Lemmy.ca's Main Community @lemmy.ca
Delvin4519 @lemmy.world

In the past few weeks the [email protected] community has grown quite a bit. The growth has mostly consisted of news and (geo)political posts, which is understandable.

However, this makes it hard to follow any text threads like these or non-news/political posts. This leaves the only option of either blocking the [email protected] community completely, or having to use a mobile app with keyword filtering (I'm not aware of any on desktop, and keyword filters do not sync between devices yet).

I'd suggest changing/updating the rules of [email protected] to note to users to post their political (and geopolitical?) news threads in [email protected] instead. Alternatively, split geopolitical with (world) news into a separate lemmy.ca (world)news community like with [email protected]? This split community would have a rule that all posts would need to link to a news site or equivalent. Text & image posts would remain at !canada@lemm

Group Directory (and a couple of questions)

Been looking around this place properly today. And it's honestly looking pretty good right now with some nice theming options too. And considering that I've also been giving Bluesky a go, it's pretty cool that you can even link that account.

Just one though. Unless I'm dumb and I'm missing something, browsing groups doesn't seem that great at all. Like, unless you know specifically what you want to search for, it looks like your only option is to scroll through posts from groups until you find something that interests or is relevant to you.

I noticed that there's a directory for users, why not one for groups? Is something like this in the pipeline? I appreciate that a platform like this is a lot more feature heavy and complicated than something like Bluesky or even Lemmy. So I'm not making demands or anything. Just an idea that I think would make it Friendica an even more complete replacement for Facebook.

Personally what I'm looking for out of this is a space where I can crap out m

Would you welcome an option to reattain achievements on games you've already 100%ed?

It's kinda sad that a game you love can only be 100%ed once, forever. I propose an option (and it should really be optional) to reattain the cheevos for a game you've already maxed. The original achievement unlock info should remain, but if the in-game pop-ups could be set to begin again, and for the next unlocked cheevo to add a little star or a +1 to your cheevo icon or something (even if it's only visible to yourself), that would be awesome.

Anyone else wish they could 100% a game multiple times or am I just too autistic for my own good? 👀

Auto-federate communities from other instances with Lemmy Federate

As communities are only federated with this instance when at least one of its users subscribes, new and small communities are at an inherent disadvantage in terms of discoverability. While not a problem unique to this instance, Lemmy Federate is used by several other instances to have a bot temporarily subscribe to communities from federated instances until at least one actual user from the instance subscribes.

Although the federation of additional communities means that users who curate their All feed via extensive community filter lists will have to filter more communities, I think the benefits to the discoverability of communities across Lemmy, promoting their growth in the process, would make it worthwhile.

Could we add redirects for Reddit convention links? i.e. lemmy.ca/r/xyz > lemmy.ca/c/xyz

I can't be the only reddit migrant who often instinctually goes to a given community by typing /r/community, only to be 404d. If the /r/ path isn't being used for anything else, is it possible to have it dynamically redirect to /c/ instead?

AskBlåhaj

It was suggested that I post this idea to the community proper. So I'm just copying and pasting the comment that I made, edited to make it clear which post I'm referencing (which is the next most recent post here anyway). I hope I got the link right in order to work with all of this federation mumbo jumbo.

I’m too new to be making these kinds of suggestions and I’m far from the moderator type myself but multiple times throughout this week, I’ve been thinking that it would be pretty cool if there was an AskBlåhaj. Or even just general Ask Lemmy based here, that could be asking for unwanted attention from shitty people on other instances though.

Not even 24 hours after seeing this post, I’ve seen someone else getting the snark and a non answer for a simple question. And also a Blåhaj user.

As much of a public bathroom as it could be, AskReddit was pretty fun for ‘silly’ questions and general chatting. And a nice place for new users to hang

Light/dark mode switch accessible when signed out & viewing other instances

When viewing different instances, whether to copy a community link to make another instance aware of it & subscribe to it or otherwise, it would be nice to have a switch along the top bar to switch between admin-set light/dark mode themes.

That way you aren't either forced into being blinded by light mode or having to let your eyes adjust to dark mode. Admins could choose the variant of light or dark theme to have the switch toggle between, so in the case of more customized instances they could retain their distinct style.

For reference, see almost any site with a light/dark toggle, but for a closer example, see Piefed's approach.

block new accounts from posting

More and more new accounts are posting spam and ads to communities (eg [email protected]), would it be an idea to block new accounts from posting to any p.d community?

Add flag of Palestine as a banner to Lemmygrad's interface

I chanced upon another piece of software that includes support for Ukraine on their homepage: pandoc.org, previously saw it on www.vim.org. There are apparently lots of projects on GitHub that do this too: StandWithUkraine. The same cannot be said for Palestine.

So people of Lemmygrad, should we include the flag of Palestine as a banner? Support could also shown in other forms, as long as it's immediately obvious that it's for Palestine.

Make back arrow exit embedded browser

Today I've visited TechCrunch from a posted link

https://techcrunch.com/2024/07/24/crowdstrike-offers-a-10-apology-gift-card-to-say-sorry-for-outage/

and after some reading couldn't exit it at all tapping both my back key and the back arrow on the top.

Due to how inconvenient the arrow on top is, I suggest to make it the exit button that closes the browser and returns user to Lemmy at once, while usual back buttons keep acting like they are now.

Disallow the use of sources deprecated by the Wikipedia editing community for unreliability

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/23066599

Since 2017, Wikipedia editors have compiled a list of news sources from which articles are highly likely to employ systematic bias, lack professional editing and/or journalistic standards, regularly misrepresent sources, and/or fabricate information.

While its list is by no means a complete list of publications with the aforementioned problems, it has helped make Wikipedia articles more reliable by basing them off of sources covering the same events and information from a less biased point of view.

To make Lemmy news communities better than their Reddit counterparts, I think avoiding links to those sources in favor of more reliable alternatives would be worthwhile.

Language selection

Hello,

I think it would be possible to improve the user experience of the language selection box.

Now:

Suggestion:

Meta @jlai.lu
AMAKI @jlai.lu

Add a "Jump to Comments" Button

If it's at all possible. I just find it kind of annoying to have to scroll through super long posts just to get to the comments. Review threads for newly released games in some of the gaming communities are what prompted this idea lol.

Edit: what the hell is going on with that account that keeps spamming nonsense?

Default sort for comments

I am no programmer and am not sure if I am allowed to post this here, so delete if you want.

My suggestion: Like the default sort for posts we need a default sort for comments. There should be a dropdown menu like there already is for default sort posts.

Wondering what to watch during the break? Watch Michael Fassbender: Road to Le Mans on youtube.

It's a docu-series by Porsche about the actor Michael Fassbender's journey from novice racer to Le Mans competitor. It's available for free on Youtube. It's so much better than DTS. Here are the playlist URLs.
