  • How would EU detect that US companies hand over information to American law enforcement contrary to the agreement?
The problem is that because of the agreement EU countries could pretend like it isn't a real problem, despite by American law it obviously is. Now EU is waking up to reality, but we still can't prove it's happening.

  • Problems absolutely started already with George Bush, who said: "If you aren't with us, you are against us." While at the same time he fed us false information about weapons of mass destruction, that made many countries join USA against Iraq.

The fact that that idiot was elected twice was not good, the fact that Trump got elected was not good.
The fact that Trump got elected again, when it is evident he wants to dismantle Democracy in USA and dismantle NATO is insane!!!
That he now threaten Canada, Panama and Denmark militarily. While obstructing Ukraine and helping Russia, makes it insane he is allowed to continue.
Canada is probably the biggest traditional USA ally of all. And Denmark has been an extremely reliable ally that also participated (helped USA) in Iraq.

Obama was very well liked, and things almost got back to normal because of him, but even with Obama there were problems. Like non Americans apparently had no rights regarding surveillance. And also there were numerous grave incidents of illegal surveillance of European politicians and EU parliamentarians.

Like the saying goes, with friends like that, who needs enemies?

PS: I am not an anti American by habit, this is a new thing for me, in my childhood I admired USA. But I've really come to despise many aspects of American politics, and the flawed democracy. And it's sickening to hear them call America land of the free, when they don't even have basic civil rights that are universal throughout EU.

  • That's been the case for a long time, all you have to do is claim national security, and things can be handled under anti terror laws, where everybody is treated with the rights of a terrorist, meaning they basically don't have any rights. And can be held, prosecuted and judged in secret, without normal rights to outside legal counsel!!

This has been the case since George Bush! Pushed through with the help of the 9/11 terror attack, and is what Obama called a "good balance"!
My bet is that it's even worse now under Trump.

  • vowing to fight the US government in court to protect Euro customers’ data if needed.

Problem is they simply can't do that, the anti terror laws are enforced in secret, supported by secret laws and processed in secret courts. If you work against them in any way, you can be treated as a terrorist just for that.

The agreement between USA and EU for USA to respect EU law was never worth the paper it's written on. Because US law simply doesn't agree, and is designed to trump the agreement.
If you reveal anything from above secret law enforcement, you are yourself guilty of acts against the safety of United states. And if you in any way obstruct it, you can be held, prosecuted and judged as a terrorist with basically no civil rights.

It's insane that EU fell for it, and played along in the American circus to dismantle human rights and democracy.
If EU finally wakes up about such issues, I might actually celebrate the Trump presidency!!

USA has decided to burn civil rights and human rights, and undermine democracy both globally and at home, let's make sure that shit doesn't spread to EU!!!

  • This story reeks of AI, or at the very least to be made up, and it's from 2018, 7 years old.
In civilized countries it's illegal to fire people in that way.
And very conveniently there is no mention of either company or country.
    Why is this upvoted?

  • Yes, but that goes only for infant animals, infant animals generally look cute to most predators, to give them a chance to survive if they are detected by a predator.
But I think the question is meant to go further than that, because animals can become part of our group as adults too. And will help rescue and protect in a situation of disaster, and will also be rescued and protected. For those animals the love goes deeper than just looks.

  • It's probably mostly a side effect of our ability to feel love for each other.
As a group animal we have an instinct to protect each other that is born from love, that instinct help us survive as a group. The pet is included and can become part of the group maybe even family.
This trait has also helped us build relations with some animals that have historically been beneficial to our survival, like dogs horses and farm animals. For less immediately "useful" pets, the instinct is the same, and although it doesn't serve the same purpose, it may be helpful psychologically to overcome hardship, and maybe tie the group together more closely.

  • You know someone who is addicted to shrooms/LSD?

No, I know someone who knew this guy. Allegedly he became a total mess in no time. They were a group who took it under guidance, and this one fellow became hooked trying it once.

  • Yes I agree, you can get drunk some times without being an alcoholic, but if you get hammered drunk so you don't know what you're doing, then you obviously have a problem.
I never understood why some people find it funny, when they get so drunk they can't remember anything the day after???

    Regarding people questioning durability:

    https://thetechylife.com/how-long-do-byd-batteries-last/

BYD batteries are designed to last for 3000 to 5000 charge cycles

If a car has 400 km range on a charge and can handle 3000 cycles, that's 1.2 million kilometers.
While we don't know for sure, there has been nothing to indicate BYD should have compromised on that.

Popular Tesla model had 'raging high dump percentage' for mandatory safety checks in 2024

In Denmark when a car reaches 6 years, it needs to be safety checked to be used on the roads. After that it's every 2nd years.

Tesla model 3 managed these safety checks extremely poorly, with 3 times the average failure rate.

In total, 1,392 errors were found on the Tesla model, which is three times as many compared to the other electric cars.

Russia's Kharkiv offensive – what is the plan?

Russia has launched an offensive into the Kharkiv region, and it has created a lot of alarmist news reports. In reality it is difficult to see what Russia's plan is, and it is not self-evident that it is a smart use of resources. In this video I discuss whether we might be seeing a return to the fragmented command structures that Russia had in the beginning of the war.

4 months durability for an $800 phone!

My old $200 Motorola G9 Power phone lasted almost 4 years with only very minor scratches. Obviously in that period I have dropped it a few times getting out of the car, where the phone sometimes work itself out of my pant pocket while I drive, and then it slips out when I get out of the car. But no problem on my previous phones, despite the Moto had cheap Panda glass front.

Then I bought my $800 glass back Xiaomi 13T Pro in January, and I loved the phone for the camera and good specs. But alas after only 4 months, and single drop of just 30 cm while sitting on the porch, the glass back immediately cracked! The back now looks like an ugly mess, and the high water resistance is very likely gone too.

For sure the last time I buy a phone with a glass back!!!

I wonder why glass back is so popular, and I curse the media for reviewing the Samsung Galaxy S2 as "feeling a bit cheap", because the back was synthetic, and drop tests showed it was 10 times as durable as the iPhone with its g

Why do Google searches not give maps links anymore?

It used to be very convenient that when searching for something that had a geographic location, Google searches used to show a small map which linked to Google maps when pressed.
Now all I get i a tiny useless map, that doesn't have any of the feature of Google maps, and often I don't even get that.
Anyone know why that is? And if there is a fix?
I use Firefox, but I'm guessing it's independent of browser, unless Google is up to their shenanigans again.
I've added Google maps as search option, which luckily is dead easy in Firefox to do. At the same time I added Open Street Map, to minimize Google map use to maybe show them they are losing traffic.

    EDIT:

I think this is the reason as u/garrett@lemm.ee writes:
