there, the only time I encountered those were in the hill regions. And this map does align with that i.e. places with high altitude railway tracks seem to have a lower percentage of electrification in general.

  • It's actually a pretty rare sight. The pictures you see online are mostly historical, and sometimes Bangladeshi. (I have nothing against them. In fact, I speak Bangla as my first language and can relate to them more than I do to north and south Indians. But they do still have that issue to some degree.)

Unable to pull manual shots from Breville Bambino

I'm trying to pull manual shots from my Breville Bambino, and it simply isn't working. I'm following the steps in the manual. (Press and hold the double-shot button for pre-infusion, then release it for the extraction to start, and then press again to stop.) The issue is, the machine stops midway, before I press the button. Seems like it's doing the pre-programmed double shot volume, and stopping after that. Does anyone has experience pulling manual shots from this machine? Should I contact Breville for a repair?

Edit: It fixed itself after performing a factory reset.

Where can I submit a large list of spam emails?

I accidentally had my forgejo instance open for registration. When I noticed it, there were tons of fake accounts open, with empty repos opened for each account. All of them had emails associated with them. They might've just been trying to annoy me, or maybe there was some plan to be executed later, since they'd have access to basically free storage, without any tracking.

In any case, I have cleaned all of it, and now have a list of 19311 usernames and emails. Maybe I can submit these somewhere for a spam filter? Idk, just curious if there's any point in keeping this list.

    Here's the list.

    Need suggestions for VPS

I want to get a new VPS. It'll mostly be used to host lightweight Docker images, and reverse proxying through Caddy. So, decent CPU and fast network speeds are the main things I need.

I have a cheap VPS with RackNerd. It's fine, but only has a single CPU core, which gets overwhelmed if multiple connections are trying to pull stuff from some service. So, I guess having multiple cores is a requirement as well.

I want to spend around $5/month, but willing to go a little higher if it's worth it. Any suggestions are appreciated.

P.S. I'm based in US and would prefer something in here for lower latency.

Update: Hetzner's CX22 IPV6 only plan seems to be very good in terms of price-performance ratio. But the servers are in Europe. I'm planning to try it out for a while and see how the latency is. It's great that they don't lock you in with yearly plans.

    Recommendations for lightweight wiki servers?

I currently run a personal wiki for some notes, recipes, and stuff. It's set up using Wiki.js as the server. I'm the only regular user, and I feel like it's a bit of an overkill.

Does someone have any suggestions for a more lightweight wiki server? I tried DokuWiki and mostly like it. But the UI is very old and dare I say, ugly. I love the UI of Wiki.js btw.

My main criteria is that it should be lightweight. I don't need fancy editing features. Happy to work with raw html or markdown files.

I need some kind of permission management to hide some private wikis from the public, but otherwise I don't really care.

    Help with snippets?

My goal is to automatically close the environment while editing a tex file. There was an issue for vimtex asking for basically what I want to achieve. They achieve it using snippets as mentioned there.

The problem is, I have no idea how to set it up. I've never used snippets in nvim. I have vim-vsnip and cmp-vsnip installed as it was needed for another plugin to work. Is it possible to implement this using those?

It can be noted that in vimtex, an environment can be closed by typing ]] which is a mapping of vimtex-delim-close. I basically want to emulate the behavior in VS Code using LaTeX Workshop. It auto-closes the environment, adds an indented line in the middle, and moves the cursor there.

If anyone has any other ideas about doing this without snippets, that's welcome too.

Do you use a coffee subscription? Which one?

This post is mostly for me to look at alternatives. I currently subscribe to Trade. But recently I've been hearing about their bad practices like sending packages with wrong weight, or paying very little money to the roasters.

If you like your current subscription, please place a link so that others can check it out. If you don't, and want to switch, tell why so that I can avoid it too.

Is it okay to store coffee beans in old sealable bags?

For the last few months, I've been splitting a bag of coffee beans into 2-3 portions and freezing them. I've seen that it extends the freshness by a bit. Now, I've been storing them in older coffee bags (the standard sealable ones) since they take up less space than jars and also I'm just reusing something that would've gone to landfill/compost.

I do clean them of residues of older beans and don't use a bag more than 2 times since I get new bags whenever I buy beans anyway. Are there any health/quality issues that might arise from this that I should be aware of? Should I just store them in sealed glass jars instead?
