My pronouns are she/her. You can call me ScratchySoft or Scratchy. Not Soft though. That's weird.
I'd list what accounts I have on other platforms to discourage impersonation, but the character limit is too short.

Good question... Maybe, though I don't know much about old music or movies.

Maybe? But I can't imagine that would be particularly healthy for the site for legal reasons. I'm thinking maybe trying to do a biweekly to monthly feed of recently dumped ROMs and related media would be nice? Though admittedly I'm not sure how well I'd be able to keep up with doing that.

It's a wonder why people don't just start taking their encryption into their own hands. It's easier than ever with PGP, so I've heard.

Convenience isn't necessarily the only problem with a given service. Maybe their favorite movie got the "50 remasters of Star Wars" treatment over the years and the latest one doesn't look or sound that good, or the company behind it has shitty business practices like using death squads against South American union workers or something.

What to do with !retropirates?
I was made a moderator of [email protected] a while back, but now I'm not sure what to do with it. Direct links to newly dumped titles would be a violation of rule 3 (only reason I left the Grimace's Birthday post up is because the game was free in the first place so who cares). [email protected] exists, and it itself is already niche but more popular than [email protected]...
I'm not sure what to do with it that couldn't already be done in !piracy or [email protected]... Do y'all think there's a good place for it on here? What would be a good way to differentiate it from [email protected] and [email protected]?

So is this just going to be an I2P-based torrent tracker for ROMs?

I see... Is there already a retro gaming community on dbzer0? If not, maybe I could try reorienting the sub to be a more general retro gaming community? But that still doesn't solve the problem of tying it into the subject matter of the rest of the site without posting links discouraged under the site's policies (though I'm not sure how well-enforced that is)... Maybe discussing emulators and advancements in them as well as... Maybe information on new dumps bimonthly or something? Perhaps another issue is the fact that [email protected], already fairly niche on this site, is still the de facto retro piracy sub on here judging by how popular it is compared to [email protected].

Because I'd rather not get spyware.

Tribler is not Tor, and I know Tor doesn't work. That's why I asked if there's anything like Tor rather than just doing the stupid thing of using Tor immediately. I'll look into I2P.

I live in the US, so it is illegal here though not always enforced much, but a lot of trackers also encourage seeding for obvious reasons and it seems like poor form not to.

Sadly I am not in any private trackers. And while I know VPNs like ProtonVPN are fairly reliable, I'm hesitant to place much trust in them, nor do I have... Any income right now (things are a mess)...

switched from a client application to a web interface
uuuuuuugh, good to know

Tribler - Is it any good? If not, is there anything as private as Tor for torrents?
I am not in a place where I can afford a VPN (do not start suggesting cheap VPNs to me istg), and in addition, you have to place a lot of trust in the VPN. Tribler seems promising, except... For the giant disclaimer that's been on the site for years. That worries me. I am quite worried about getting scary letters from my ISP or something when torrenting.
Do not put yourself in danger. Our anonymity is not yet mature.
Tribler does not protect you against spooks and government agencies. We are a torrent client and aim to protect you against lawyer-based attacks and censorship. With help from many volunteers we are continuously evolving and improving.
Edit: Seems like there are a lot of issues below the surface as well... https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/19118584/10120234
And Lokinet, I2P, and GNUnet have their own massive problems... https://comment.ctrl.blog/discussion/tribler-onion-routed-bittorrent
ngl, kinda depressing that it's like this...
Edit 2: I misread the article a bi

Hey, uh... I'm one of the mods on [email protected]. I haven't been on in a while because... Well, I just haven't been able to figure out what to do with it outside of posting links, which is... Discouraged outside of the megathread, at least last I checked the rules.

Unfortunately, at least for me, people very frequently make it my problem when they don't understand (or don't care). Mainly my parents. And they wonder why I don't talk to them anymore.

Oh god, of course they are. Haven't checked on Microsoft News in a while, but the last time I did, they were promoting tons upon tons of transphobic propaganda.

I was referring to the Nicotine+ chat being ruined. I'm already on Beehaw, though it's not really about piracy-related stuff. It's nice though.
I'm not sure how much I'd even use Nicotine+, it doesn't have a lot of what I'm looking for. Just music. I tend to look for retro game stuff. I have all the No-Intro sets for older systems so I don't need stuff that's in those (except the private entries). It's hard to find stuff that isn't just in any No-Intro, GoodTools, or TOSEC set, unfortunately. I might use it to share stuff. Maybe eMule as well? I don't know. shrug

That's true. sigh It's just rather frustrating that it only takes a few to ruin things for so many...

My problem with Soulseek is that it only really has music. That's it. I'm more interested in stuff for retro game systems. Not just the stuff that's listed in No-Intro or some GoodSet, you can find those anywhere. I'm trying to find a site that has stuff that isn't just the same sets you see everywhere. But I can't find one.

Why don't the majority talk over the dickwads if they outnumber them? Why does it only take a few to mess everything up?

True, though I'm a bit worried about seeding requirements, and making sure my ISP and college don't complain.
There's also the matter of "how the heck do I figure out if a keygen or crack or whatever is a virus if a lot of antivirus software just screams at it for being a keygen or crack without checking it for malware nowadays?"
