  • I remember when I Ran by Flock of Seagulls was randomly playing in my head so I decided to listen to it. YouTube took that as me finding a new favourite band. I mostly listen to industrial metal.

  • Used to be that when a play ended, the audience would rush the stage to pat the backs of the actors to show appreciation. After the Great Audience Stampede of 1733, they made a rule to not rush the stage and just use the other hand as a substitute of the actors' backs. That rule became the social norm.

What does "legitimate interest" mean in cookie settings?

When going through the cookie settings for a website or an app, some of the cookies are marked as "legitimate interest". What exactly does that mean?

    Looking for Overwatch alternatives

TL;DR: Any recommendations for a game like Overwatch that actually functions? XDefiant was promising, but it doesn't have "roles" that don't require shooting, so my friend got frustrated.

As it turns out, it is actually possible to make friends as an adult. Who knew?

She likes MOBAs and such, and I mostly go for shooters so Overwatch was an obvious choice.

The gameplay is fun, and it gives us both something we enjoy, but there are some glaring issues that are best described by just describing my own experience in the game.

First off, the game requires you to win 50 matches in quick play before you're allowed in ranked. With both of us working full-time, having spouses and whatnot, and dealing with 3 random teammates, that took forever.

I finally got to ranked, she already had a rank. The game "predicted" my rank to be basically the same as hers. Even so, all that's available are "wide matches". Average wait time is between 20-30 minutes.

So we started a co-op campaign in Baldur'

  • Not a thumbs up, it was a guideline back in the day that if the mushroom cloud was smaller than the thumb of your outstretched arm, you were not in immediate danger. Or something along those lines. Pedantic needs fulfilled.

  • Late to the party, but if you do turn your bottom fans around, remember to keep the desk/floor/whatever your PC is on clean. We can all pretend to actually clean the bottom filters regularly, but we know that's not true and the filter will turn into a wall in a few weeks. Also why my only intakes are on the front where the filter is just magnetic.

Can you separate the artist as a person from the music?

For example, I personally can't listen to Guns and Roses without immediately thinking "that Axl sure is an asshole", and that sours the entire experience.

  • Holy hell, I learned something today. Might be a matter of a language barrier, since in my native language the word "Satanism" by definition refers to LaVeyan Satanism, and there's a distinct word for Satan's/Devil's worshippers. No idea how that happened.

  • You're mixing things up. Satanism never believed in literal Satan, that'd be Satan's /Devil's Worshippers, a completely different group of people. "Satanism" was the word used by the ignorant western (mostly US) media during the "Satanic panic" during the '80s-'90s, and it stuck. The Satanic Bible, to which your "modern atheist Satanism" refers to, was written in '69. Nothing to do with literal Satan.

YSK: Most "Energy Optimization Services" for buildings are scams.

I've been working as an automation technician for around 5 years now, and I've come across several services that promise a substantial improvement in energy efficiency when it comes to heating, especially involving district heating with water. Most of these are subscription services.

While they usually quote numbers that are based in reality, the way they are accomplished is often covered in technical jargon and straight up BS that a person without experience won't be able to understand and so believes the seller.

That's where this post comes in.

All that the impressive sounding, weather pattern considering, ultra-futuristic solution really does is take the existing setpoint for the heating system and lowers it by ≈2°C. That's it. One line of code. Takes any competent professional 5 minutes to implement. What's worse, some systems are laid on top of the old one, with a higher priority. Meaning that you need a specialist provided by the "optimization" company to adjust the heating. S

A way to automatically apply a colour profile when HDR is enabled?

I have an Asus PG27AQDM OLED monitor, and the out-of-the-box HDR experience is, well, atrocious. I can make it look better, almost perfect, by messing around with Nvidia control panel, but those settings obviously look awful with HDR disabled. So, is there a way to automatically apply different profiles according to the colour space being used?

    Can't log in with anything

So I've had this account for 21 days, and the only way I have managed to log in was with "forgot password" and resetting it each time using Firefox. I have also tried with mobile apps, i.e. Jerboa, Liftoff and Connect. Jerboa tells me that the login is incorrect, the others say that my email hasn't been verified. The verification email (screenshot included) is just a blank page with the words "Verify Email", nothing clickable. Can I get a new verification email somehow, or is there something else I can do?
