  • Threema.ch already do this. Maybe that’s the answer?

  • I wonder what that looks like fleshed out a little, though. Is that a mandatory or voluntary payment? And by paying for what they use is that per message or per month like a subscription?

  • But do we trust entities that depend on our governments for funding? It could be argued that they’re fundamentally compromised.

  • Maybe within whatever bubble this article is aimed at, but I think it will be the vast minority who get that. But, we should push for it all around the world.

  • Upvoted bc VC eventually means enshittifiication. But with xz getting back-doored recently, what is the middle ground that keeps these things sustainable financially and operationally?

  • The world appear in the aggregator but when I searched specifically for one in particular, I wasn’t found. Just now it works so I don’t know what changed. Thanks for pointing that out, I wouldn’t have tried again.

What is the practical difference between the main instances of kbin and mbin, from a users perspective?

When spam started to become overwhelming here I signed up to the largest mbin instance, Fedia.io. On one hand it runs well and isn't overrun with spam posts. On the other, it's missing some communities that are active on kbin.social.

It also doesn't have a meta or askmbin type of community, like kbin does.

Are there any other differences I should consider before deciding which of the two to drop?

Edit: I also got a server error when I posted this and thought my post had been lost. Phew! This doesn't happen on Fedia.io.

  • For those with the skills, yes. But it would be good to facilitate less technical people to use the platform too.

Will it be possible at some point to have private magazines?

Just wondering if local communities could use kbin that way.

  • The problem is that we can’t leave. We’ve requested for our accounts to be deleted a long time ago. It’s not our fault that we’re still waiting.

  • The export process says it has copied subscriptions to the clipboard, but when I paste I just get the code I had pasted in to the browser console. I'm using Safari on macOS.

It's not a big deal. I don't mind starting from scratch.

  • I’ve been waiting for my account deletion request to be accepted for a while now. Maybe a few weeks.

I like Kbin in theory, but the spam is too distracting for me. I’m not in a position to volunteer either.

  • Permanently Deleted

  • @MajorHavoc

@SLaSZT are there any instances in the EU?

  • I spend more time blocking spammers than anything else. I’m sure it will improve once this issue gets more attention, but for now I think I’ll take a break from this site.

  • I’m not knowledgeable either but that all makes sense.

Which is better for the environment, TV stations or streaming platforms?

I’m just thinking if the energy use that data centres and streaming platforms require, and the climate crisis. Would one be significantly better than the other in terms of energy use?

  • Does that third also take into account any differences in manufacturing them? In other words, the entire lifecycle.

  • Some very informative and leading articles pop up from that site. I learned a lot about indigenous issues (inflicted by settlers) there. Was really surprised given the associations I have with the brand.

  • I don’t understand how the eye movement camera fits in to the experiment. I was wondering if any stories, even audiobooks and TV series have the same effect but I’m no clearer from reading the article.

  • It is. I’d love to see it without the text too.

  • Best skin I’ve seen on any social site. Nice job.

VPN and server on same machine? (VPN makes server inaccessible to public)

I run a web server (lighttpd) to serve a few pages to the world. I've installed the nordvpn client and when I run it two expected things happen:

    1. I lose my SSH connection to the machine, and
    2. My website becomes inaccessible to the public

Is it possible to run the VPN and still maintain the SSH connection on the local net and the web server connection on the internet?

Can't upload images on Firefox or Safari

When I'm on Firefox, I can attach an image to a "Photo" post, but the upload button doesn't do anything. On Safari, I can't even attach the image in the first place.

How is everyone else getting around this (or is it a universal problem)?

Kung Fury is due for release in November 2023. Is there an official trailer for it?

Any video on YouTube claiming to be a trailer isn’t. I know it’ll be a great movie but curious to see if there is a trailer.

Where can I enter my daily/weekly food consumption and get information on what nutrition I am deficient in?

