Anyone here seen 'Warfare'? (new A24 Iraq war movie, dir Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza) Thoughts?
I haven't seen it, I've been looking for good reviews. The default thoughts are... Propaganda, classic film where Americans destroy a country and make a movie 20 years later about how bad their soldiers had it. Obviously it's got that part, but other than the ending I've heard about, is it really that propagandous?
Even if it's just a shallow 'war is bad' film

ON THIS DAaY 1995: Eric Cantona kung fu kicks a fascist football hooligan

Ok, it was yesterday... 25 January 1995:
Manchester United footballing legend Eric Cantona kung fu kicked a fascist football hooligan, Matthew Simmons, during a match against Crystal Palace. Simmons, who attended far-right National Front and British National Party rallies and has a raft of violent convictions including attacking a football coach who called him "Nazi scum", allegedly heckled Cantona as a "foreigner".
Cantona's maternal grandfather was from Barcelona, and fought against the forces of fascist general Francisco Franco during the Spanish civil war, before being forced to flee to France after the nationalist victory.
Years later appearing on the BBC, Cantona was asked what the highlight of his career was. He replied "When I did the kung fu kick on the hooligan... I think maybe it's like a dream for some, you know sometimes to kick these kind of people. So I did it for them. So they are happy."
At the press conference afterwards, he cryptically said:
"When the seagulls f
Ayyyy, lovely, thanks! Got it bookmarked now.
Purge away!

Oh yeah, nice, thanks.
Oh no! I was going to reply and check your recommendation out! I was just keeping it in my notification bank!
Ha, nice. I totally forgot there was loads of communities on here. I've seen all the far side stuff before but it's good to see them again. Thanks, good call.
How do you subscribe to it from hexbear though?

Looking for comics/cartoons like The Far Side Gallery, and other old school political comic strips.
I know far side isn't exactly political, but I'm an arts guy so I'll say that absurdism is an inherently political choice.
They don't have to be old school either, but since the form has mostly fallen out of favour, the golden era of the top quality stuff is in the past.
I just love reading funny little cartoons. I guess they were the precursor to memes. I don't even care if they're lib or right wing bullshit, I recently read a collection of Pat Oliphant's work, and even though most of it wasn't very politically accurate, nor was it particularly funny, it was still enjoyed ironically.
Any picks?

Using an old 'gravity slate train' and an engine, he uses the tracks in the timetabled trains downtime. What a time to be alive. And gravity trains too: https://youtu.be/-A7sZVgct3E

Hilarious. Stacey Vint you absolute dickhead.
I mean seriously let's just think about it for a second - what did she expect? You have to be a serious fucking moron to even attempt this.
You're an unfit untrained 34 year old woman, whipped up into such a racist fury, that you attempt some shit straight off the battlefields of Carthage, except you're essentially riding the pig you set on fire and running into a horde of elephants.
Any of you who've been at a protest/riot and got up close to riot cops - let's be real - they are big scary bastards. I don't know where they find these apes but they're fucking massive and have full permission from the state to smash your face in.
Like, I sometimes see a street copper and think... 'I'm a big guy, I've done combat and contact sports, I think if that copper wanted to nick me he'd need a couple of mates to shepherd me in and get me down...' But when the riot cop brigade comes marching out I think 'fuck me, am i seriously about to get into

Ah, yeah. I don't know the terminology. I'll change it to threadbare My level of tech awareness is like... my friends think I know stuff but actually I'm just great at taking a punt and watching tutorials.
Anyway, yeah, I changed the old one to a nifty NVME and now it runs like a dream.
Currently I'm using Zorin OS Alite - do you really think I should go to mint or Ubuntu before I start settling in? My initial reaction to Zorin is that I'm satisfied with it, but if it's not as reliable as mint then maybe I should just start again?
Yep, that's what I did. Super fast now.
Ah, mines the one with the m.2 SSD slot (or something like that) - I replaced it with a nice fast one for £30 and it's running like a dream. Much faster than it was before.
Crucial P3 500GB M.2 PCIe Gen3 NVMe Internal SSD - Up to 3500MB/s - CT500P3SSD8
You should be able to replace the HDD with one of the bigger SSD's though? Isn't the bracket for it built in?
But surely one for lower end/older machines will be as barebones as possible?
No gaming, hopefully. Perhaps hearthstone if I succumb to it.
Oh, true yeah. Oh well, too late now. I'll keep it mind if I want to go back to windows.
Interesting. Going to mull over the options on my walk to the shops to get a USB. Thanks.
Perfect, I'll take your word for it. Unless someone comes in here and convinces me otherwise.
Thanks!

Looking for a good Linux to install on a slow 2019 machine. Relative beginner with Linux.
Hello! My old laptops hard drive packed it in, so I got a new one and now need to flash drive an operating system on it. I think this is my time to give Linux a proper go. I tried it before for my gaming PC but switched for a cracked Windows key because I was young and not bothered to learn.
Well, now is my chance to give it another go. I'm looking for a Linux optimised for performance on an HP 255 G7. Threadbare, but not so bare that it'll require me to do a load of complicated stuff to do the basics. I'll just be using it for YouTube and Google docs really. Any help/advice/orders are appreciated.
Thanks!
