What's your favourite type of gum?

Would love to hear some recommendations especially if they are available in Canada. I've been chewing a lot of whatever the green and blue version of 5 gum is lately. 5 released a caffeinated version of their gum called respawn but I don't think it was ever sold in Canada.

  • Under previous guidance, the CCSA recommended a maximum of 10 standard alcoholic drinks per week for women and 15 for men. Now, it says no amount of alcohol is completely safe, and recommends a maximum of two drinks a week to stay within the lowest risk threshold.

    I'm surprised it's that high.

I think it makes sense to put labels on alcohol though considering weed and cigarettes already have massive warning labels. Seems like legacy or grandfathered in policy that we don't already.

Are there any devices for telling what HDMI or copper cables go together when running them through a wall?

I know I can use an HDMI source like a Raspberry Pi and a small screen for HDMI and could twist copper cable together and measure continuity through them to narrow down which is which but I'm wondering if there is an easier way. Maybe something I connect to either end?

  • Thanks. I am still not sure if that would rule out the second knife considering that knob might be considered an "other device" thing. I know there was a big push not too long ago with border security confiscating flipper knives

What kind of utility knives are illegal in Canada?

The laws regarding knives here can be a bit vague at times and I'm wondering if knives like this

    Or this

Would be considered illegal? The top one is assisted and deploys in a way that seems like a switchblade and the bottom one can be opened with one hand thanks to the knob. I am not sure if they would be viewed any differently than a pocket knife because they use utility blades making it a bit more obvious that they are a tool.

  • My cat gets around this by sleeping on my neck

  • Tamago

  • He looks so happy and relaxed. Very cute

  • I am looking for the latter. It seems to be a common question but I can't really seem to find a one stop answer.

I feel like it will be a bit of a challenge to arrange around 100 pages to work with this

  • That's the issue I'm running into. Once you select 4 pages per sheet it seems to override the booklet mode.

Adobe seems to try to print

    1 2

    3 4

for example. The only option I can think of is to arrange the pages to work with this but it gets a bit difficult with nearly 100 pages.

Can someone recommend an easy way to convert a PDF file into a quarter page booklet?

I'd like to have each page a 1/4 the size of a regular piece of paper, in a booklet style, printing on the front and back, and have 4 pages per page one side of piece of paper.

That way I can cut the page in half and minimize the amount of paper I use while making a quarter page size booklet I can keep in my pocket.

  • It is in a living room but I might be able to get some storage units to put things underneath the desk. I feel like having the upper area clear would definitely help.

  • That would be a challenge with the space that I am working with. I could go vertical but this desk is already rather high

  • All good. I appreciate the feedback. It's a lot of legacy stuff I've had across several years combined together and I've tried my best to make it fit within the desk. You can see in the photo I had to use a Simpsons comic book so that my monitor fit over my original Xbox for example.

Does anything specific standout or any recommendations?

  • Nah I think it's cosy I'm more wondering what people think of the general Aesthetics

My modded console and PC setup with everything interconnected. Too much clutter?

It has two screens with and I can toggle between the inputs of my modded consoles (PS2, PS3, PS4, original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii), my ThinkPad, and my desktop computer below my desk. When something is being displayed on my smaller screen it's passed through my PSVR processing unit so I can view whatever the output is in VR.

Everything is connected to a passive audio mixer.

My two computers are connected to a USB switch so that I can swap between the keyboard and mouse back and forth without relying on software.

I feel like it's pretty functional but I am wondering if it's a bit too cluttered.

Edit: The Xbox 360 Kinect can be used for its intended purpose but I can also plug it into my PC and use gestures for mouse movement.

How many of you EDC some form of digital storage? If so, what's on it?

I feel like it's not something you see very often here compared to other items like knives and fidget items.

I have a JEYI 2230 NVMe case with a 1TB drive I keep on my keychain for backups of things that would be annoying to lose like my AntennaPod stats

  • The additional monitor is a game changer. I feel like I don't take it for granted because of how often I see single monitor setups in the wild

What are something you immediately took for granted and were surprised about?

I had a hell of a time trying to figure out how to word the title. What I mean is something that changed in your life for the better and you immediately started underappreciating it.

I got laser eye surgery a couple years ago and immediately got used to it and didn't think about all the minor inconveniences that came with having glasses.

Similarly I bought a curved computer monitor because it seemed neat and after a couple hours it feels so insignificant I stopped really "feeling" anything.

Trying to think of a PC game from ~2006 that was similar to Settlers 4 and had a cheat code to reveal the map

I've been trying to recall a game I played briefly as a kid at a friends house.

I feel like it was similar in style to Settlers 4 with an isometric view, typical click and drag a square around who you want to control, and a focus on building and combat. What makes me think it wasn't Settlers 4 is I don't recall it having that kind of cartoon style and I vividly remember there being some kind of cheat code that would reveal the map.

The reason I say it's around 2006 was because I originally went to buy it in a Future Shop (a Canadian store that was bought by Best Buy) but my mom said I should get Civilizations 4 instead because she recalled my uncle talking about it.

  • Maybe. I am posting this from Canada.

Do people at Lush get to make their own little avatars for the products they make?

For context there are stickers on Lush product containers that have a cartoon photo of the people who made it. I'm wondering is there one person who just makes them? Are they made using preselected features? Do employees get to design them?

    No clue but I'm curious.

What show comes to mind when you think of Canadian TV?

For me it's Corner Gas. I still think it's pretty funny and there's a decent amount of references to Canadian stuff but not enough to be off-putting. I feel like an American wouldn't be confused watching it even if some of the references get a bit dated overtime.

I have only seen a bit of the animated version in waiting rooms.

What are the rules regarding flying with electronics and power banks within Canada?

From my understanding it varies from airline to airline.

I'm looking at the Air Canada page that has details for example which can be found here.

But I'm not sure certain what it means.

Can I have a portable power bank that's 160W? If I bring that could I also bring on a laptop and a Steam Deck?

It seems like you can bring 15 devices theoretically.

  • It depends where you are ordering from but a lot of craft breweries commonly have beers above 10%

  • I was talking relatively to the US. Even then it's about on par with the rest of the world. It's not substantially weaker like the other comment was implying

These wine crystals in my Red Piquette made me panic for a moment

    Edit:

The original title of my post was

"Anyone know what these little shards would be I found in my can I got from 2 Crows Brewery?"

    and the text below said

"I'm not sure if it's glass or some kind of settlement that accumulated at the bottom.

It is rather hard. I can't crush it easily with my fingers and it doesn't feel sharp enough to cut me. It has a pink colour to it."

but I contacted 2 Crows and they got back to me really quick.

    They are wine crystals!

I had never heard of them before.

I edited the title because I don't want people to be concerned. I love 2 Crows.

Does anyone know where in Halifax I can order weird canned food?

I know you can get canned escargot at Sobeys but I am talking about the real weird stuff. Canned cheeseburgers, full chickens, and bread.

I'd be fine ordering it online as well as long as I am not paying absurd amounts for shipping.

How often do you change your mobile phone plan?

I feel like every two years I need to call my carrier and complain if I want a decent deal. They will do things like upgrade my plan on their website to have 10 extra gigabytes of data but won't upgrade me to it until I contact them. There's also all the new member exclusive deals that I feel make it impractical to just sit on one plan for an extended period of time.

Why is mobile data in Canada so expensive?

I read once that we pay the highest rates for mobile data (or at least I think I did) in the world but I don't recall reading why. Maybe it had something to do with near-monopolies or infrastructure?

Are there any changes coming that may change this?
