  • This is incredible, I think this is my new favorite of mine

I don't remember if I already asked this but do you have a mastodon or pixelfed or anything where I could follow you? Your art is really beautiful

  • not the person you replied to, but I wish someone had told me that rather than just downvoting me, that's helpful to know about and I only found out cause I came to try dig though the thread to see if there were clues as to why folks were so unhappy with my mentioning it 😅

Not everyone knows or keeps up with every blemish on a project's record

  • I don't use or care that much about vertical tabs, and it seems complicated how big if a deal this actually is, but florp might be worth taking a look at if you're not already familiar with it

I don't know a ton about it but I think it has a similar kind of niche and is more vertical tab focused

  • I didn't know that context about the guy who made the video, I've only seen his video about zen and his video about firefox, at first I thought you meant the commenter- thank you for the additional info, I don't exist much in dev spaces or follow what happens there and wouldn't have know he had baggage had you not mentioned it

I think the video contains enough helpful info about the gecko engine regardless of the guys trustworthiness, but I can definitely understand not taking his word at face value

The comments provide a lot of additional info, like that he gave credit to Samsung browser for adding features before firefox when it's chromium based, so the video isn't without its issues, but I still gained a lot of understanding of firefox's technical shortcomings from the specific examples provided. I was really only aware of user facing feature or ux issues

Regardless, hope you have a good one :)

  • Sorry for the late reply, I wish I had more but I think the only specific time I can remember is this comment on a video discussing Firefox's issues (its a pretty good video, even if I don't agree with every take in it)

    https://youtube.com/watch?v=mmjUlFIaNLE&lc=Ugxh4SDBv3MmwdHyb7h4AaABAg

Edit: wasn't sure if the link would open the comment correctly so I figured I'd take a screenshot

Its one of the top comments and its loved by the video creator so it shouldn't be hard to find if the link doesn't work right

  • Nah, you're all good, this has been a lovely conversion and I've appreciated your extra info :)

I hope you have a good day my friend 😊

  • I'm sad there are so few options for headphone jacks and/or small phones. I went with a zenfone 10 because it and xperia devices seemed like the only options, and the Zenfone seemed to suit my needs better, but it means I'll have to wait to try any custom ROMs.

And unfortunately, I'm still hoping to make this phone last a long time. We'll see how long I can keep it going

  • Oof... I don't find that as long or intense of a pattern as with brave but the behaviour to reach out and repeatedly bug the guy about his small blog post reflects strangely and poorly on his character :/ I had no idea kagi kinda came with baggage as well.

And yeah, it definitely is. Thats part of why I try really hard not to let perfect be the enemy of good. There is no perfect, and I still want to be involved in good where I can, to the extent that there is good available.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share a ton of additional context. I often have a hard time keeping in the loop about things and if I'm going to use imperfect things because I think they're better than the alternative, then I want to at least pay attention to and understand their imperfections

  • Thank you!

And yeah the fact that brave sucks so god damn much is frustrating. Brave is the best independent search engine with their own index (of the free options) in my opinion. At some point I need to try searx and kagi, but I prefer an independent engine rather than a meta search engine, and am broke as fuck 😅

  • If I understand correctly they're actually not directly a Mozilla project or something anymore. They're loosely connected, but not actually run by Mozilla.

  • Wasn't sure if there were better places to post this, feel free to cross-post if you know other fitting communities :)

Thunderbird "won't be adopting the firefox terms of use"

Thought this was interesting and worth knowing about :)

  • They recently announced terms of service that they (I think?) Partially walked back. But honestly it's a longer term issue-

Mozilla is dependent on Google giving them lots of money to be the default Firefox search engine, and anti-monopoly rulings in Europe may mean Google has to stop doing that, which would really jeopardize Mozilla's financial sustainability

The gecko engine is way behind on web standards, and while it generally gets the job done for average users, I've learned recently lots of devs don't test their sites with it or support it not just because it's a minority browser, but because it doesn't support a lot of stuff and is hard to work with.

Mozilla seems to believe their path forward financially is AI features. Which are very unpopular with a lot of the folks who follow Mozilla, even if implemented thoughtful, and seems like a dubious financial future given even huge companies like openai are struggling to make ai financially self sustaining.

