Big fan of SBC gaming, open source engine recreations/source ports, gaming in general, alternative operating systems, and all things modding.
Trying to post and comment often in an effort to add to Lemmy's growth.

Mount Your Friends is an Xbox 360 era go-to for me. Very easy to get into and gets people competitive (in a good way). The only downside is it's probably not the most appropriate game to play with kids for your situation

Not the best to any degree but just wanted to shout out the Pimps at Sea mod for Halo MCC that adds boats

Is Black Flag good to play if you don't like or follow the over arching story of Assassins Creed?
I felt like it kind of pulled me out of other games in the series

Another one that came to mind is TF2. I like Titanfall 2 more than Team Fortress 2 but I associate the acronym with Team Fortress 2.

I wish there was an option to turn off link-only posts. At least have something in the body of the post. Maybe a quote or a TLDR. Otherwise it just feels like a bot posting.

I am not a fan. I don't like link dumps. It doesn't create a discussion and the article or whatever is being relayed might be total shit and there could be better or more direct sources.
If I saw a Hackaday article about a neat project on GitHub I wouldn't just post the article with the original title. I would probably link the GitHub page and in the body of the post link the article with a quote and maybe post similar projects in case people are interested.
I specifically dislike the bots that repost content from Reddit. The communities they post to feel fake and end up receiving so many posts actual Lemmy users posting to them get washed away in the flood.
It's not a big deal for some communities (ex. Nature photos) but doesn't make sense for discussion focused ones.
I block those bots

What acronyms are you annoyed to see take on other meanings?
I'm running into this more and more with BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) and Bungo Stray Dogs.
I was wondering if anyone else has run into anything similar?

Is anyone surprised by this? I feel like similar things have happened in the past with back breeding

I've done this a few times in different Civilizations games to see how the computer would react to things like an abundance of gold or over powered for the current turn units.
A lot of the time it was underwhelming with them not really utilizing what was given to them or switching up their strategy. With gold they wouldn't buy units or tiles and would still demand gold during trades or for peace for example.

On Bedrock you can just edit a text file to increase the loaded distance. I feel like there's probably something similar for Java

I was thinking earlier today what Legate Lanius would have thought seeing the Courier use every single chem in his inventory before talking to him.

If I'm making a drop trap in Minecraft for items does it matter if the fall kills them?
I don't think it makes a difference unless I want to use a fortune enchanted sword. Is this correct?

It feels a bit like Ali Express pricing with games being listed as $100 but being discounted year round for 50% off to give consumers the illusion of getting a deal.
It also seems like a lot of titles don't go down in price as they age as often as they used to.

I wonder if they would reuse the scraps similar to how Lego reuses defective bricks

Maybe it has to do with how the card is setup. For example if the phone believes it's a portable device versus something for internal storage it might not provide the option in case someone encrypts the card not realizing they will need decryption software on other devices they want to use it on.

I believe they are sold in the same size box as any other soap so I don't think transportation would really matter.

Yeah. "Dairy products" and ice cream is an example I feel like more people are aware of.
That was what I was getting at. From what I've read online Dove's use of synthetic detergent and claims of moisturizing are reasons why it can't be labelled as soap under the FDA

Thanks for the reply.
Why isn’t more soap oval? Economics. It’s far more expensive to mold mass-market soap in round shapes. It’s dramatically cheaper to make it square.
Would it really be that expensive?
From my understanding soap is usually pushed into some kind of oval plate to be trimmed before being pushed again into a press that shapes and stamps it simultaneously. If a company already needed a custom mold for a stamped label would the shape make much of a difference? Other than that I think the only alteration would be the plate the soap is pushed through. At a large scale the expenses related to not being able to use more common parts might add up I guess.
This does make me wonder how diverse large scale soap manufacturing equipment is. Maybe there is an industry-standard bar of soap and I've never noticed how similar different bars of soap are in shape to each other.

Does Dove hold a copyright on the shape of their soap?

This is the kind of bar of soap I am talking about. It's kind of a contoured oval.
I know there are copyrights on soap shapes. I've read several soap shape patents like Theodore G Brown's hollow bar of soap designed to contain slivers of old soap and Douglas Lee's helical soap.
I've tried to go through Conopco Inc's list of patents (the trademark holder for Dove) but I can't seem to find much. They also own a plethora of other companies though so it's been challenging to swift through.
On that note I also looked for subsidiaries of Unilever (they own Dove) to see if any of them make similarly shaped bars of soap but it doesn't seem like it. Brands of soap outside of Unilever such as Irish Spring (owned by Colgate-Palmolive) do sell contoured/"dog bone" soap but I don't recall seeing any that match Dove's design.
I did find a book called Chemic

I wonder if they will ever release a definitive edition of The Sims 3 or 4. Even with a 90% discount the number of DLCs keep complete versions of the game rather expensive.

Tangentially related but I was browsing the list of Steam curators and I was surprised by how many of them are dedicated to discouraging people from buying games from specific countries.

That's how I ended up with so many games in my backlog

Are you looking for a percentage amount or a dollar amount? Which would seem more appealing?

The spring Steam sale is happening right now. What games do you want to play but won't buy despite a deep discount and why?
Here's some on my list:
- Red Dead Redemption 2 - I do not want to deal with the Rockstar Games launcher.
- Tom Clancy's Breakpoint - The game's add-on packs feel like Ubisoft is trying to nickel and dime gamers who would instinctively buy the GOTY equivalent of a title. I do not want to deal with a Ubisoft launcher or account.
- Zombi - According to the Steam reviews it required a Uplay login to validate the game before you play and that version of the Ubisoft service no longer exists. This seems to have been rectified but I still don't trust it and don't want to go through the refund process if it hasn't.
- Skyrim VR - I've already bought too many copies of Skyrim.
A bit of a "this is why I pirate" thread but more targeted at individual games.
If you want to get some extra use out of your Vita check out the Steam curator "Also on Ps Vita". They'll inform you if a game was officially released on the Vita/PSP or if a fan port exists

Games that are also available on the Ps Vita, including Unofficial Ports, PSP games (Adrenaline), remakes and remasters. Join the associated group to make recommendations or corrections. Vita means Life!

What games/applications would you recommend that work well with just a headset tethered to a PC?

I'm using a PSVR headset with iVRy but I haven't gotten controller tracking working. I'm wondering what games or applications I can use in the meantime while I work on this.
If I recall Trover Saves the Universe has what I'm looking for where you can use the headset and a typical game controller.
EmuVR has controller support. So does VorpX but I don't know if motion controls are needed for accessing menus and what not. I imagine Skybox would be fine.
I've tried searching Steam for controller friendly + VR but I am not sure how many games are coming up because they have a full VR mode that would require motion controllers. It seems like several driving and flight simulator games would work just fine in this configuration.

Any recommendations on getting my PSVR working on Windows? I have PS Move controllers, Rift S controllers, a PS4 camera, a webcam, and an Xbox 360 Kinect.
So far I have my original PSVR headset connected to my PC and I'm using the premium version of iVRy. This allows me to use the actual headset but I don't have any body/control.
I believe the PS Move controllers can be used if I pair them with Bluetooth and using "iVRy PSMoveServiceEx for SteamVR on Steam" but I think this gives me button input, momentum, and rotational support. No tracking.
I own both Xbox 360 Kinect and PS4 camera to USB adapters. It seems like both work with Driver4VR but a lot of the setup videos are dated. Using the PS4 camera configuration option causes the application to crash and the UI has changed for example.
K2VR, now known as Amethyst, says it can do lower body tracking but people seem to recommend it for overall tracking.
iVRy seems to recommend dual PlayStation Eye cameras which I do not have.
Right now I have everything setup through iVRy and I believe I have Amethyst setup correctly. My test game was Arizona Sunshine and my hands are appear

What video game franchises do you not need to start from the very beginning to enjoy? What would you recommend as the entry point into your favorite series?
I'll start by saying I had a bit of trouble wording the title but I'll try to elaborate on it. I find it can be a bit daunting at times figuring out what a decent entry point is in a series of video games without searching online first. Sometimes there will be ten games released across three different generation of consoles with reboots, prequels, and remasters and you can feel a bit left out of the loop if you start with the most recent release.
I'm wondering where people would recommend starting in other popular series like Nier, Final Fantasy, Armored Core, Ace Combat, Assassins Creed, Metal Gear, Metroid, Resident Evil, and so on.
It might make for a fun bit of Friday discussion and encourage some people to try out some new games.
Here's my example:
With the Fallout series I'd say you could easily start with any game because you have a new protagonist each time and a lot of the lore is reintroduced. The exception being Fallout 2 because it feels a bit more like a direct

VR headsets remind me a lot of all the feature phone e-waste
Between Microsoft killing Windows Mixed Reality in November 2026, the lack of replacement parts for things like the Rift S's cable and PSVR 2 replacement controllers, and Meta's quick discontinuation of the Quest Pro and pushing software updates that cause issues with legacy headsets it feels like most headsets are destined to quickly become paperweights.
The situation reminds me a lot of feature phones with their proprietary connectors, how useless they are without a cellular network, and the lack of a strong modding community.
Things do seem to be getting better, I haven't heard a lot of complaints about the Valve Index, but it's a bit disappointing to see so many posts and comments talking about how much potential different headsets had.

What movies are good to watch while working out?
Might seem like a silly question but I'm curious.
Maybe a movie with a lot of action or decent soundtrack for example

What games did you find confusing to buy?

