  • Apple is the safer alternative vs. anything Google

Not really. Research has demonstrated that iOS and Android send very similar types of data even when users explicitly request to opt out. Apple was even so arrogant as to not bother responding to the authors of this paper when they reached out for comment (unlike Google which did reply).

    https://www.scss.tcd.ie/doug.leith/apple_google.pdf

iOS is also much more hostile towards 3rd party apps than Android, greatly limiting what they can do. This makes moving to FOSS options harder.

Due to driver inconsistencies, updates breaking things (even the phone part), and the inability to use a lot of "normal" apps

Sounds like you haven't tried modern GrapheneOS with sandboxed Google Play Services. Neither of these are issues for me and I've been using it for years after switching from iOS.

The are a lot more people who want to degoogle vs. the people who understand how to do rom flashing

Flashing GrapheneOS takes like 2 seconds and requires nothing but a desktop/laptop and a browser. If you can read, you can install GrapheneOS with minimal effort.

  • Is it weird that I view a finite amount of content as a feature? It satisfies my desire to scroll while being a lot less addicting. Ofc if you have some niche interest you might be screwed. I never used reddit much in the first place and never made an account over there so I might be an outlier.

  • To me, the point is less about him being MAGA and more about him alienating a massive portion of his userbase and then completely botching the PR response by doubling down and failing to apologize or seemingly even understand why what he said matters to people.

Also his either inability to understand that Gail Slater sucks complete ass or his refusal to understand that fact. A leader in privacy should not be praising someone like her and celebrating the departure of Lina Khan. The discussion about whether it's incompetence or maliciousness is less important to me.

  • And to repeatedly fail to update their github with the latest source code for their mobile apps, and to not have their apps on f-droid, and to not support notifications of any kind on a degoogled android OS, and to not support monero payments, and to add a Zoom button to everyone's calendar by default with no disclaimer about using Zoom, and to limit custom domain aliases.

VMFXX Safety in the Trump/Musk era?

I'm young and a student and I have most of my savings in a VMFXX money market account which I basically use as a low risk place to set and forget my money. Most of this fund is federal cash and securities. I like that it is there when I need it and that it makes more interest than a savings account.

I've been hearing vague things about Elon Musk messing with the treasury since Trump got elected and there is just seems to be a lot more uncertainty in the federal government overall.

The value of the money in this money market account has never dropped before, but is there any risk that the current administration could mess things up enough that my savings could be at risk? If so, is there anywhere else I could leave my money that would be similarly low risk but earn more interest than a savings account with my credit union?

Tools for collecting traffic data on my street?

I'm working with my neighbors to petition the city to add traffic calming measures (e.g. speed bumps, one way roads) to my street. I'm also hoping to turn it into a bit of a research project. Does anyone know of any tools to monitor or even automate data collection of the speeds of cars, number of cars going by, how many actually stop at intersections/stop signs, etc? If we're successful with the petition, I think it would be nice to be able to present some data from before and after the traffic calming measures are put in place. Thank you in advance!

    Issues federating with lemmy.world?

If you go to c/[email protected] through midwest.social, it shows fewer subscribers in the sidebar than if you go straight to lemmy.world (https://midwest.social/c/[email protected] vs https://lemmy.world/c/homeimprovement). Also, there are posts that only show up when you look at c/[email protected] through the midwest.social instance, and are missing from the lemmy.world instance.

For example, this post: https://midwest.social/post/4242666 is nonexistent if you look at the homepage on lemmy.world: https://lemmy.world/c/homeimprovement. However, you can see it from the homepage on midwest.social: https://midwest.social/c/[email protected].

    Whole Home Surge Protection?

Is whole-home surge protection a good idea to protect large appliances, a plug in hybrid car, etc from voltage spikes?

I'm also a little lost in terms of what I should be looking for in a whole home surge protector. Are they all just MOVs, and if so, doesn't that mean they'll wear out and need to be replaced overtime?

Looking for Someone Skilled in Fabrication

A component in my 30 year old Gaggenau oven died and they discontinued the part. Does anyone know of someone in the area who is skilled enough and willing to fabricate the part?

Unable to find 30 year old Gaggenau Oven EB 378 610 part

    cross-posted from: https://midwest.social/post/4040473

Every once in a while, the heating element seems to break on my Gaggenau EB 378 610 oven. Other than that, it works fine.

This time though, I am unable to find a replacement part since the manufacturer discontinued it. I searched everywhere online and on eBay, but was still unable to find it.

I would rather not buy a new oven since that would be very expensive and I like this one. Does anyone have any ideas about where I can find a replacement heating element? Or am I out of luck?

    It's a convection element, part #00098494, 100L