Everything seems to have an RDA associated with it (Recommended Daily Allowance), so I imagine that something like this exists. I'm not interested in weight gain/loss though, purely nutrition. I'm a light eater and I'm sure I could do with supplements or dietary modification.

Linux & Maildir: What's a simple way to move messages from the Cron Daemon out of the inbox for safe keeping? They're causing clutter.

My user account on linux gets some Cron Jobs among mail from humans. I don't want to see the cron messages.

How can I script it so they are moved out of the "inbox" view (for example, on Squirrel Mail or my mobile client)?

I can grep for root@<domain> (Cron Daemon) to find the files that are emails from Cron. But I don't know how to actually process them from here.

Edit: they are using dovecot here, in case that makes a difference. Messages appear as files in the format:
    1696857026.V902I580559fM559719.<domain>.de:2,

Edit 2: I have learned that the trailing S can be appended to a filename to mark it as read (or Seen), so I just need to know how to move it from the inbox to somewhere safe now.

Help running Win98SE in UTM virtual machine (for old games)

Win98SE is getting stuck at the boot screen after installation. I don't personally see anything in the logs that indicates what the issue may be, but I'm a novice anyway.

Does anyone have settings they can share, in case I'm not doing something right. This is the tutorial I'm following: https://jensd.be/1640/windows/run-windows-98-se-on-a-modern-mac-with-m1

Reccomend applications that don't need a display server?

I accidentally found out that mpv can play videos from the TTY, meaning I don't have to log in to a graphical session. It even has a scaled OSD, unlike anything I've seen in a terminal UI.

Obviously there are plenty of terminal applications that work in a TTY, (edit) intext-mode or using ncurses (/edit), but are there any others like mpv that aren't strictly terminal apps but don't require a display server (maybe because they do the job themselves)?

Musicians of Kbin: if I want to play a melody in the key of A flat, what other keys are compatible when choosing a whistle that isn’t tunable?

I’m used to be able to just buy a tin whistle in D and that’s compatible with what all the schools teach kids, but I’ve spent ages searching for a solution to this one and I still don’t know what I need exactly.

The song / melody are in Ab.

Is it possible to collapse comments under Kbin posts? I can’t seem to do it, at least on mobile.

I’m sure I’ve seen comments indicating that people can do this.

    HTTP only search engine?

I have a vintage computer from the late 80s that is way too slow with SSL. Google is the only search engine I know of that doesn't automatically switch to SSL. I've tried:
    startpage.com
    Ecosia.org
    DuckDuckGo.com

Only duckduckgo stays with http when I specify it, but it's very slow loading what appears to be excessive JS (for my system, at least).

    Thanks!

Recommend a GUI client for git?

I was looking at video reviews of git GUI clients. The best ones are pricey and we are two people occasionally editing some webpages for our business website. It’s hosted on GitLab Pages.

Can anyone recommend something straightforward? I’ll be sticking to the terminal but my colleague is new to code repositories.

Git GUI is free, but looks terrible IMO. Sublime have a nice one and it’s not subscription based, but is expensive. We are both on Mac usually.

Another alternative I considered was showing them the three terminal commands I use mainly (add, commit and push) and then let them edit from the file manager itself. But because they’ll be doing this so rarely, it might be easy to forget.

Edit: I’ve settled on a few to try out: sourcetree, fork, gitup and the one by Sublime. The conversation doesn’t have to end there, but thanks for the help. So many great answers here :)

    Kavita reader or Calibre-web?

Can anyone who has experience with both share a recommendation? I’m interested in the user side of things for ebooks (no comics) but also ease of installation and maintenance.

I currently use Calibre-web and while it runs well, I find it cumbersome to organize my books through it.

Edit: great responses, thank you. I do like the idea of just having the epubs in a folder and share those but at least on my setup, the desktop Calibrw app doesn’t open libraries that are mounted from remote locations. They also advise against it.

So for now I guess it’s a choice between a local folder or calibre -web