Call me lazy if you want but I don't think someone should need to look up a guide on how to buy a video game without feeling scammed. I feel like I've been seeing this more and more lately with abstractly named tiered bundles, complete editions that don't contain everything, and remasters of games that feel like they should have been updates.
I've listed a few examples below but can you think of any others?
Examples:
The photo I attached is a buying guide for Hitman 3. A game that still confuses me. For those that don't know Hitman 1 and 2 can be played in Hitman 3 but the game is sold in bundles. I believe part one contains missions from the first game but the standard edition, the next level up, does not contain all the levels for Hitman 2 but does have all the levels for Hitman 3. The deluxe edition has all of Hitman 2 and a good chunk of the small DLC like cosmetics and challenge missions but not all of them.
Before Hitman 3 was rebranded as World of Assassinati

Bluetooth audio mixers aren't a thing right? If so, how could I create one?
To be clear I know what multipoint is and it's not what I am looking for. I don't want to toggle between two audio sources. I want to combine several various audio sources into one set of headphones. I searched online for this and a lot of people were asking why someone would want to do this. It's so I can do things like play Elden Ring on my Steam Deck and listen to a podcast on my phone. Zoomer stuff.
One way I'm pretty sure I can do this is with Bluetooth audio receivers, a X in 1 out audio mixer, a USB hub and power source, and a Bluetooth audio transmitter.
I am not sure if using the same cheap audio receivers would cause issues or what kind of latency that would produce. Given how many people use Bluetooth headphones these days and the existence of Bluetooth DACs I thought something would exist (even if it was limited to a niche Tindie product). Ideally something that makes the pairing process easier than using screenless audio receivers and is a bit more portable.
I would ap

What are the odds of getting salmonella when eating raw poultry products?
Disclaimer: I haven't eaten raw chicken. Not looking for Reddit quips telling me to go to an emergency room.
Was just wondering if salmonella is pretty much guaranteed when eating raw chicken or if it's something like 50/50 and an easy preventative measure like throwing out expired/damaged cans of food or washing fruits and vegetables before you eat them. I feel like I've seen a lot of people in TV shows and movies eating raw eggs.

Oculus Rift S not working; cannot complete setup process. Says "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" and "Rift USB Hub" in Device Manager. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
The lead up:
It was working a couple months ago. The headset was just sitting on a stand with the cable loosely looped back and forth in like usual so I'm hoping it's not a cable issue.
I decided to play around with it today and the Meta Quest software updated automatically and after that I was getting weird disconnect messages, a black screen, and static. Now I am getting no signs of life from the headset in terms of LEDs or other lights; only chimes that something is being connected and disconnected to my computer.
I previously had issues getting my Rift S headset to work likely due to some kind of power related issue on my old PC. A couple months ago it would work fine with no issues.
Most posts seem related to "Port Reset Failed" errors.
My troubleshooting steps so far have been:
- I swapped around the DisplayPort and USB connection (USB 3.2 and with a PCI-E USB expansion card) and reinserted the connector on the headset
- I went into Device Manager and uninsta

Does anyone know why WiiUDownloader would be consistently freezing indefinitely while downloading/decrypting games?
It appears like it's recommended over WiiU USB Helper and I would like to give it a go (considering I can't get the title keys section in Wii USB Helper to work anymore) but WiiUDownloader is freezing anywhere from two to ten minutes into downloading or decrypting games. It doesn't appear to be consistently at the same spot or with the same game. I've only tried it on the one computer running Windows 11 but it should have more than sufficient specs.
I've searched /r/ROMs and the only posts that had responses and weren't snarky comments telling people to search the megathread or another community seem to say different versions, connecting to a different network, or repeated attempts are the possible solutions. I'm wondering if anyone has come across a more consistent solution before I resort to downloading directing from the Internet Archive and decrypting the games myself or trying to navigate their Discord channel.

Which Home Alone kid do you think could fend off the most chimpanzees?
How many do you think they could take on in a single wave?
The rules being either one has to die and the kid has agroed the chimpanzees. The child is in their house and has the same resources and prep time.
Bonus: here is the Wikipedia page about the Gombe Chimpanzee War.

What is the origin of aliens looking like humans? Why and when did it become the norm?
I'm wondering if it's pseudo religious with humans being created in God's image (Ancient Aliens stuff), the human-centric idea that intelligent life must resemble us, it being easy to make costumes for movies and TV when all you need to do is paint someone's skin, or if SciFi writers were going for the uncanny valley effect for example.

What games are you nostalgic towards but wouldn't go back and play?
The first game that comes to mind for me is Civilizations 4. I've probably spent hundreds of hours playing but after getting used to 5 and 6 I have a really hard time going back. Going back and forth between 5 and 6 I need to rethink some strategies but with 4 I feel like I need to rethink everything. I don't know if it's because of the tech tree layout in combination with the civics system, things like unit stacking, or maybe just a bunch of little things but it takes me a while to readjust.

Does the ROCKNIX CFW have an option to automatically boot into a game?
ROCKNIX is a continuation of JELOS and I have it installed on my RGB30 because ArkOS wasn't letting me enable WiFi. I want to use it as a dedicated PICO-8 machine and have it boot automatically into Splore, the PICO-8 cartridge browser, but I can't seem to find the setting to do this. Which seems strange considering how many modern firmwares have this.
I'm starting to think ROCKNIX doesn't have an option for this. I've clicked around the settings but haven't come across anything. I'd like appreciate it if someone could confirm my suspicion.
