  • For a showroom vehicle where you want everything on the vehicle to be as spotless and unblemished as possible, yeah, I would imagine some places would.

Sure, not everywhere is gonna do it, but I would guess that they had a time or two where a car slipped on the curb and scuffed up the tire. It's one more thing to potentially turn off a customer. Plus, they maybe can't sell the car until they replace the damaged tires (just my guess).

  • Wouldn't that be the same for any show car? Like, you don't want to scuff up the new tires by unnecessarily taking the car over a curb.

Granted, they should have put them away for the show, but they clearly don't have much brain power to show.

  • What's your thoughts on the provided OpenWRT vs vanilla?

  • I'm glad to hear that. The Flint series isn't the most popular out there, but most everyone has good things to say about them.

  • The missing video and screen sharing are probably the biggest things that would keep me in my group for moving over. The project looks promising though, and I'll definitely be watching it closely. Especially since discord is quickly going downhill.

  • I ordered the Flint 2 a few days ago. I can report back how it is once it arrives. Sucks that I have to buy a second router, but the Asus one I originally got has been a real pain.

Smother Them With Love and Validation

  • I took a look at Spacebar and it is quite interesting. It seems promising, but looks to be quite a ways away from replacing discord. The lack of an app yet sucks too.

I'll keep it on my radar.

Current state of Revolt, April 2025 (edit April 26)

These will be a series of informal (for now) posts about the current state of Revolt as compared to Discord. As things stand, Revolt is probably the best replacement for Discord, however, a number of features have not yet been implemented.

This lack of particular features may prevent certain users and groups (myself included) from fully transitioning over to Revolt. The hope is that some day soon Revolt has enough feature parity to make the switch from Discord and easy choice.

    Missing Features

List is incomplete because I have only just started using Revolt myself.

    • Video chat
    • Voice chat on Android (iOS works I believe)
    • Screen sharing
    • Category and synced permissions
    • Mic noise suppression
    • Safety settings (who can message and friend you)
    • Server verification levels (email or phone verification)

Minor features (need to confirm some)

    • Server folders
    • Ephemeral (private responses to commands)
    • Embedded polls
    • A few formatting methods
    • Stickers
    • /Commands
    • Soun

    Getting started with Revolt

    Quick Links

    For Users

Revolt is an open source chat website/program/app. While the project doesn't say it out loud, Revolt is designed as a replacement for Discord. It has many (but not yet all) of the features present in Discord.

Revolt has a web app, desktop programs, as well as mobile apps.

    Quick Start Gide

Feel free to copy paste this section to share with others:

    1. Download the revolt app:
    1. Create an account in the app missing your email (no verification required)
    2. Select a username (uses a number tag system like username#1234)

    OR

    1. Sign up on the website: https://app.revolt.chat/login/create
    2. Use the web app to access Revolt: http
  • Except they are missing voice calls on Android, and don't (as far as I have seen) have video or screen sharing yet.

Those two alone make it a poor replacement at the moment for my friend group. I appreciate the simple setup and all the 1:1 features they have so far, but video and voice are the main things we use discord for.

I have it set up and will try to get some techy friends on board to play with it, but it's not really there yet to move everybody over. Hopefully the eventually self destruction of Discord will give Revolt the push it needs to finally be a suitable replacement.

  • Skype is dead, sites like ooVoo are long gone, TeamSpeak seems to be held up in part by game clans.

While I can't say they actively killed the competition, they certainly gave plenty of services little reason to exist. Discord created such a good and new service, that there wasn't any reason to leave it for a different service.

  • Seems to be Dwarf Fortress inspired:

    • Start with 7 dwarves but you can build and support a population of hundreds.
    • A simulated world with changing weather and seasons that have a big impact on gameplay.
    • Every one of your settlers has their own needs and desires to fulfil as they work together for the common good.
    • A deep crafting tree that leaves no natural resource unused, tied together into satisfying production chains.
    • Progress through skill tiers to craft better tools and weapons.
    • Trade with merchants to increase your wealth even further.
    • Form up and train your military to battle monsters and invaders...
    • ...or play in Peaceful Mode to chill out with a relaxing city-builder experience.
    • Twitch integration (using viewer names for settlers) to encourage stream audience interaction.
    • Built "Mod-first" so that everything is moddable.
  • Hahaha!

It's perfect! These people get what they deserve :)

  • Don't like it either. The way I browse, I often click on images directly which doesn't show the title text.

I see Farside comics and I expect to either see the caption under the drawing, or see the lack of a caption and know the joke is in the image. I thought this one didn't have a caption, and was frankly confused a little.

  • I'll give it a look. I'm still in the early stages of the project, so it'll be a bit before I get to the point where I work on the database side of things.

    Oh no... Anyways...

  • Your order is correct!

With the help of the other comment suggesting to measure the voltage of VCC, I was able to verify all the pins were working.

  • I have the pin order now!

I (very carefully) tested the pins for a brief moment to verify it all was working.

First I verified the voltage of vcc as 3.5v. Red to that and black to ground worked with no problems.

I figured the blue was probably in it's correct place so I tried it and got video.

Quick test with green have me LED power.

The male part of the plug is borked, so I'll just solder the wires on. Might even fashion up my own plug if I'm feeling fancy. I'm sure I got some spare connectors lying around somewhere.

  • Sadly didn't find any. Even looked at other camera scores in the similar budget range with the hopes that the camera part is reused on other devices. No luck. Not many teardowns of scope cameras.

  • It's a bit old and on the budget side. I'll keep that in mind as a last resort.

  • The label is for the through holes, but I did confirm the corresponding pins for the plug with my multimeter.

  • I don't believe the pins in the cable are in the right places. I guess they were reinserted wrong when it was first opened up. Pin 2 is definitely a dead pin. I confirmed the ground pin to the battery connection.

Looking for assistance figuring out how to fix this connector.

I have an inspection scope camera that I'm attempting to repair. It's one with a camera on the end of a flexible rod to see into tight spaces. The pins that lead to the camera came out of the connector. I tried looking for teardowns or even replacement parts, but found nothing.

Two pins are still inserted, but I'm not confident they are in the right places. I want to get it working without the risk of frying everything. I've done my best to find where each pin goes, but there's not enough info for me figure it out on my own. The camera rod also includes an LED for light.

Here's a photo of the connector as it is:

And here is the socket with it's pins labeled (the labels correspond to the testing pads and not to the socket pins):

Here's a zoomed out pic if it's of any use:

YAML, SQL, or something else? Looking for recommendations for making a database of stories.

Short version of the situation is that I have an old site I frequent for user written stories. The site is ancient (think early 2000's), and has terrible tools for sorting and searching the stories. Half of the time, stories disappear from author profiles. Thousands of stories and you can only sort by top, new, and 30-day top.

I'm in the process of programming a scraper tool so I can archive the stories and give myself a library to better find forgotten stories on the site. I'll be storing tags, dates, authors, etc, as well as the full body of the text.

Concerning the data, there are a few thousand stories- ascii only, and various data points for each story with the body of many stores reaching several pages long.

Currently, I'm using Python to compile the data and would like to know what storage solution is ideal for my situation. I have a little familiarity with SQL, json, and yaml, but not enough to know what might be best. I am also open to any other solutions that work well wi