Add to it the privacy preserving ad tracking stuff they wanted as an alternative to cookies a while back, and the picture doesn't really get better

All of these are small things. The compatibility with web standards isn't the end of the world for most users. A big bug was/is that firefox rendered gradients horrendously for like 12 years or something with the bug reports just sitting there, but most Foss nerds who use firefox don't super care if a website's gradient looks crappy. The features that chrome has but Firefox doesn't aren't dealbreakers for most users. The privacy preserving trackers or whatever they were called seemed at least relatively thoughtfully implemented from a privacy standpoint. AI could hypothetically be done in a way that isn't totally shitty, and maybe possibly they could build a financial future out of it. The terms of service debacle could stop here and not devolve into actual enshitification.

But it all culminates together in feeling like mozilla is out of touch with their core audience and has no real viable plan for staying afloat, sans google paying them shitloads of money to be the default browser engine. :/

  • While I do think the point about forking is true, it is worth acknowledging that the gecko engine is
    a) very behind other browsers in terms of implemented functionality and standards, and
    b) I've seen devs say on multiple occasions that because of the wide range of platforms it has officially supported over time (or other reasons), the codebase has become very hard to work with and apparently it's really hard to add new standards to it

  • That definitely adds a bit more context still. Thank you for the additional information.

I don't know much about either of the first two people, but I do know lunduke and think he's gross (if you have context on the first two you're welcome to share but no obligation to of course :)

Though, I'm also a fan of futo and Louis Rossman. I try to air on the side of being able to appreciate people doing good work even if I don't agree with everything they do or think. People come from different backgrounds and not everyone will see the world the way I do, or be sensitive to the pain caused by the issues that affect me personally 🤷‍♂️

  • True, but I'm not one to let perfect be the enemy of good.

  • I wasn't aware of anything along those lines, but reading through the whole thread of discussion was interesting.

Things seem ambiguous currently I'll have to keep an eye on that issue, I appreciate you mentioning it

  • I definitely agree. They feel deeply confused about their audience and like they perpetually flounder trying to find a sustainable direction or future :/

  • Aw, fuck yeah! I'm glad you mentioned it :)

  • Is that in the video or just your hope? If that's the case I missed it, and that would be super exciting!

  • Lemme know what you think, especially about servo! I don't know much about them!

Monthly update on the FOSS "Ladybird" browser engine

Update was from 3 days ago, I'm really hopeful ladybird could be a future browser option to help break the stranglehold chrome has over the market, while Mozilla is struggling to find meaningful direction.

It seems like an exciting project with monthly progress updates :) they keep chipping away at compatibility.

    The best streaming service :)

    Stolen from mastodon

Their caption "look, it's all my favorite streaming services on one platform!" Is probably better than mine lol

Brakeys made another Godot tutorial- this time for 3D games

Was really excited to see this and was surprised to find it hadn't already been posted so I figured I'd share ☺️

What new drizzle season weapons or kits are y'all enjoying most? What modes are you playing them in, and what's your experience been like?

I've been delighted with dread wringer (though I would love to have a functioning special, pls for the love of god Nintendo). And I play a lot of comp and have really enjoyed that its more flexible for a variety of modes than my other main front line weapon, range blaster, which is only particularly strong on tower control.

I'm really proud, in the first few days of the season I got dread wringer to 607th x rank placement on the leaderboards for tower control, which is higher than I've ever been, I was super proud 🥺.

I think I'm also grateful to have a front line weapon I really like that can paint now, range blaster is garbage at paint lol, but dread wringer has me pretty often getting highest turf covered for a match!

Heavy edit seems busted strong, but I did a really bad job of playing it, I think I was just playing with the wrong mindset about how to position and control space. Its a cool weapon though! (But also it desperately needs at least a little nerfing lol, its sooo str

How do folks feel about the new stages, shipshape and crableg?

So far I've really enjoyed both, but I especially loved crableg capital on zones. The verticality that the bridges over mid add was so much fun! Tower control for crableg was also a good time, but took me a minute to kinda figure out. I enjoy that the tower stops at their plat making it easy to push up and try to take their platform when pushing

Shipshape for clams was fun (playing around mid was a blast) but the whole left path to the basket being grates made it pretty frustrating to try and get their basket open, with only one safe path most weapons can take
